  •

James Tyler: Anyway, many thanks to all of you for spending your Monday afternoon with us!

  •

James Tyler: We can try, Jan. We can try.

  •

    [Comment from Jan in Cardiff]
Can we hope for another 7-5 thriller?

  •

    [Comment from Sean R.]
Shaka, you are the man! Also thanks to Everyone else that joined in! alwyas fun

  •

James Tyler: The return of Hatem Ben Arfa was positive, mind you. 70 good minutes, and he'll only improve his match fitness from here.

  •

James Tyler: Indeed, Brad. Alan Pardew has work to do.

  •

    [Comment from Brad]
Not good result for Newcastle at all, especially going up against Man City Saturday.

  •

James Tyler: We'll have more Boot Rooms this coming weekend, I reckon. Newcastle hosts Man City on Saturday morning, 745am ET. There's Reading vs. Arsenal on Monday, 3pm ET.

  •

James Tyler: Result lifts Fulham clear into 13th on 20 pts. Newcastle in 14th on 17.

  •

James Tyler: Rodallega, Riether, Sidwell all great for Fulham. Newcastle took too long to fix its midfield, the early 4-2-3-1 formation didn't help either. Cisse and Ba need to work on their communication skills around the penalty area.

  •

PCarrESPN: Only other PL teams that are winless on road are Reading and QPR.

  •

James Tyler: Good game, overall. Plenty of action, plenty of pace.

  •

PCarrESPN: Fulham ends a 7-game winless streak. Newcastle still winless on road this season.

  •

    [Comment from Pog]
    Thanks Shaka

  •

    [Comment from man u fan]
Looking forward to more American-based discussion, Shaka! We do watch

  •

James Tyler: Hate to say I predicted 2-1. But I will.

  •

  •

James Tyler: FT: Fulham 2, Newcastle 1. An eight-game winless skid ends with a fine result today at Craven Cottage.

  •

James Tyler: Last attack? Schwarzer catches a final cross.

  •

Shaka Hislop: Thanks all. It was good fun.

  •

James Tyler: Martin Jol plays with his watch, rather nervously.

  •

James Tyler: Inside the final minute of four added at the end. Berbatov wins a cheeky free kick deep down the left flank as he tries to run out the clock.

  •

Shaka Hislop: Next time it won't be one of my former teams. I'm jinxed!

  •

James Tyler: Free kick, Newcastle, wide left. Delivery is poor, Fulham clear. Return ball into the box is caught comfortably by Schwarzer.

  •

    [Comment from Michael Owen]
    Shaka, I miss you too!

  •

    [Comment from Jan in Cardiff]
Thanks for joining us Shaka! Great to have you.

  •

James Tyler: Lovely cross by Jonas but Schwarzer lurches off his line to fall on it. Dangerous low cross, that. Skidding across the six-yard box.

  •

    [Comment from Doug]
    Gotta keep the faith Shaka!!

  •

James Tyler: Hope you can join again soon!

  •

James Tyler: Thank you so much for taking the time to join us today. We'll be looking for your goalkeeper defense on the next ESPN Press Pass episode.

  •

James Tyler: Shaka! Wish this had turned out better for Newcastle, honest!

  •

Shaka Hislop: Ok. I'm throwing in the towel. It has been a thoroughly awful 'weekend'. (I know it's Monday but...)

  •

James Tyler: Chance for Newcastle: Ba with a backward header on Jonas' cross but it's wide.

  •

James Tyler: Bigirimana floats in a tasty cross for Ameobi and Cisse but kudos to Aaron Hughes for his brave clearing header. Newcastle with nearly 60% of the ball in the second half. Still 2-1 down.

  •

James Tyler: Mladen Petric hits the bar from range! All happening at the moment.

  •

James Tyler: Ba is wide open in the box but can't turn and shoot smoothly. When he does, it's blocked by Aaron Hughes.

  •

James Tyler: Felt great to see him tally. Had a tough time at Anfield to say the least.

  •

    [Comment from Doug]
I figured JT would pick Joe Cole's just for spite...

  •

    James Tyler: 87th minute.

  •

James Tyler: Chance for Fulham! Berbatov's low shot from range is parried by Krul and saved on the second attempt.

  •

James Tyler: SUB, NEWCASTLE: Vurnon Anita off, Sylvain Marveaux on.

