Retirement did not last long for former U.S. national team goalkeeper Tim Howard, who will play for the United Soccer League team that he co-owns.

The 40-year-old former Everton standout announced Wednesday that he will be on the field this season for Memphis 901 in the second-tier USL League Championship, pending league and U.S. Soccer Federation approval. Former United States international goalkeeper Tim Howard has been named sporting director at Memphis 901 FC, the USL club announced Wednesday.

The U.S. Soccer Federation announced a restructuring to the U.S. Open Cup, the organization's national championship that features professional and amateur teams squaring off against one another.

The changes were ratified by the U.S. Soccer Open Cup Committee last November, and is the first "major restructuring" of the competition since 2012, according to a release from U.S. Soccer.

Former United States international Landon Donovan has been named coach of United Soccer League side San Diego Loyal.

Former NYCFC striker David Villa is part of a group that has been granted a Queens-based USL franchise.

An investment group including Spain World Cup winner David Villa has been granted a USL franchise in New York City.

Queensboro FC will begin play in 2021 in the USL Championship, the second division of professional soccer in the United States. It will host its home matches in a new, modular stadium at York College in Queens that will have a capacity of around 7,500. The new team will also play select home matches at Citi Field, home of MLB's New York Mets.
