Valencia discard bat logo after DC Comics claim 'Batman' link

VALENCIA, Spain -- Spanish football club Valencia said they will not use a new version of their bat logo that comic book maker DC Comics had opposed for being too similar to the Batman symbol.

Valencia said they had applied for a copyright for a new design of the bat that forms part of the club crest for a new clothing line, but they have since decided to discard it.

The club said in an official statement: "During the registration process, DC Comics filed an objection to our trademark registration. There is no lawsuit, nor any claim by DC Comics against VCF."

"For purposes of clarification, a bat has been incorporated into the club's official crest since 1922. The official crest and the bat have been trademark registered worldwide and their use has not been subject to any legal challenge."

The Batman comic first appeared in 1939, and has since spawned a television series and several, big-budget, high-grossing Hollywood movies.