  •

James Tyler: SUB, FULHAM: Rodallega off, Mladen Petric on. Warm applause for the ex-Wigan forward.

  •

James Tyler: SUB, NEWCASTLE: Cheikh Tiote off, Gael Bigirimana on.

  •

James Tyler: Gosh, yes. Just didn't want to be accused for my Scouse bias.

  •

    [Comment from RR United]
    Glen Johnson's screamer....

  •

James Tyler: I don't understand the logic at all but hope that the fans do indeed forgive you.

  •

    [Comment from Jamie]
I just want to apologize to all Newcastle fans. As an American, I chose Newcastle since it reminds me of Cleveland, Ohio and now they're awful.

  •

James Tyler: For pure impact, RvP. Though Everton's game-winner was gorgeous for different reasons: long ball, perfect flick, Jelavic's cool low finish. Such a sucker punch.

  •

    [Comment from Josh]
Best goal of the weekend? Thrown coins do not count

  •

James Tyler: Chance for Newcastle: Santon pulls it back for Jonas at the edge of the box. He has a look, finds no good options so drags it onto his left foot and shoots low. Similar to the Ba shot. Schwarzer flops on it.

  •

Shaka Hislop: Pardew not going anywhere.

  •

James Tyler: Not much if the per-year fee is low.

  •

    [Comment from Salvatore]
How much do you think it costs to buy out an 8 year contract?

  •

James Tyler: Chance for Newcastle! Ba has space in front of Hangeland, pulls a low shot with his left foot but Schwarzer's equal to it.

  •

James Tyler: Yep -- and we'll be featuring all the Press Pass Extra segments on ESPNFC.com daily.

  •

Shaka Hislop: Don’t forget to watch Press Pass every night on ESPNews at 2am ET / 11pm PT. You can also download the show as a podcast on iTunes.

  •

James Tyler: Chance for Newcastle: Shola Ameobi has room to shoot from the top of the box. Low and right at Schwarzer.

  •

James Tyler: Rodallega, I assume you mean, is playing wonderfully well. Would be my pick. Full of industry, tireless running. Has found plenty of room between defenders.

  •

    [Comment from Sean R.]
rhodendron is playing his best game since maybe wigan time

  •

James Tyler: Lovely counter by Fulham but a poor touch at the top of the box gives the Magpies a chance to clear. Such a sweeping forward move though. Lovely.

  •

James Tyler: Newcastle free kick takes an eternity as three hover over it. It's blocked into the wall.

  •

  •

James Tyler: First off, tsk tsk for tuning in late. Second, two deflected goals (one for either team) and a lovely Duff-to-Rodallega set piece for the Cottagers' go-ahead goal.

  •

Shaka Hislop: Hope your instincts are better than mine Matt R!

  •

    [Comment from Travis]
For those of us who just tuned in to catch the end, recap thus far? Please :)

  •

    James Tyler: 15 minutes left.

  •

    [Comment from Matt R]
I'm feeling a Ba equalizer coming soon

  •

James Tyler: Chance for Fulham: lovely play by Dejagah to flick an overhit cross back into Berbatov. The Bulgarian genius slots it artfully for Sidwell but the midfielder blasts over from just inside the box.

  •

Shaka Hislop: Would feel better with a more creative midfielder in support. I like Anita, but he's not a 'difference-maker'.

  •

James Tyler: Retired due to, well, not wanting to bother anymore. Keeping his talents for the Prem.

  •

James Tyler: He's lost interest. Bulgarian NT in transition, not likely to feature at a major tournament for a while and he's up there in age.

  •

    [Comment from Matt]
Why does Berbatov not play for his national team?

  •

James Tyler: 19 minutes left. Fancy Newcastle's chances, Shaka? How do you think Cisse-Ba-Ameobi will work together?

  •

James Tyler: Rodallega in behind the Magpies back four again, low shot is easy enough for Krul to smother.

  •

James Tyler: Off the post for Newcastle! Curling shot by Coloccini, of all people, from the left edge of the box. Schwarzer sprawling.

  •

James Tyler: Indeed, Shaka. As they said on the broadcast, must be a fitness issue. But no Sylvain Marveaux to create from deep?

