West Ham's Dimitri Payet defends rabona against Watford

West Ham midfielder Dimitri Payet says his rabona in the 4-2 loss to Watford "came instinctively" after being accused of being "disrespectful" by Troy Deeney.

Payet produced a stunning piece of skill to set up Michail Antonio as the Hammers raced into a 2-0 lead on Saturday, only for Watford to then score four goals to secure the victory.

Deeney said afterwards that the France international's rabona was "disrespectful" to his side and that West Ham "tried to mug us off," however, Payet says he was just doing what came naturally to him.

"It was something that came instinctively to me at that time in the game," Payet told West Ham's official website.

"I thought that it was the best thing to do at that moment and I did it and it worked. When it works, the skill becomes even more impressive.

"If it worked every time, then of course [I'd do it in the next game]. Unfortunately, it is not a piece of skill that you can use every time, so we will have to see."

While Payet was able to pull off the rabona on that occasion, it was ultimately a disappointing afternoon for West Ham, who now turn their attention to Saturday's game at West Bromwich Albion.

"We need points and so we need to get our heads down and work hard this week," Payet said. "We will go there with the right attitude to go and get the win.

"We know that every match in this league is difficult, especially away from home. The key is to work hard and to go there with confidence and do what we need to do on the day."
