    Jeff Carlisle:

Perfect sentiments there John R. And with that, I'm signing off. Thanks for tuning in everyone. Until next time.

  •

    [Comment from John R]
As long as the league continues to show improvement that's all we should expect and ask for as MLS fans.

  •

    [Comment from Andrew]
Of course Beckerman and Luiz traded Jerseys. Funky hair buddies.

  •

    [Comment from Uncle Sam]
    post my comment!!!!!!

  •

    [Comment from Nate]
MLS has been much improved. Still alot of work to be done before we're recognized.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: De Rosario holds up the All-Star trophy. Not for the first time either against Chelsea. He did the same thing in 2006.

  •

    [Comment from Marty]
Ewww like Lalas used to have?!!

  •

Jeff Carlisle: No Max. Hence my reference to "home cooking."

  •

    [Comment from Max]
did everyone forget the ignored handball and ignored foul that set up the game winner?come on

  •

    Jeff Carlisle:

Skippy has one of those evil goatees.

  •

    [Comment from PeterG]
How can we know which one is evil? Does one of you have a moustache?

  •

    [Comment from Hal]
lol Chelsea fans want to sell Hazard already

  •

Jeff Carlisle: That's my evil twin Skippy.

  •

    [Comment from Jeff Carlisle]
I am really bad at my job.

  •

    [Comment from John R]
It was tough as a Chelsea fan and a fan of the MLS. But glad the "home" team got the victory.

  •

    [Comment from Brendan]
Big win for MLS All-Stars. I was rooting for them.

  •

    [Comment from Troy]
No way Seth. Man Utd had a harder lineup.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Not sure. I'll have to check with the higher ups.

  •

    [Comment from Pog]
What's the Olympic schedule for these chats?

  •

    Jeff Carlisle: Oh, do tell.

  •

    [Comment from Hal]
they aren't too happy on the Chelsea forums

  •

    [Comment from PeterG]
All three were set up by foreigners, though.

  •

    [Comment from Seth]
I feel that Chelsea started an even tougher lineup then Man Utd did the past two years. So no one can say they played their reserves although some were played they still played a majority of their best players. It was a good win for a team that barely practiced.

  •

    [Comment from matt]
let me just point this out, all goal scorers for the MLS tonight were American

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Looks like Pontius is getting the MVP award. Keep in mind, these things tend to be voted on with about 10-15 minutes to go.

  •

    [Comment from John R]
MLS has won more than half the time and I still think that only getting 48 hours to practice as a team should compensate for the arguement about the MLS All-stars being in mid-season fitness.

  •

    [Comment from Misty]
    DeMerit for MVP

  •

Jeff Carlisle: True Dave, but it's also a team that is thrown together. It makes for a nice scoreline, and MLS is getting better. Those of us that follow the league know this. Still a long way to go.

  •

    [Comment from Dave]
Not really that shocked by the MLS win. You have a league that puts their best players out in midseason form and they will at least win half of the time.

  •

    [Comment from John R]
Troy, why so much anger? There were plenty of starters for Chelsea or players that are expected to contribute this season in the lineup.

  •

  •

    [Comment from PeterG]
See you at the Olympic tourney, Carlisle!

  •

    [Comment from Abusoru]
MLS isn't elite, but they are getting a lot better.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: C'mon Troy. Everyone knows its an exhibition and proves nothing. It's a fun night for MLS, and little more. But let's face it. It was entertaining.

  •

    [Comment from Troy]
Congrats, you barely beat a reserve team.

  •

    [Comment from John R]
Great "Win" for the MLS All-Stars. If nothing, it proves that the talent level in the MLS isn't as bad as many want to believe. The league is getting there, but it takes time.

  •

    Jeff Carlisle:

Beita's arm looked to be extended, and I've certainly seen penalties given for less.

  •

    [Comment from John R]
Did the ball strike Beitashour's hand or did the hand strike the ball? It makes a difference.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Well, that was certainly unexpected. And yes, nothing like a little home cooking to give the All-Stars the victory.

  •

    [Comment from Pog]
FORD TRUCKS! APPLE PIE! BALD EAGLES!

  •

  •

    Jeff Carlisle: And that's it!

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Luis hits it straight into the wall.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: David Luiz will take it...

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Beckerman trips David Luis outside the box. It's about 27 yards out I think.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: About a minute to go I reckon after the goal.

  •

  •

    [Comment from Troy]
Such an undeserved victory. The referee totally screwed Chelsea. Hilario should retire.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Ball deflected off of David Luiz.

  •

    [Comment from Marty]
All Stars?!! Are you kidding me?!!

  •

    [Comment from Matt (NJ)]
MLS continues its dominance over West London.

  •

    [Comment from Abusoru]
Would you look at that? Not the prettiest goal, but an effective one.

  •

    [Comment from Marvin]
    So much for PKs

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Beckerman to Pontius back to Beckerman, who plays Johnson through, and his deflected effort sails over Turnbull! No talk of PKs now!

  •

    Jeff Carlisle: Eddie Johnson!

  •

    Jeff Carlisle: GOAL ALL-STARS!

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Because MLS wants to present a trophy. Like it matters.

  •

    [Comment from Marvin]
Why does this game end in PKs instead of just a draw?

