Wolfsburg have appointed Valerien Ismael as their new head coach, with the 41-year-old signing a deal until 2018. Former Bayern Munich player Ismael had been promoted from the under-23 team following the dismissal of Dieter Hecking last month. At the weekend, the 2015 Bundesliga runners-up won only their second match of the season, 3-0 at Freiburg, to move out of the relegation zone. "Together we analysed the complete situation and came to the conclusion that Valerien Ismael is the right head coach for Wolfsburg," sporting executive Klaus Allofs told the club's official website. Wolfsburg had been linked with a number of other coaches including Hertha Berlin's Par Dardai, former Hamburg boss Bruno Labbadia and Andre Villas-Boas. "An extensive look at all the alternatives proved to us that this is the best solution," Allofs said. "This was a decision made with complete conviction." Ismael thanked the club for the "faith they have placed in my work," and added: "I firmly believe that we will be successful together." A defender during his playing days at Werder Bremen, Bayern and Hannover, he was sacked after only 13 matches of a spell in charge of second division side Nurnberg in 2014.