  •

James Tyler: SUB, NEWCASTLE: Ben Arfa off, Shola Ameobi on.

  •

Shaka Hislop: First game back, but I thought he was looking good.

  •

    PCarrESPN: Netherlands...Vitesse.

  •

James Tyler: He went there from Chelsea, if I recall correctly. Think he's back in France?

  •

Shaka Hislop: Ameobi on for Ben Arfa. Interesting.

  •

    [Comment from Mancini]
Completely random question. Whatever happened to Gael Kakuta? I remember him on Fulham a few years ago and thought he might flourish there...

  •

James Tyler: Chance for Fulham: Sidwell lobs one over the defense for Berbatov but Coloccini does well to get back between the Bulgarian and the ball, toe-poking it away.

  •

    PCarrESPN: and Chandler...seven.

  •

PCarrESPN: ...Danny Williams and David Yelldell. Six officially.

  •

James Tyler: Quite a few. Boyd, Cherundolo, Jones, Johnson...

  •

    [Comment from Jan in Cardiff]
I wonder how many Americans are in the Bundesliga?

  •

James Tyler: Heh. Advantage should go to the attacker if it's right in line, Shaka. Agree there. Agree too that the duo are linking better.

  •

Shaka Hislop: But better between...Left out a word there...

  •

James Tyler: Aston Villa and Stoke City.

  •

    [Comment from man u fan]
What teams do Lichaj and Edu paly for?

  •

Shaka Hislop: Onside! But between Ba and Cisse.

  •

James Tyler: Cisse hits the bar! Was offside anyway. Ben Arfa slides it through as Cisse got behind Hangeland.

  •

James Tyler: Up the other end, mild panic as Rodallega does well to intercept and break, one vs. two. He loses the ball at the edge of the box. Berbatov does well to reach it but he can't shoot. Newcastle's defense recovers.

  •

James Tyler: Good, tricky run by Jonas Gutierrez, who's been quiet today. Ball's worked wide right, cross is perfect for Ben Arfa at the back post but he mis-controls. Still does well to keep it in play. Nothing comes of the second chance, mind.

  •

PCarrESPN: Dempsey, Friedel, Howard, Guzan, Cameron, Lichaj, Edu.

  •

    [Comment from man u fan]
That article was depressing.... only 7 Americans in the EPL. Can you list them for me?

  •

James Tyler: And now Demba Ba's limping for Newcastle. 65 minutes played, Fulham back on top.

  •

PCarrESPN: Five league assists for Duff this season...he had two in three-plus seasons at Newcastle.

  •

    [Comment from Pog]
Rodallega has been getting on the end of set pieces all season and having a lot of trouble keeping the ball down. Got it down this time.

  •

    James Tyler: Fabricio Coloccini? Indeed.

  •

    [Comment from depressed red]
the massively haired guy, on defense, he's having a hard game

  •

James Tyler: Damien Duff with the assist. I mistakenly said he was subbed off. Silly me. Was Alex Kacaniklic who gave way for Dejagah.

  •

Shaka Hislop: Coloccini wrong side. Good defender but still prone to lapses.

  •

  •

James Tyler: HUGO RODALLEGA. Had a decent game. Lovely ball in, Rodallega gets between Tiote and Coloccini, nods unmarked past Krul. No chance.

  •

    James Tyler: GOAL FOR FULHAM

  •

PCarrESPN: Here's a list of all EPL players by nationality (at beginning of season): http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2188297/Premier-League-set-international-yet.html

  •

    [Comment from TottBot]
PCarr, can we get a breakdown of the top ten percentages of BPL players by nationality? Thanks in advance.

  •

James Tyler: Free kick, Fulham. Right side of the field, 20-25 yards out. Cross likely.

  •

    James Tyler: Ouch.

  •

    [Comment from Clint Dempsey]
    Miss me yet, Fulham?

  •

James Tyler: Cottagers should stick in a 4-4-2. Like for like.

  •

James Tyler: SUB FOR FULHAM: Damien Duff off, Ashkan Dejagah on.

  •

James Tyler: Chance for Fulham: Kacaniklic to Rodallega to Berbatov to Sidwell, who continued his run from deep. Krul out sharply to narrow the angle and smother the shot. Good goalkeeping.

