Valencia's Gary Neville has no intention of stepping down despite poor form

Gary Neville is determined to remain as Valencia coach despite his team's latest setback in suffering a 2-0 home defeat to Celta Vigo.

Sunday's loss at the Mestalla left Los Che in 14th place in La Liga and just six points clear of the relegation zone with eight games remaining.

Valencia fans booed the team after the full-time whistle and were heard chanting "Gary leave now" during the game.

When asked if he had considered stepping down, former Manchester United player Neville said after the game: "No. I believe we have to focus on the upcoming games. The situation is not good, the results have not been sufficiently good and we are all frustrated."

Neville, appointed head coach for the first time in his career on Dec. 2 following Nuno Espirito Santo's resignation, has had a nightmare spell in charge of Valencia.

Under Neville, the Spanish side have won just three of their 15 La Liga games to plummet in the standings.

"I was signed for five months and I accepted this enormous challenge," Neville said. "I understand that the results are far from what was expected. Now I have to focus on the work needed to be done in the next two months to save ourselves and at the end of the season, the club will evaluate the situation."

Valencia were knocked out of the Copa del Rey last month following an 8-1 aggregate defeat to Barcelona, while they were eliminated from the Europa League by Athletic Bilbao last week.

Neville's side have eight games left to climb up the La Liga standings, although they include meetings against four of the top six -- they face Barca and Real Madrid away, and Sevilla and Villarreal at home.

Neville, an assistant to England manager Roy Hodgson, insists he is fully committed to Valencia.

He will stay in Valencia to train his team until Thursday, changing his original plan which was to join the England team on Monday ahead of their upcoming friendlies.

"People in Valencia deserve my time," Neville said. "I'm going to stay here for three more days. The last thing I want is for people to think that I've never been committed because that is not the case. We have important games with England but here as well. I love this club, I love this city and I want to give everything."

Valencia travel to the Canary Islands to face Las Palmas after the international break, before next hosting Sevilla at the Mestalla.
