West Brom ask England under-21s to withdraw Saido Berahino, reports say

West Brom have requested to withdraw Saido Berahino from England's Under-21 squad, according to multiple reports.

The 21-year-old striker has been troubled by minor injuries in recent weeks and was substituted late in Saturday's 3-0 loss to Manchester City.

He had been named in Gareth Southgate's squad for games against the Czech Republic and Germany but his club hope to spare him the trip.

Berahino, like fellow Baggies frontman Brown Ideye, has been playing with the help of pain-killing injections in recent weeks.

In those circumstances, it is understandable if the club wish to limit his exertions -- particularly with Southgate's squad in friendly action as they prepare for this summer's European Championship.

But manager Tony Pulis spoke enthusiastically about the call-up on Friday and played down any disappointment over Berahino missing out on Roy Hodgson's senior England squad.

"I think if he gets selected for the Under-21s that's a big honour in itself," said Pulis. "The lad's been very good lately in his attitude and his approach to everything we have done has been excellent.

"He's not said anything to me about it. He has been carrying an injury for the past few weeks but has still shown great character."