  •

James Tyler: Chance for Fulham but Kacaniklic's shot is miles over from the edge of the box. Took it on his right peg after a chest-down by Rodallega.

  •

James Tyler: Yes, you should Shaka! Defend 'em!

  •

Shaka Hislop: I'm coming out swinging in defense of goalkeeper's on Press Pass later!!

  •

    Shaka Hislop: That's terrible!! Lol.

  •

James Tyler: Lovely cross is just too high for Rodallega, who was unmarked in the middle.

  •

James Tyler: Perhaps bored by the first half lack of action? :)

  •

    [Comment from JAC]
I swear to god Mark Schwarzer is drunk.

  •

James Tyler: What a difference a goal can make...!

  •

James Tyler: Chance for Newcastle but Demba Ba's low shot is easy for Schwarzer to save from 25 yards. Had time and space to run in possession.

  •

Shaka Hislop: Now all of a sudden Fulham's midfield have gone walkabout.

  •

James Tyler: Ben Arfa cutting in time and again from the right flank when in possession.

  •

James Tyler: Pace has picked up again as the result's back in balance.

  •

Shaka Hislop: Got a deflection. Tough on Schwarzer.

  •

    [Comment from Deflection]
It's my weekend to shine baby!

  •

James Tyler: Take the lucky breaks, build on them. Mark of a good team. Everyone experiences good and bad luck in equal measure. What counts is how you roll with those ups and downs. Can the Magpies go on to capitalize?

  •

    [Comment from Brad]
That was the confidence boost that Newcastle needed.

  •

    [Comment from Pog]
Schwarzer was completely fooled. Thought it was a cross drifting to the center.

  •

    [Comment from mark]
good shot horrible positioning from GK

  •

Shaka Hislop: Hell yes I'm taking it! Hahahahaha!!

  •

PCarrESPN: Ben Arfa ends a 10-game goalless drought in all competitions.

  •

James Tyler: What was Schwarzer doing? Seemed to have no clue where the ball was in flight!

  •

Shaka Hislop: Riise clearly worried by Ben Arfa's change of pace and stood off him.

  •

James Tyler: You'll take it though, eh Shaka!

  •

PCarrESPN: Two goals in two career appearances vs Fulham for Ben Arfa.

  •

James Tyler: Hatem Ben Arfa shoots speculatively from the right flank, cuts in, takes a shot on his left foot. Big deflection and loops over Schwarzer.

  •

Shaka Hislop: what a strike. Cruel deflection off Riise.

  •

  •

  •

James Tyler: Proverbial something from nothing!

  •

    James Tyler: GOAL FOR NEWCASTLE

  •

    [Comment from Jan in Cardiff]
I think you have to be tough even when you're not in the wall. I see defenders turn away from shots that they could have blocked far too often.

  •

James Tyler: 52nd minute. Danny Simpson's cross is cleared by Hangeland.

  •

James Tyler: I think Mancini said it all. Lamented that you have to be tough in the wall. If it hits you, it hits you.

  •

    [Comment from CFCKaje]
JT, What is to be said about Nasri not staying big and strong in the wall on Van Persie's FK. For me, if a guy is that scared and has to flail his leg while hiding behind Dzeko, they deserve to be scored on.

  •

James Tyler: Chance for Fulham! Berbatov played in by Rodallega following the long throw. Opts to shoot from narrow on the left with the outside of his right foot, it slashes into the side netting. Should have crossed for Rodallega who'd made a decent central run.

  •

James Tyler: Fulham's fine. Newcastle could use more creativity in central midfield.

  •

    [Comment from mark]
should either team make any changes or too early to tell?

  •

James Tyler: Ben Arfa and Ba combine in the Fulham half but Ben Arfa's ball forward is intercepted.

  •

James Tyler: Fulham corner well defended. Can Newcastle break with speed?

  •

James Tyler: I reckon it's the makings of a fine sitcom, honestly.

  •

    James Tyler: #POGISBIASED

  •

    [Comment from Pog]
Balotelli to Fulham. Berbatov + Balotelli = magic. Plus, they would probably murder each other.

  •

James Tyler: Chance for Newcastle! Anita blazes one over from the edge of the box.

  •

    James Tyler: No subs.

  •

  •

  •

James Tyler: Back for the second half at Craven Cottage.