  •

    [Comment from R. Abramovich]
How much did I pay for De Bruyne? What!?!?!? Have him killed.

  •

    Jeff Carlisle:

Kevin De Brunye has come on evidently and was at the point of a promising counter only for there to be few options and the chance went begging.

Meanwhile, Chelsea has a penalty appeal turned down even though it looked the ball hit Beitashour in the hand.

  •

    [Comment from PeterG]
John R, it's a bit like watching the US Men's Basketball during the Spain exhibition. Chelsea has looked weak at times, but in the transition game you can see their superior ability.

  •

  •

    [Comment from Pog]
One word if this goes to PKs: Panenka.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: John R, Chelsea has had most of the possession, thanks in part to greater numbers in midfield, but has generally found MLS tough to break down. In transition they've had more success.

MLS has played 4-4-2 mostly, and have looked good on the break as well.

  •

    Jeff Carlisle:

MLS counter almost comes off. Pontius plays De Rosario down the right wing who plays the ball back to Pontius, but his cross is too far ahead of Johnson.

  •

    [Comment from John R]
Formation would be good, but mostly flow.

  •

    Jeff Carlisle:

Chelsea counters through Hazard, but the attack peters out. MLS needs to be careful here as Chelsea are continuing to look dangerous in transition.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Valdes heads a cross straight up in the air, but Kennedy claims it.

  •

    Jeff Carlisle:

    Formation or flow?

  •

    [Comment from John R]
I can't get a feel for how the MLS All-Stars and Chelsea are actually looking on the field. Can one of you provide a general feel for how things look?

  •

    [Comment from Pog]
OMG it's tied. I'm eating dinner with extended family. Time to fake a nose bleed or something...

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Oooh! De Ro grazes the top of the net with his free kick.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Straight to pks I beleive.

  •

    [Comment from Ben]
If the game remains tied will there be extra time before the penalties or does it go striaght to pks?

  •

    Jeff Carlisle:

Ivanovic fouls De Ro just outside the box towards the left side.

  •

  •

    Jeff Carlisle:

If this goes to penalties, who do you guys like? It's not like Chelsea is any good at these things. ;)

  •

James Tyler: Cahill off, Chalobah on.

  •

James Tyler: Nope. No El Nino today.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Great ball from Beckham in the buildup to the All-Stars goal. Well done.

  •

    Jeff Carlisle: James?

  •

    [Comment from Ben]
Is Torres on the bench for Chelsea?

  •

James Tyler: Beckham off, Farfan on.

  •

James Tyler: Cahill a shambles on that. Guarding the edge of an empty six yard box, nowhere near Pontius when the ball came across.

  •

    [Comment from PeterG]
You were dominating names like blaszczykowski in the Euros but slipped on Meireles... someone's out of form.

  •

  •

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Beckham played De Rosario into space on the left wing, De Ro played the ball back and Pontius delivered a cool finish.

  •

    Jeff Carlisle: Chris Pontius!

  •

    Jeff Carlisle: GOAL ALL-STARS!

  •

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Decent ball over the top for Lukaku, but Kennedy comes out to claim.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Mierles takes ball to the end line, but his cross is cleared by Beitashour.

  •

    Jeff Carlisle:

Johnson is flagged for offside after seemingly being sprung on a clear breakaway.

  •

James Tyler: Game settling into a series of seemingly pre-planned passing exercises.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Hazard with a teasing cross that DeMerit does well to deflect.

  •

    [Comment from PeterG]
    Rafa Marquez?

  •

    Jeff Carlisle: David Beckham.

  •

    [Comment from jok]
who else thinks the mls is a joke

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Dero picks out Beitashour on the right wing, but low cross is easily cut out. Needed to be better there from Beita.

  •

    Jeff Carlisle:

Malouda picks Valdes' pocket, but Beitashour comes to the rescue and puts his low cross out for a corner.

  •

James Tyler: Intriguing to see Piazon used on the flank. Young, but can do it all. Has far more movement to offer than Lukaku.

  •

    [Comment from Tyler]
Hazard looks great in a chelsea kit

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Beckham takes it and it's caught by Turnbull.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Johnson wins a free kick on the left wing after a foul by Cahill.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: There we go James. Thanks.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Most unhappy man in MLS right now? Vancouver manager Martin Rennie. Can't be happy that DeMerit is still on the field.

  •

James Tyler: Piazon is on for Marin, I think.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Now I'm all messed up. Lukaku is still on apparently.

  •

James Tyler: Almost like an NBA line change there

  •

    Jeff Carlisle: Thanks guys.

  •

    [Comment from Karl]
    Pizon

  •

    Jeff Carlisle:

Off for Chelse: Lampard, Essien, Lukaku, Ramires
On for Chelse: Miereles, Mikel, Hazard, and ??

  •

James Tyler: Lampard having a wonderful night even before the goal. Very busy, very intelligent off the ball. Never a wasted move.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Eddie Johnson on for Wondo.

  •

    Jeff Carlisle:

Kennedy did not cover himself in glory on that play. A shame given his nice save earlier in the sequence.

  •

    [Comment from Karl]
    Frank, Frank, Frank.

  •

    [Comment from PeterG]
    Classic Super-Frank!

  •

    [Comment from Marty]
    I love Lampard!

