Joe Hart 'very grateful' for West Ham supporters' hat help

Joe Hart thanked West Ham fans for using their heads after he borrowed a hat to help keep the Hammers in the FA Cup.

The goalkeeper had to take a cap from the travelling supporters in the first half of Sunday's 0-0 FA Cup draw at old club Shrewsbury as he struggled with the low sun.

His stops from Mat Sadler and Shaun Whalley saved West Ham from an upset after they were outplayed by their Sky Bet League One hosts.

And Shrewsbury-born Hart admitted he needed help in the first half.

"I am very grateful, we have one in the kit van but Aaron Cresswell's hair is that bad that apparently at the last game he took it and he's rocking the Umbro cap," he smiled.

"I didn't have one available so someone in the West Ham end very kindly lent me one. I would have took a hat, sunglasses all sorts, I couldn't see a thing.

"I think the fans could see I was impeded and saw people trying to get my attention. I had to watch the game but someone threw one on and I was grateful for that.

"The saves were alright because it was coming in at an angle but one guy had a volley from the edge of the box and I just threw my arms around because I couldn't see it. Luckily it went over."

Hart earned praise from boss David Moyes after being recalled following four games on the bench, while the England international has not played in the Premier League since November.

The 30-year-old, who left Shrewsbury for Manchester City as a 19-year-old in 2006, conceded his former club had played better in the third-round tie.

He said: "It was a fun game and I think Shrewsbury were the better team. We weren't great and they played well. It is going to be a tough replay.

"I should be surprised but I wasn't. I felt they were on the front foot and we weren't.

"They looked stronger than us. Maybe a few of the boys were tired, we have had a lot of games recently."