  •

Shaka Hislop: I think he'd stay if he felt everything was right. Felt certain he'd stay at RM for a long time. it'd be the club's decision if he moves on this summer.

  •

James Tyler: 1%. Because you can never say 0%.

  •

    [Comment from Troy]
Chances of Mourinho back to Chelsea?

  •

James Tyler: Jury's out. I don't think City's the right place for him to thrive. Too much pressure, too much agita with Mancini and too much competition.

  •

    [Comment from Nitro]
Mourinho to Manchester United i do not think will happen. Mourinho is a mobile manager, he does not stay at one club too long. I think Manchester United will be looking for a more stable manager.

  •

    [Comment from nymsg]
Will Balotelli become a top prem player while at City?

  •

James Tyler: Pep to City. Sheikh Mansour's handlers have been hiring plenty of ex-Barca lads in the boardroom and club.

  •

    [Comment from mark]
I don't think that move would happen. Pep is more likely, but still hard to say since he can choose whatever he wants

  •

James Tyler: Nope. Think he's playing well, but not there yet.

  •

    [Comment from Kyrillos Rizk]
Do you think Torres has regained his liverpool form?

  •

James Tyler: I think it'll happen. Not sure why. Funny feeling. Intuition. Having a second crack at owning the Prem seems like something he'd be into. And who better to replace Sir Alex Ferguson?

  •

    [Comment from Simon]
What do you guys think of Mourinho to Man Utd in a few years time?

  •

James Tyler: More embarrassing might be the "punishments."

  •

    [Comment from Jay Jay Okocha]
Fines, suspensions, anything. It's an embarrassment to the game.

  •

James Tyler: Not sure what we're able to prove, if anything. Players exaggerate contact. It's simple gamesmanship. Some do it more artfully than others.

  •

    [Comment from TottBot]
Can we prove that diving wasn't always an issue, but it's been magnified since the advent of instant replay?

  •

PCarrESPN: Pretty even game stats-wise. Big difference: Fulham completing 57% of passes in attacking third. Newcastle at 42%.

  •

James Tyler: No team is going to spite itself to prove a point like diving. At least not overtly. One wonders what, if anything, the tipping point will be.

  •

    [Comment from mark]
Thats an interesting thought @priceboy. on the one hand it shows concern for ending diving, but on the other they are trying to win and b3enching cazorla would be silly.

  •

James Tyler: Grab us a Bovril, Shaka.

  •

Shaka Hislop: I need a coffee!

  •

James Tyler: Well, there are many reasons to bench Nani. Or Ashley Young. (Latter played v. well yesterday).

  •

    Shaka Hislop: Thanks Paul! :-)

  •

    [Comment from YP]
SAF did that to Nani a couple seasons ago

  •

James Tyler: Woof, a diving question. I think we're at the point where we just have to accept it as part of the sport. Everyone's doing it. Too time-consuming for the FA to retroactively punish, little chance of video replay being installed so it can be punished during games. Just not sure what the options are. Would be fun to see a manager take a stand though.

  •

    [Comment from priceboy]
Has a BPL manager ever suspended one of his own players for diving? Would be interesting to see reaction if Wenger sat Cazorla for a game or two.

  •

PCarrESPN: Oops...Fulham is winless in 9 straight PL games when scoring first.

  •

James Tyler: Ha! He never listens, Shaka. Never.

  •

James Tyler: HT: Fulham 1, Newcastle 0. Fun game, this. Two goal line clearances by Riether, plenty of scoring chances for the Cottagers but It's Steve Sidwell's deflected goal that separates the teams at the break.

  •

Shaka Hislop: Paul, weren't you warned about those stats???

  •

PCarrESPN: Newcastle is winless in 60 straight Premier League games when trailing at halftime (45 losses, 15 draws). Last win: Dec. 2006 vs Reading.

  •

James Tyler: Just one minute of added time to play. And it's done.

  •

James Tyler: Doing the little things.. Pressuring Fulham in possession, attacking with pace...

  •

    [Comment from mark]
looks like newcastle is stepping up the pressure and working it around a lot better

  •

James Tyler: Poor marking by Fulham to leave Ba in such space.

  •

James Tyler: Chance! Corner falls to Demba Ba at the back post but his low swept shot is blocked by Sascha Riether near the line. Schwarzer stranded.

