Gary Neville 'not closing door' on idea of extending his Valencia stay

Valencia coach Gary Neville has said he will not "close the door" on staying at the club next year.

Former Manchester United defender Neville, who has endured a tough start to life in Spain, is preparing his team to face Celta Vigo at the weekend with a seven-point cushion to the relegation zone.

He was appointed by Valencia owner Peter Lim on a short-term contract in December and told his news conference after Thursday's Europa League exit against Athletic Bilbao that he had grown to "love" the city and its club.

"I'm not closing the door for anything," Neville said. "All I'm saying is I know the contract I was given, you know the contract I was given.

"I will work as hard as I possibly can. I saw the fans tonight and see them around the city. They are proud people, they love this club. I will give everything to them and the players will too.

"I've come to love this city, and I love this club."

Valencia players and fans felt there was a handball in the build-up to the late Aritz Aduriz goal that knocked them out of the Europa League.

And Neville said he felt his side had not always got what they deserved from games, adding: "You do need a bit of luck.

"I can think of many matches we've played where, if we'd have taken the chances, we would have won.

"I'm quite reflective, I don't get too up and down. From my point of view I knew I was here for five months. Results are not what they should be for this club, and that's something I'm very aware of."

Neville criticised of his players' attitude after their recent derby defeat to Levante and apologised to fans, but said the effort against Athletic represented a big improvement.

"I've seen the best performance since I've been here tonight," he added.

"Players have taken it upon themselves to respond. We have to do the club and fans proud in the nine games left. We had words on Sunday, but there is a respect between us."
