Mark Noble: West Ham win in final Upton Park game 'written in the stars'

West Ham rallying from a goal down to beat Man United in the final game at the Boleyn Ground was "written in the stars," according to captain Mark Noble.

After 2,398 games, West Ham is leaving Upton Park for the Olympic Stadium next season but send the old ground off in the style with a 3-2 win.

"I think it was written in the stars to be honest," Noble told Sky Sports. "We scored three fantastic goals. We showed pure determination and a will not to lose."

Winston Reid headed in the final goal at the stadium to give West Ham the victory, and the New Zealand native praised the support of the fans.

"It was just meant to be tonight. It is brilliant for us," Reid said. "It was the best atmosphere we have played in. The fans have been with us through the good times and the bad times."

The final match before moving to the Olympic Stadium was followed by a closing ceremony that came at a reported cost of £250,000.

Pyrotechnics started a show that saw London cabs drive onto the pitch with Hammer of the Year winners from years gone by, with Sir Trevor Brooking, Martin Peters and Paolo Di Canio among those introduced on the pitch.

A montage of World Cup-winning captain Bobby Moore was beamed onto a screen in the middle of the pitch towards the end of a ceremony, which saw the Cockney Rejects' sing "I'm forever blowing bubbles."

The result boosts West Ham's hopes of a Europa League spot next year, while severely damaging Man United's dreams of a top-four finish.

The Hamers will need to win at Stoke on Sunday to stay in sixth place ahead of Southampton and Liverpool for certain.

"It was big pressure for us," manager Slaven Bilic said. "We have had a great season and I told the guys however it finished in the last few games it has been a great season for West Ham.

"We were under pressure still, we didn't want to lose our last game. We just wanted to win it and this was a win of character.

"We didn't stop believing. We knew they were highly motivated because they could have leapt above Manchester City. We totally deserved it.

"It was a great night, it is history, not just a game, it is against them, fighting for Europe, late night game. All the boxes you need for a special type of game was tonight."
