Wales would prefer Gareth Bale to Cristiano Ronaldo - James Chester

Wales defender James Chester is relishing the prospect of taking on Portugal in the Euro 2016 semifinals and says he would rather have Gareth Bale on his side than Cristiano Ronaldo.

Wales and Portugal meet in the last four of the European Championship next Wednesday after Chris Coleman's side stunned Belgium with a 3-1 quarterfinal victory on Friday.

West Bromwich Albion centre-back Chester, 27, will be charged with the task of helping to keep Ronaldo quiet in Lyon, though he feels the Portugal captain's Real Madrid teammate Bale will be the more dangerous player on the pitch.

"It's going to be a great battle between Cristiano and Gareth, I'm sure the media will hype it up," Chester told Sport360. "Gareth and Cristiano play together at Real Madrid but I'm glad that we've got Gareth on our side.

"He's the best individual in the tournament. If we defend and play like we have done, we'll give ourselves a great chance of beating Portugal."

Chester is a former teammate of Ronaldo's, having made his Manchester United debut during the forward's final season at Old Trafford.

"I was lucky enough to train with Cristiano a few times and it was evident then what a great player he was," he said. "Since he's gone to Real Madrid his game has changed and he's got even better -- he's turned into a goal machine. He's obviously one we'll have to watch.

"I was lucky as a young lad at United to see all those great players, including Ronaldo, at the top of their game. He was always very professional away from the pitch too, working in the gym and looking after himself.

"It was the players' extra work off the pitch that was one of the biggest things I took from my time at United."

Wales captain Ashley Williams, meanwhile, also said he would rather have Bale in his side than Ronaldo going into Wednesday's game.

"I wouldn't swap Gareth for anyone. He's unbelievable," Williams told Sport360. "What you see on the pitch is good enough but for me as captain, to have him in the group is a pleasure. The way he conducts himself around the camp and the way he helps everybody.

"He's a humble guy, he's down to earth and he gets on with it. He's one of the lads and I think he enjoys coming away with us. He's not this big star Gareth Bale, no one looks at him or treats him differently.

"The semifinal will be built up as Bale vs. Ronaldo but that's the beauty of football, that's for people to enjoy. The neutrals and the fans of those two players will enjoy it. You've got two of the best players in the world playing together on the same pitch in the semifinal of the Euros -- as it should be."

Williams added on Ronaldo: "I've never played against him before and he's obviously been one of the best for a number of years. I watched the game [against Poland] last night, he's an unbelievable player and he gets a lot of stick but everyone respects him and knows how good he is.

"It's another challenge for me, but it's not something I'll be nervous about. As a back three or as a team we will look to overcome that challenge. All the games you play in the Euros you've got to expect to play against top players."
