Canada: Davies leads Vancouver past Montreal; Ottawa shocks Toronto FC

Alphonso Davies and Nicolas Mezquida celebrate after scoring a goal for Vancouver against Montreal.

The Vancouver Whitecaps have a slight upper hand over Montreal Impact following a 2-1 first-leg semifinal win at home in the Canadian Championship on Tuesday night.

Teenage sensation Alphonso Davies opened the scoring for the hosts in the 13th minute, and assisted on his team's second goal of the first half, setting up teammate Nicolas Mezquida, whose clinical finish sent the Caps to the dressing room with a 2-0 half-time lead.

But the Impact snuck in what could be a critical away goal on their West Coast rivals, as David Choiniere scored just past the hour mark to give Montreal hope in the second leg.

The teams will head back east to Montreal next Wednesday, with the Impact looking to overturn a first-leg deficit to make the final.

The Ottawa Fury pulled off a 2-1 first-leg upset of Toronto FC in the first semifinal of the evening.

Defending champions Toronto took a first-half lead when Benoit Cheyrou slotted home from a Jordan Hamilton assist for a 1-0 lead at the break.

But second-half goals by the hosts -- a Ryan Williams strike from the penalty spot and a 72nd-minute Sito Seoane goal -- gave the USL side an impressive 2-1 win against Major League Soccer's Eastern Conference leading Reds.

Ottawa will travel to BMO Field to face Toronto on May 31 for the decisive second leg.
