Liverpool favourites but we aren't inferior - Villarreal coach Marcelino

Villarreal coach Marcelino has said Liverpool are a "legendary team" and will be seen as favourites ahead of Thursday's Europa League semifinal first leg at El Madrigal.

Villarreal have never won a senior trophy, having only becoming a force domestically and in Europe over the last decade or so.

Meanwhile, Liverpool have won 18 English league titles and five European Cups, as well as lifting the UEFA Cup trophy in 1973, 1976 and 2001 and the Cup Winners' Cup in 1966.

Speaking at the pre-game press conference, Marcelino said that for many people Villarreal would be seen as outsiders, but they did not see themselves as in any way inferior.

"Maybe Liverpool are more the favourites," Marcelino said. "With their history, the size of the club, their potential and for having knocked out Dortmund [in thew quarterfinals], you could say that.

"But we do not consider ourselves inferior. We are going to put in everything to try and knock out a legendary team."

The coach said Anfield counterpart Jurgen Klopp's fast-paced, pressing style would present its own challenges.

"Liverpool are a very good team with extraordinary players who play in a very intense way," he said.

"They have a good counter-attack and press a lot, so they will not let us play. We need to look for solutions to get past that first line of pressure."

Villarreal could have key defenders Mateo Musacchio and Jaume Costa, who have both missed recent weeks through injury, back to face the Merseysiders.

"If they are on the list then they are ready to play, although it is true that they are coming from a period out," Marcelino said.

Yellow Submarine striker Roberto Soldado also spoke to reporters on Wednesday, hailing the excitement around the tie.

"For Villarreal to make a final would be a great prize," Soldado said. "It is the dream we all have. We believe in our chances, although we know it will be difficult.

"We do not feel under pressure -- it is an exciting game for the fans and the players.

"Liverpool are a physically powerful team, but we will have our chances to do them damage."