  •

    Shaka Hislop: Can't see it.

  •

    [Comment from man u fan]
So, how about Thierry Henry getting another try in the EPL, Shaka?

  •

Shaka Hislop: Please don't blow the half time whistle ref...

  •

James Tyler: Better from the visitors, this. Corner earned but punched clear by Schwarzer. Anita's follow up shot is blocked. Another corner for the Magpies...

  •

James Tyler: Send in some questions for special guest, ESPN Press Pass legend Shaka Hislop too.

  •

PCarrESPN: Fulham has 13 yellows this season, tied with Norwich for fewest in the league.

  •

James Tyler: Sidwell clips Tiote from behind in midfield.

  •

    PCarrESPN: Research also confirms that.

  •

    James Tyler: FACT.

  •

    [Comment from TottBot]
Craven Cottage has 100% of the Michael Jackson statues in the BPL. More than any other stadium in the league.

  •

    PCarrESPN: Research confirms this.

  •

    [Comment from man u fan]
Sunderland doesn't like scoring goals is all that I got out of that stat

  •

James Tyler: Five minutes to half time... Keep sending questions for Sir Ian Darke. Use the twitter hashtag #FCBootroom to get them seen and answered.

  •

PCarrESPN: After Ba, Michu is 2nd with 46.2%, then Suarez with 45.5%, then Fletcher.

  •

James Tyler: Danny Simpson is playing like a right winger tonight. Well forward again and receives it from Ben Arfa but his cross is cleared by Brede Hangeland.

  •

PCarrESPN: Now he "only" has 43%...6 of 14.

  •

PCarrESPN: He did at one point.

  •

    [Comment from Jan in Cardiff]
I thought Steven Fletcher had more of Sunderland's goals than anyone else?

  •

James Tyler: Chance for Fulham but Riise, in space, blasts over from 25 yards. Still seeking his first goal for Fulham. Scored plenty of those for Liverpool and Roma.

  •

Shaka Hislop: No different at all.

  •

    [Comment from man u fan]
Shaka, how did the big match Sunday make you feel?

  •

James Tyler: Good cross by Kacaniklic, who made it past Simpson and to the byline, but it's an easy take for Krul in the middle.

  •

Shaka Hislop: if that's the criteria, then I'm in!!

  •

    [Comment from Jan in Cardiff]
I just realized that Shaka fits right in with the Boot Room. BIASED towards Newcastle.

  •

PCarrESPN: Demba Ba has 59% of Newcastle's goals this season (10 of 17), the highest percentage of any player in the league.

  •

James Tyler: Ben Arfa clips Rodallega after losing possession. Free kick, Fulham. 37th minute.

  •

James Tyler: Cabaye is that playmaker, usually from deep.

  •

    [Comment from Raza_88]
I dont get why Pardew doesnt play both Ba and Cisse up front; why does one of them have to play wide? Its not as if they have a playmaker in the hole; they should just play a 4-4-2 with Cabaye/Tiote in center and Ben Arfa wide.

  •

James Tyler: Never thought Steve Sidwell could look this dominant.

  •

Shaka Hislop: Most times Cisse and Ba are too far apart. Ben Arfa and Anita pushing up, Fulham dominating the MF.

  •

James Tyler: Good point: Cisse and Ba up front, Ben Arfa and Gutierrez wide. The wide presence is helping restrict Fuhlham's full backs from marauding every time they're in possession.

  •

    [Comment from Brad]
At least now Pardew is going for system adjustments early. Lessons learned.

  •

James Tyler: Free kick for Fulham inside the Magpies half as Williamson climbs over the top of Rodallega. Set piece comes to nothing.

  •

    James Tyler: Sorry, you're right.

  •

Shaka Hislop: That's better. fulham have had everything their way until that.

  •

    [Comment from Pog]
I think it was actually Riether who cleared that header off the corner.

  •

James Tyler: You may not. Made your bed, now lie in it.

  •

    [Comment from mark]
can i change my vote to fulham edging newcastle

  •

James Tyler: Chance for Newcastle! Anita's corner is met by Coloccini and Schwarzer makes a fine save to his right to keep it out,

  •

James Tyler: Better; corner won for Newcastle on the right.

  •

James Tyler: Half an hour in, Newcastle not looking up to snuff. Losing the midfield battle and constantly playing off the back foot.