  •

  •

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Ramires with the cross, Kennedy comes out and doesn't get there, and Lampard first-times it into an empty net.

  •

    Jeff Carlisle: LAMPARD!

  •

    Jeff Carlisle: GOAL CHELSEA!

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Lampard is played into the box by Ivanovic, hits a low shot and Kennedy with a very sharp save down low.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Ooooh. Chelsea go close!

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Lots of changes for MLS. Alonso, Morrow, Henry off. Beckerman, Corrales, and Zusi on.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Pontius gets a clean look at goal after getting a pass from Beckham, but he scuffs his shot wide.

  •

    Jeff Carlisle:

Yes Brian. It's an experiment to mark off where the wall should stand to prevent encroaching on free kicks. I like it. I've seen less encroachment by the wall in MLS games this year.

  •

    [Comment from Brian]
Pardon the ignorance from someone who watches more EPL than MLS, but what was with the spray can the ref used to mark 10 yards off? Is that standard MLS practice?

  •

    [Comment from Marty]
    Ha - didn't I say that JC - fitness

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Lampard plays the ball crossfield for Ivanovic, but his shot from distance is wide.

  •

    James Tyler: Terry's signing autographs.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Beckham takes the corner but puts it straight out into the side netting. And the crowd boos.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Beckham takes it...and it's deflected by the wall just over the bar.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Free kick for MLS. Henry stops Beckham from taking free kick quickly and they both crack up.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Nnice buildup ends with a shot from Pontius, but it's blocked.

  •

    [Comment from Marty]
    Beckham's prettier

  •

    [Comment from PeterG]
Boyd would've bicycled that Henry cross.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Kennedy caught in possesison by Malouda, but DeMerit and Morrow save the day. Sloppy from Kennedy there and a great recovery by DeMerit.

  •

    Jeff Carlisle:

Lukaku with a decent effort from distance. Flies just over.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Beckham is heading back to London for the Olympics and will miss some MLS games. No worries about tiring him out.

  •

    [Comment from Drewski]
wait so you take Donovan off, but leave Beckham on??

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Indeed, but he's been a bit injury prone, as has Gatt.

  •

    [Comment from PeterG]
US might be ddeper if Klinsi would show Lichaj some love.

  •

    Jeff Carlisle:

Decent. But let's see how he does in a January camp. That's the next step.

  •

    [Comment from Pog]
Agreed, somebody needs to replace Cherundoko eventually. But does Beita have the defensive chops?

  •

James Tyler: Donovan off, Pontius on for MLS. Kennedy in for Nielsen also.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Shot by Ramires is saved easily by Dan Kennedy, who is now in goal.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Changes for Chelsea. Turnbull in for Hilario. Ferreira on for Cole. Luiz on for Terry. Malouda on for Benayoun.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: I don't think it's too serious. Strictly precautionary.

  •

    [Comment from Troy]
Any updates on the Messi injury?

  •

    Jeff Carlisle: And we're off!

  •

Jeff Carlisle: I wouldn't say the US is all that deep at fullback. Heck, look how long it took them to find a decent LB in Fabian Johnson. And with Timothy Chandler's future up in the air, and Cherundolo's advancing age, I'm not feeling all that secure about the back line.

  •

    [Comment from Karl]
I just don't think Beita makes the cut with all of the quality full backs in USMNT

  •

Jeff Carlisle: I'm still not convinced by NYRB's defense. And where do they play Marquez? Yes, Eskandarian said he should sit, but *everyone* has been saying that, and yet he still plays. Not an easy decision for Hans Backe.

  •

    [Comment from PeterG]
Agree with you Jeff, though Cahill might finally fit that CAM role that Ballouchy, Lindpere, et al. have cycled through. Most interesting part of this (point made by Eskandarian at SI) is that with the emergence of Barklage, Lade, and the addition of Le Toux, NYRB is suddenly both talented and deep.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: We'll see. I think the US is Beita's first option.

  •

    [Comment from rocco]
I think Beitashour's option is with Iran

  •

    Jeff Carlisle:

No. Kaka might be heading back to Milan.

  •

    [Comment from sam]
so is Kaka the first big name that the Cosmos sign?

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Marin has looked okay, but needs to pull the trigger to shoot more quickly. Lukaku looks like a beast (I know he's only marginally new). Hazard isn't playing.

  •

    [Comment from John R.]
Can't watch the game so this thread is all I have. How have the Chelsea additions looked so far?

  •

Jeff Carlisle: I think more the latter. He'll be good in the locker room guy as well which given NYRB's past, is important. Big question is his fitness. MLS is an athletic league. Does he have enough left in the legs? We'll see.

  •

    [Comment from Paddy]
How will Tim Cahill affect the Red Bulls/MLS in general? Is he a dynamic player or more of just a solid, high profile addition to the league?

  •

    [Comment from Guest]
Let's see how the 2nd half turns out. The substitutions made will tell if Olsen is going for a result or not.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: I think Beitashour will get a call up in January to the USMNT camp. Perfect time to get an extended look.

  •

    [Comment from sam]
does beitashour have an USMNT and/or European future

  •

Jeff Carlisle: And we have our first haiku!

