Vancouver Whitecaps sign Tunisia international center-back Jasser Khemiri

The Vancouver Whitecaps added Tunisian center-back Jasser Khemiri, the team announced Friday.

Khemiri, 21, is the first player from Tunisia to be signed by an MLS club. He agreed to a three-year contract with a club option for 2022.

"Jasser is a player who caught our eye thanks to his strong performances with the Tunisian U21 national team," Whitecaps coach Marc Dos Santos said in a statement.

"He's 6-foot-4, he has very good speed, and he's comfortable with the ball, which are all qualities we are looking for in a center-back. At 21 years old, we believe Jasser has a tremendous upside and that he can become an important player for this club."

Khemiri, who hails from Tunis, Tunisia, made his professional debut in May 2016 at age 18 with Stade Tunisien. He played three seasons for the club, where he made 38 appearances and scored three goals.

He garnered attention at the youth level with the national team and was first called up to the senior team last January in preparation for the 2018 World Cup, then again in September of 2018.

Khemiri will occupy an international roster spot. He'll officially join the roster pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC), work permit, visa and medical examinations.
