Wolfsburg remember Junior Malanda after sealing Champions League spot

Wolfsburg have dedicated their direct qualification for the Champions League group stage to Junior Malanda, who died in a car crash in January.

Wolfsburg will play in the Champions League group stage for the second time in their history after Sunday's 3-1 victory at Paderborn ensured a top-three finish in the Bundesliga.

Speaking to reporters following the win, Wolfsburg sporting executive Klaus Allofs dedicated their achievement to Malanda, who died aged 19 in a road crash while on his way back to Wolfsburg from his Belgian home.

Reflecting on Malanda's death, Allofs said: "I believe that has been a development for us. The team has matured through it. We still wish we had him in our team. We know that he would have had great career, if everything had gone normal."

Malanda, who wore the No. 19 shirt, is remembered by Die Wolfe supporters in the 19th minute of all the club's games, while goalkeeper Diego Benaglio had dedicated the 4-1 victory over Bayern Munich on Jan. 30.

Meanwhile, Wolfsburg striker Bas Dost is hopeful he can end the season as the Bundesliga's top scorer after netting three times in his last two games.

Dost scored a remarkable 11 goals in six matches at the start of 2015 before enduring a five-game drought, but that ended with his effort in last weekend's 2-2 draw with Hannover, and he netted a brace in the win over Paderborn.

His season tally is now up to 16 -- three behind Eintracht Frankfurt's Alex Meier, and one behind Bayern Munich's Robert Lewandowski -- and he is hoping to make up the deficit in the final two games of the season.

"I think it's s--- that I went without a goal for so long," the 25-year-old said in quotes reported by kicker. "I'll try everything. It's possible to score three goals."

Coach Dieter Hecking, meanwhile, has guaranteed Dost a starting place for the remaining two fixtures, saying: "We will support him."

Allofs had said last week that Wolfsburg had no intention of selling Dost or Nicklas Bendtner, but there are fresh doubts over the latter's future.

The former Arsenal striker was not called up to the match day squad on Sunday, and used his Instagram account to post an image of himself holding his hand in front of his mouth alongside the word: "Speechless."