  •

    [Comment from PeterG]
MLS All Stars / Find themselves tied with Chelsea / Not bad for 'Murca

  •

Jeff Carlisle: I thought Chelsea has looked very dangerous in transition. MLS defense has hung tough though.

  •

    [Comment from Paddy]
Chelsea looks far more dangerous on the attack, with the MLS hanging back and settling for scoring chances on the counter-attack. Coincidental considering Chelsea was using the hanging back strategy throughout the Champions League.

  •

    [Comment from Harold]
It has to be tougher to be on the same page when you're not an actual team. The passing and anticipation doesn't look as good on the MLS side I think.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: One thing to look for in the second half from MLS junkies. (And I know you're out there.) RSL head coach Jason Kreis is not a big fan of the All-Star game. His team plays at home to Vancouver on Friday too, so it will be interesting to see how much playing time the RSL guys get.

  •

    [Comment from Liam]
Yah sorry i dont really like either of them

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Overall, a fairly impressive display from the All-Stars. Certainly they are playing better than they did against Manchester United the last two years. Twellman had a good point on the broadcast too in that the two outside backs are holding up much better in this game than they did the last two years. DeMerit has also been outstanding.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Hmm. That's not exactly the standard I would hold him too there Liam.

  •

    [Comment from Liam]
Hey at least he's not as bad as suarez

  •

    [Comment from Marty]
Can't beat a good finger wag

  •

Jeff Carlisle: It's cumulative Sean. Beckham barks at players and referees in a way I never saw him do in the EPL and La Liga.

  •

    [Comment from sean]
do people still care about beckham losing it in that game? it really wasn't that bad....

  •

Jeff Carlisle: I'm here. Not going anywhere.

  •

    [Comment from Marty]
JC are you taking a break - I hope not. Don't want to listen to Lalas.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: And we're at half-time. Expect tons of changes to start the second half. Wondo engaging in a friendly conversation with Terry as the two walk off.

  •

    [Comment from Marty]
    A lot?

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Darren Mattocks too there PeterG.

  •

    [Comment from PeterG]
Speaking of the NYRB, Conor Lade might upset your ROL prediction with the form he's in as of late.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Essien hacks down Beckham, who remarkably, doesn't wag his finger in the Chelsea man's face.

  •

    James Tyler: A bit, Marty?

  •

    [Comment from Marty]
MLS goalie Nielsen looks a bit like Gunther on Friends.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Two minutes of stoppage time here.

  •

    [Comment from PeterG]
For a story that's "unconfirmed" by the NYRB, Tim Cahill is sitting remarkably close to Erik Soler.

  •

    [Comment from Mike]
I like what I'm seeing from Marin though I worry he might get pinned as a one trick pony cutting in from the left and shooting far post.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Agreed Misty. DeMerit has looked solid. In my MLS Midseason Awards piece, I had DeMerit as Defender of the Year.

  •

    [Comment from Misty]
DeMerit is having a good game

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Oooh! Henry just misses after a pass from Beckham.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Chelsea with what looked to be a ton of looks at goal, but no one will shoot. Marin finally goes for goal. His first effort is blocked by Alonso, and then another from distance is easily caught by Nielsen.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Lukaku almost off to the races, but DeMerit with a huge tackle to stifle the threat.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Nice buildup for the All-Stars, but Morrow's cross is ultimately headed clear.

  •

James Tyler: MLS looking far sharper. To be expected given the midseason.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: I think the EPL's profile is so high it doesn't need something like an All-Star game.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Cole with a long drive that DeMerit has to hop over. It goes out for a goal kick.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Ramires tries to put Lampard in on goal, but Morrow is there to break it up.

  •

    [Comment from PeterG]
Should the Premier League have an All-Star game? Would this be NFL style unwatchable or NBA style occasionally great.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: This one was injury induced for sure there Drewski.

  •

    [Comment from Drewski]
substitues this early? we might actually see Hazard play the full second half.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Morrow does well there to break up a combination between Ivanovic and Ramires.

  •

    [Comment from Marty]
Collin got his Liberty Bell rung!

  •

    James Tyler: Or something.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: We're in the 36th minute BTW.

  •

James Tyler: Valdes causes the River End to blast off into outer space, such was the gusto of its collective rapture.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Philly crowd loves it.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Henry tries to pick out Wondo, but the SJ striker is offside. Carlos Valdes coming on for Collin.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Marin shot blocked after good work from Cole.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Pace has definitely picked up for both teams.

  •

    [Comment from PeterG]
    Chelsea looks energized.

  •

    [Comment from Mike]
Terry seems in constant search for redemption

  •

    [Comment from Jason]
John Terry making up for his mistake!

  •

    [Comment from Jason]
    YEAHHH

  •

James Tyler: Collin's brave to look for a header just moments after the concussion check.

  •

    [Comment from Marty]
    What a ball from Lampard!

  •

    [Comment from Karl]
I'm sure Anton is gritting his teeth right now....

  •

  •

Jeff Carlisle: John Terry with the header right off the corner. Collin had just come in and lost him.

  •

    Jeff Carlisle: GOAL CHELSEA!

  •

    Jeff Carlisle:

Oooh! Lampard with a deflected shot that goes just wide. Corner Chelsea.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: I think Twellman does very well. Not afraid to criticize players. That's something a lot of former players who become analysts struggle with.

