Darren Fletcher hopes to lead West Brom to safety

Darren Fletcher is ready for West Brom's survival fight and aims to use his title-winning experience to guide the Baggies to safety.

The midfielder is expected to make his debut in Sunday's Premier League game at Burnley after joining on a free transfer from Manchester United.

The 31-year won five league titles and the Champions League in 2008 with the Old Trafford club, but now faces a new challenge as Albion battle the drop.

They are just three points clear of the bottom three, ahead of Saturday's fixtures, and two points ahead of the Clarets.

Fletcher has never experienced a relegation fight, but believes he has the knowledge to aid the Baggies.

"When you win titles, you don't win it by playing fancy football all the time," he said. "There are times you have to dig deep to win football matches.

"I have been there before where I've had to dig deep for results -- I have done it with Scotland as well. There are many ways to win a football match and I am quite accustomed to doing that.

"You need a good dressing room and a good team spirit and they have got that; hopefully that can carry us through the rest of the season.

"The manager [Tony Pulis] leaves you under no illusions of what is expected of you on the pitch, how to be off the ball and what you're expected to do with it and we're working hard on that."

The Scotland international left Old Trafford after 340 appearances, but having started just five times this term.

A move to West Ham fell through and he joined Albion on deadline day on a two-and-a-half-year deal with a 12-month option.

Fletcher revealed on Friday he consulted former boss Sir Alex Ferguson before leaving United and insisted he was ready to go.

"I was prepared for it and I felt my time was up there, really," he said. "I felt I needed a new challenge and I wanted to play regular football and I hope I can do that.

"Obviously it is not taken for granted -- I have to show I can play and impress the manager. But I felt it was my time to go and look for something new and a new challenge."

Fletcher is primed for his Baggies bow with James Morrison struggling with a knee injury while Jonas Olsson has returned to training but is not yet match fit after an Achilles problem.

Fletcher was in the United side which drew 0-0 at Turf Moor in August and expects Sean Dyche's team to fight for their top-flight lives.

"It was tough afternoon," he said. "They have had fantastic season so far with the same squad that got them up. The manager has stuck with them and that team spirit and continuity has helped them. We are aware it will be difficult game -- it is massive game at this stage of the season."
