Watford hire Harry Kewell to coach club's under-21 squad

Former Leeds and Liverpool winger Harry Kewell has been appointed as Watford's new Under-21 coach.

The Australian international retired last year after a short spell with Melbourne Heart, now Melbourne City, and embarks on his first major coaching role with the newly promoted Hornets.

Sources had told ESPN FC that Watford first offered Kewell the job two weeks ago.

Kewell has established his own youth academy in Australia, where he also represented Melbourne Victory after leaving Europe following a stint with Galatasaray.

The 36-year-old will take care of Watford's under-21 side in the Under-21 Professional Development League Two South and the club's sporting director Luke Dowling is pleased to have the FA Cup and Champions League winner on board.

"We are delighted that Harry has agreed to join us as our new Under-21 coach," he said.

"Harry enjoyed an extremely successful career as a player, and he now has a proven track record when it comes to working with and nurturing gifted young footballers.

"His knowledge and experience will be of great benefit to the club's youth setup as a whole, and the talented players we have within our Under-21 group."

Watford have been busy in the transfer market since gaining promotion back to the Premier League, adding the likes of Sebastian Prodl, Matej Vydra, Etienne Capoue, Valon Behrami and Miguel Britos to their ranks.