  •

    [Comment from Karl]
Does anyone else love Taylor Twellman?

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Man. Like 15% for a club like Chelsea. Maybe.

  •

James Tyler: Collin's head hit Essien's hip as the pair fell. Did not look "with it" once the contact happened.

  •

    [Comment from JK]
Where would the combined payroll of the MLS All-stars rank in the EPL?

  •

    [Comment from Drewski]
    eva carneiro sighting!!!

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Dominic Kinnear, though I can't see him leaving the US.

  •

    [Comment from PeterG]
They've been talking about Ben Olsen on TV a lot tonight, are there any US coaches who might have a shot at moving abroad to bigger and better things?

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Collin breaks up an Chelsea counter by bulldozing Essien in the center circle. Collin comes off the worse for it.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Ramires is whistled for a foul on Morrow. He's warned by the ref and Ramires gives it right back. Free kick is cleared.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Ball played to Lukaku who tries to pass to Terry, but Alonso hustling back breaks up the attack.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Henry tries to slip Wondo through, but it's cut out. Chelsea on the counter...

  •

    [Comment from Kaigor]
Lucky goal by Wondo. He missed the 1st touch, just saying...

  •

    [Comment from K2]
Great goal - but I'll keep doubting until he does it in US hoops.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Lampard tries to play Marin through, but good deflection by Alonso.

  •

    [Comment from Drewski]
That was more Terry's mistake then Wondo's goal. He should have done better.

  •

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Probably not Jake, but it's a goal he'll cherish no doubt.

  •

    [Comment from Jake]
Wondo with a goal against the European champions. I think that'll shut up most of the doubters

  •

    [Comment from Guest]
man, wondo looks a lot better than in the gold cup

  •

    [Comment from PeterG]
Is it just me or would Wondo and Henry be a phenomenal combination if they played together? Henry the creator and Wondo the consummate poacher.

  •

    [Comment from Karl]
    WONDO!!!!!

  •

    Jeff Carlisle:

Donovan pounced on a ball in midfield, slipped it wide for Henry whose low cross deflected off Terry and Wondo was there to pounce. 1-0 All-Stars.

  •

    Jeff Carlisle: Chris Wondolowski!

  •

    Jeff Carlisle: GOAL ALL-STARS!!!

  •

    [Comment from Drewski]
You are the only one Karl.

  •

    [Comment from PeterG]
    I'm with you Karl

  •

    [Comment from Karl]
    I like the unis

  •

    Jeff Carlisle:

Beitashour with a decent cross, but it's cleared by Terry I believe.

  •

James Tyler: All-Stars look very polished thus far. A real telepathy and ease of interplay you wouldn't expect from a team given 48 hours to prep. Good as they all obviously are, such chemistry takes time.

  •

    [Comment from Marty]
    The All star unis suck!

  •

    [Comment from Drewski]
What is up with the All star uniforms? It is like they got Foil on the numbers.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Lampard's ball over the top is just a tad too strong for Lukaku and Nielsen claims.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: I have to say, the pace is a bit tame at the moment. Not much energy really.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Beneyoun slips a ball into Lampard, but his touch pass is too heavy. Goal kick for the All-Stars.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Chelsea is pretty well covered at center back I think. You do what you have to do to get on the field.

  •

    [Comment from PeterG]
Interesting that Ivanovic is at right back today, I thought he publicly came out saying that he preferred to only play center back from now on.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Lampard's pass for Marin just outside the box is too hot to control, All-Stars take over.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Ramires with a mazy run in from the right flank, but his clipped pass is easily claimed by Nielsen.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: That looked promising initially.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Long pass to Donovan is played back to Henry, but his pass is cut out by Essien.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Chelsea controlling things so far, stringing plenty of passes together.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Good tackle by Collin to thwart Cole's overlapping run.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Lots of forced passes in midfield for the All-Stars. Need to spread out a bit.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Corner falls to Terry, but his back-heel is cleared.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Collin with a shaky touch that falls to Lukaku. Collin recovers to put cross out for a corner.

  •

James Tyler: Chelsea's shakiness is of little concern to Di Matteo. He's here to collect data on his squad. Size them up. Track minutes, who works well together. So many new toys to integrate ahead of the season. What matters is getting fitness levels up.

  •

    [Comment from Pog]
In defense of MLS: it's gotten a lot better the last few years. And it's tons of fun in person.

  •

    [Comment from PeterG]
Mr. Demerit, where was that against Ghana? (still sore)

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Ramires with a dangerous cross that skips through to Marin, his shot is blocked, falls to Cole, who fires over.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Long pass for Lukaku, but a nice tackle by DeMerit snuffs out the threat.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: It's early. The biggest goal is to gain fitness along with sharpness. They'll figure things out as the start of the season gets closer.

  •

    [Comment from PeterG]
Jeff, is it just me or has Chelsea looked fairly unimpressive during their preseason stint. I know everyone's out of form but the defense has been quite shaky.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: I think it's a case of who is available. And how much money.

  •

    [Comment from Mike]
How has MLS decided which EPL team to invite, and any chance they ever invite the likes of Real Madrid or Barca?

  •

    [Comment from Karl]
I only hope Lampard comes to MLS after Oscar and co. begin to dominate the midfeild

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Becks serves it up but Hilario claims.

  •

James Tyler: Chelsea's iconic white shirts. History. Joy. MLS All-Stars making life difficult for us with their shimmering gold numbers.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Terry slips and handles the ball. Free kick to the Beckhams.

  •

    Jeff Carlisle: And age.

  •

    [Comment from Misty]
Why has DeMerit fallen off the MNT? Did his injury have that much of an impact?

  •

    [Comment from PeterG]
Hey guys, great to be back with the analysis, I've missed this since the Euros. Any word from the psychic Sloth on the score tonight?

  •

Jeff Carlisle: De Rosario with a long range effort that Hilario easily gobbles up.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Manchester United jumped on the All-Stars early the last two years. MLS will need to settle into this match without conceding.

  •

    [Comment from Misty]
Re: Torres. I think there is something to him not having the faith of Del Bosque, but I think there was even more to having Fabregas and so many great midfielders on the team.

  •

    Jeff Carlisle:

    And we're off!

  •

    Jeff Carlisle:

These things take time. The league is only 17 years old.

  •

    [Comment from Marty]
Unfortunately, the MLS keeps us hanging on for the bigger better but it never gets here. Women's team trumps them I'm afraid.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Probably around English championship level, but opinions vary.

  •

    [Comment from Mike]
Compared to the EPL and the top leagues in Europe, where does MLS rank?

  •

Jeff Carlisle: But why play that little? Clearly Torres did not have the faith of Del Bosque, otherwise he would have played much more.

  •

    [Comment from Jay23]
Torres was allowed to play for about 120 minutes over the tourney....pretty damn good form if u ask me....

  •

    Jeff Carlisle:

Bigger, better, but also still lagging the best leagues. No shame in that.

  •

    [Comment from Harold]
Where will the MLS be 20 years from now?

  •

James Tyler: Fun sidenote: my cousin-in-law's parents are Philly season-ticket holders. And he was the lad who walked out with Dwayne De Rosario in the pregame. Wish my parents had done that for me...

  •

    [Comment from Karl]
I could probably score 5 goals with those midfeilders. Mata is just the tip of the iceberg......

  •

Jeff Carlisle: I'm not of the belief that Torres' Euro form was that great. Two goals against Ireland and then another in garbage time of the final. But like I said, he'll get lots of opportunities.

  •

    [Comment from Nolan H]
Torres- gotta believe his Euro Cup form will continue. He seems more confident even from a year ago.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Good question Mike. Would you believe 10? Chelsea asked for more apparently and MLS relented. Understandable. That actually explains why Michael Farfan was called in at the least second to supplement the All-Star roster.

  •

    [Comment from Mike]
How many subs do the coaches get in this game?

  •

    [Comment from Jay23]
Torres=17 goals this season....if the service comes, he will score

  •

Jeff Carlisle: A lot of the same faces, although the loss of Drogba is significant.

  •

    [Comment from Mike]
How good is this Chelsea team compared to the team that won the Champions League?

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Good shout there Karl, although I think we'll see lots of Bocanegra this cycle.

  •

    [Comment from Karl]
Future defense for USMNT Gatt Ream Cameron F. Johnson (i think he can play both sides)

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Fernando Torres? Don't laugh, he'll get his shot. Nice opportunity for Lukaku as well. There's also Daniel Sturridge.

  •

    [Comment from Harold]
Who steps up in Drogba's place for Chelsea?

  •

    [Comment from James]
Wondo is a solid finisher w/ limited ability to create, and he isn't getting any younger. I'd be shocked if an EPL team came in for him. Championship level material at best...

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Don't think he'd make EPL. I think he'd have to go to a lower level Euro league first. And he's running out of time.

  •

    [Comment from Sebastian]
Wondo's age may make it a bit harder but I could maybe see him landing a short deal with a mid level EPL team (If he even wants to leave SJ)

  •

    [Comment from Karl]
Very true. Nolan H. Gotta look for Gatt, Shea, Boyd, and Corona to step up and become the next big thing.

  •

    Jeff Carlisle:

That's a big concern Nolan. Will these guys step up? I think it's good that guys like Ream and Cameron are now playing overseas. Players like Boyd, Joe Gyau, and Mix Diskerud will need to develop quickly.

  •

    [Comment from Nolan H]
Where are the young American players other than Agudelo for USMNT? Seems like by next world cup we will have many players in late 20's and early 30's.

  •

    [Comment from Pog]
Hopefully I will not be by a keyboard if (WHEN!) the MLS scores, or else I am going to drop some serious "Midnight Ride of Paul Revere" in here.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: I think Wondo is too old at this point. (He's 29). Plus, he's a local kid from near San Jose. He loves playing for his hometown team.

  •

    [Comment from Karl]
Could Wondolowski transfer across the pond with a continued form like he has now?

  •

    [Comment from Sebastian]
I think it'll be 3-2 MLS. The last 2 Man U teams were better than this Chelsea team and people forget that the MLS won the first 6 matches of this game before the Man U slip ups.

  •

    [Comment from matt]
4-1 Chelsea... Marin, Lampard, Ivonavic and Hazard will score, and Henry will score as well.

  •

    [Comment from Nolan H]
Chelsea will break out early in 2nd half. 4-2 Blues

  •

    [Comment from Karl]
2-1 MLS. They are in season. Wondo scores, and Donavan. Hazard scores on the other side.

  •

    [Comment from AVB]
    4-0 MLS ALL STARS

  •

    [Comment from Pog]
4-3 MLS! One if by land, two if by sea!

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Depends on if they are trying to settle in with new clubs. I wouldn't expect to see those guys. Players who are more settled? Yes.

  •

James Tyler: CHELSEA: Hilario - Ivanovic, Terry, Cahill, Cole - Essien, Ramires - Lampard, Benayoun, Marin - Lukaku

  •

    James Tyler: Teams again:
MLS ALL-STARS: Nielsen, Beitashour, DeMerit, Morrow, Collin, De Rosario, Donovan, Beckham, Alonso, Henry, Wondolowski.

  •

    [Comment from Sebastian]
Do you think we'll see any of our Euro based players in the match at Azteca. It's just a couple days before the start of many of the Euro Leagues so I'm mostly just expecting MLS and Primera Divison players.

  •

    [Comment from faisel jobic]
    2-0 chelsea

  •

    James Tyler: 3-1 Chelsea...!

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Good question James. I'll go with 2-1 Chelsea.

  •

    [Comment from Jason]
Anyone have a final score guess or prediction??

  •

Jeff Carlisle: I'm not holding my breath on Holden. Comeback is now slated for October. He has to prove his fitness before I'll even think about his USMNT prospects.

  •

    [Comment from Karl]
I just can't wait for Holden to be healthy. Bradely, Donavan, Dempsey, Holden, J. Jones, that group just makes me excited. Throw in Shea in form again, and the USMNT could compete in 2014.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Wish I could. He's definitely struggling to live up to the weight of expectations it seems, and not handling it well.

  •

    [Comment from James]
    Explain Brek Shea...

  •

    [Comment from Pog]
LFC 1-2 Roma FT. Fun second half!

  •

Jeff Carlisle: I also liked what I saw from Gomez. I wouldn't mind seeing Altidore and Gomez paired together to see how that works.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Definitely Karl, especially with regards to Altidore. His club did him no favors by preventing him from being released early. Something tells me the feud between Klinsmann and the AZ coach Gertjan Verbeek isn't over by any means.

  •

James Tyler: @Nolan H -- Marcotti's written about Di Matteo and his plans for Chelsea. Worth a look if you missed it last week.
    http://espn.go.com/sports/soccer/story/_/id/8176320/roberto-di-matteo-looking-bring-style-back-chelsea-gabriele-marcotti

  •

    [Comment from Karl]
Hazard looked very impressive v. Seattle. However Sounders D doesn't match up with that of Man United.... On another note, I think Boyd/ Aguedelo are the future up front for USMNT, but do you think Gomez or Altidore will feature prominetley for WC cycle in USMNT?

  •

Jeff Carlisle: It will definitely be interesting to see how Chelsea evolves now that Di Matteo has the job full time. I'm also curious how he handles the older generation going forward. Obviously he had the right touch after he took over last year, but his time horizon is different now.

  •

    [Comment from Nolan H]
From the moves made so far by Di Matteo, it looks like Chelsea is going for a Barcelona/English blend with moves like Marin and Hazard... shifty, quick, with big defenders backing up that attack.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: I'm surprised Chelsea went in for Marin, but not being able to make Germany's squad these days isn't exactly a major criticism. They're loaded.

  •

James Tyler: Also don't forget that Everton needs money. Even a million pounds will help. Club has been looking for an owner for years, now. And Cahill's at the end of his career. You take what you can get.

  •

    [Comment from Ryan]
Thought's on Marin? Not good enough for Germany Squad, how can he be step up for Chelsea?

  •

Jeff Carlisle: I'm curious to see how Cahill fits in with NYRB. He has a lot of good qualities, but there are concerns that his legs are shot. Tough to tell how that might translate into MLS though.

  •

    [Comment from Karl Schneider]
Was also suprised that Tim Cahill transferred across the pond. A big lift for the Red Bulls however. He was still pretty decent. Maybe time for Donavan to move across the pond to Everton before WC 2014.

  •

    Jeff Carlisle:

Time will tell Nolan. But I like what I"ve seen from Hazard in the past. Funny to think that Marin and Michael Bradley were teammates with Moenchengladbach not too long ago.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Handy feature, huh. Be well.

  •

Pog: No worries. (I didn't realize you could send private messages!)

  •

    [Comment from Nolan H]
Is Hazard and Marin the real deal?

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Good question Sebastian. If the past is any indication, I think it will go to penalties. I recall the game against Everton a few years ago being decided that way.

  •

    [Comment from Sebastian]
So if this game draws will we see PK's or Extra Time? Or will they just call it a tie

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Sorry about that Pog. Didn't see the end of your post. My bad.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: He's had some bad luck with injuries, Karl. Plus, Gatt was supposed to play a big part in the U.S. men's Olympic effort. We all know what happened there.

  •

James Tyler: Teams warming up at the moment. Keepy-uppy the order of the day.

  •

James Tyler: Can we send Charlie Adam to Blackpool?

  •

    [Comment from Karl Schneider]
Why isn't Gatt on the USMNT?

  •

    [Comment from Scoreboard Operator]
Actually, that logo-swap analogy would work better in the other direction, since Arsenal are the ones starving their citizens/fans (of trophies) (can't post that one...)

  •

Jeff Carlisle: And Charlie Adam has pulled a goal back for Liverpool. 2-1 to Roma.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: There's still considerable time though, isn't there Pog? Unlike the MLS transfer window, which is set to close in a couple of days if I"m not mistaken.

  •

    [Comment from Pog]
While we're killing time (and since I'll have to hop off around the time the game actually starts), one more storyline: Lukaku's presence in this game means that, sadly for me, he is not actually being loaned to Fulham. (At least not yet.)

  •

Jeff Carlisle: I'd like to see Gatt move on to a better league. All in good time I suppose.

  •

James Tyler: CHELSEA (not at all like my probable 4-2-3-1): Hilario - Ivanovic, Terry, Cahill, Cole - Essien, Ramires - Benayoun, Lampard, Marin - Lukaku

  •

    [Comment from Karl Schneider]
In other USMNT news, Gatt got yet another goal for Molde. He really is something eh?

  •

James Tyler: Jeff: the worst music imaginable. But then again, if you saw my iTunes collection, you'd see that I am not one to judge.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: For those wondering what the heck S.O. is talking about, when the North Korea players were being introduced today prior to their game against Colombia, their names were put beside the flag from *South* Korea. Not Hampden Park's finest hour.

  •

    Jeff Carlisle:

That would go over about as well there S.O., though I doubt Chelsea would walk off the field.

  •

    [Comment from Scoreboard Operator]
Was thinking about emulating my colleague in Glasgow and showing an Arsenal logo next to Ashely Cole's picture tonight

  •

Jeff Carlisle: JT, what music is blaring over the PA at the moment?

  •

Jeff Carlisle: I think that's a conservative estimate Pog, but we'll see how it shakes out. I think the owners of Red Bull might want raid their New York franchise and bring some players back to Austria.

  •

    [Comment from Pog]
Boyd has attempted 3 overhead kicks in his last two games. (2 in the friendly, 1 in the season opener.) But he looks like he might score 100 goals in that league.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: In other news, the US women overcame a slow start in their opener against France to come back and win 4-2; goals by Wambach, Morgan, Lloyd, and Morgan again.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: For those that missed it, here is JT's preview of tonight's All-Star match.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Now 2-0 to Roma.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Doesn't speak well of the Austrian league does it? I fear for Terrence Boyd.

  •

    [Comment from Mike R.]
Can we talk about the real story? Dudelange's upset of the century in CL qualifying!

  •

  •

James Tyler: @TwistyMaze -- Thank you, sir. Despite sounding like a bit of Ikea furniture, Jonjo is a future star. Provided that Jay Spearing is dumped in the River Mersey.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Hopefully Wondo will get some sweet deliveries from Beckham and Co.

  •

    [Comment from Pog]
Having watched a lot of Wondo this summer, I'm really interested in how he'll do against a more disciplined defense like Chelsea. The man feasts on disorganized back lines, but I'm not sure he'll find one tonight.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: That still looks like the full monty from the CL champs.

  •

James Tyler: Di Matteo noted yesterday that he would be doing plenty of rotations; the Blues even requested the opportunity to use extra subs tonight for that purpose.

  •

James Tyler: I will update that as soon as able.

  •

James Tyler: Cech -- Ferreira, Cahill, Terry, Cole -- Mikel, Lampard -- Meireles, Hazard, Malouda -- Lukaku.

  •

    [Comment from TwistyMaze LittlePassage]
Side note - James, I gave you a hard time during Euros about the future of the English squad (compared to Germany). I'm eating that now - best player on the pitch (er... infield?) at Fenway tonight... Jonjo Shelvey! (yeah, friendly and all, but he still looked good!)

  •

    [Comment from TwistyMaze LittlePassage]
Woohoo for Jeff too! (I thought you were going to be on gamecast instead of with us here)

  •

James Tyler: I'm hearing a Probable XI at the moment...

  •

James Tyler: The atmosphere is beginning to crackle. Fans and players all in happy moods.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: I don't have the Chelsea lineup as of now. James, can you enlighten us?

  •

James Tyler: Good evening from a muggy, resplendent PPL Park.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: MLS All-Stars (4-4-2): Nielsen; Beitashour, Collin, DeMerit, Morrow; Beckham, Alonso, De Rosario, Donovan; Henry, Wondolowski

  •

James Tyler: Just saw Mr. Bradley's goal. Curse him.

  •

    [Comment from Pog]
    Allright chums, let's do this.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Let's get to the lineups shall we?

  •

Jeff Carlisle: It's 1-0 to Roma by the way.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Indeed we are TwistyMaze. I will be joined shortly by the incomparable James Tyler, who currently has his head in his hands now that Michael Bradley has scored against his beloved Liverpool.

  •

    [Comment from TwistyMaze LittlePassage]
    James! You're back!!! Woohoo!

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Greetings everyone! Welcome to our live coverage of tonight's MLS All-Star game between, well, the MLS All-Stars and reigning UEFA Champions League champions Chelsea.