  •

James Tyler: Chance for Fulham! Berbatov's shot cleared off the line! Lovely move with Rodallega and Riether overlapping from deep, cross caused pandemonium in the box and eventually, Dimitar's shot is blocked with Tim Krul beaten.

  •

James Tyler: Man, so many important deflected goals this weekend...

  •

    [Comment from Cole]
    Or Collins against Liverpool.

  •

James Tyler: It does, Shaka. It does.

  •

Shaka Hislop: Williamson delelction worse. Nasri crueler. If that makes sense.

  •

    [Comment from Cole]
Nasri, that game and goal was so much more important.

  •

    [Comment from Joe]
    Or Dempsey's against Everton?

  •

James Tyler: Surely own goals involve some kind of intent... That deflection was fluke.

  •

James Tyler: Crueler deflection this weekend: Williamson's today or Nasri's yesterday?

  •

Shaka Hislop: Just saw the replay again, Sidwell's goal surely.

  •

James Tyler: Good idea by Ben Arfa, angling a cross field ball for Ba but Aaron Hughes does well in the air to make sure it doesn't get there.

  •

    [Comment from Pog]
Hangeland just nutmegged a Newcastle defender. #Mayans

  •

    [Comment from Faiz K]
Newcastle really miss Cabaye don't they?

  •

James Tyler: Chance for Fulham! Corner headed over as Brede Hangeland raced in to meet it. Second corner flicked away by Demba Ba, Newcastle clears.

  •

Shaka Hislop: Defensively Newcastle haven't been that convincing. Nor up front. I'm a little worried here.

  •

James Tyler: 25 minutes gone. More entertaining game than the usual Monday night fare. Lovely challenge by Danny Simpson to quash another good Fulham move.

  •

James Tyler: Ba and Cisse not clicking so far today. Of certain concern to Pardew, who's trying to figure out the best look for his attacking players.

  •

Shaka Hislop: Great stat Paul! That's more like it.

  •

James Tyler: I think we're all on board with that, Jay Jay.

  •

PCarrESPN: Then how about this...Fulham has dropped 14 points from winning positions this season, 3rd-most in the league.

  •

    [Comment from Jay Jay Okocha]
I just had an epiphany: Sidwell looks exactly like Spud from Trainspotting. Is this common knowledge?

  •

James Tyler: Craven Cottage in glorious voice. Cottagers responding in kind on the field.

  •

James Tyler: Not a chance. Though that eight year contract was a bit silly...

  •

    [Comment from depressed red]
    pardew on the hot seat?

  •

James Tyler: Good defending by Coloccini to shrug off Rodallega, who was in hot pursuit of a through-ball down the right channel.

  •

Shaka Hislop: Yeah Paul. I'm a nervous enough fan as it is!

  •

James Tyler: Don't put stats in like that around Shaka, Paul...

  •

PCarrESPN: Newcastle is winless in 31 straight league games after conceding the first goal.. Last win was Oct. 2010 at West Ham.

  •

    [Comment from TottBot]
Collocinni sounds like a delicious pasta

  •

James Tyler: Could have been 2-0 for Fulham! Superb save by Krul after Berbatov dispossessed The defender following Tiote's lazy pass

  •

Shaka Hislop: Good save Tim Krul. What are Newcastle doing at the back??

  •

    [Comment from Pog]
Duff to Sidwell! The old people score!

  •

    [Comment from Salvatore]
thats really harsh on Newcastle. Wicked deflection

  •

  •

    PCarrESPN: John Carr...different person...no relation

  •

James Tyler: Lovely play down the right by the home side. Rodallega plays Duff in, he wins it back from Santon and cuts it back for Sidwell whose shot deflects mightily off Williamson and in off the underside of the bar.

  •

    [Comment from Arthur]
The name says PCarr, you call him Paul, JT but the article says it was posted by 'John Carr'.

  •

PCarrESPN: If that goal remains Sidwell's, then he has four this season, his most in a league season since 2006-07 with Reading.

  •

    James Tyler: GOAL FOR FULHAM

  •

James Tyler: Chance for Fulham! Lovely long cross field pass behind Santon for Duff, his cross finds Rodallega in the middle but his touch is poor, eventually his shot is over the bar. Better control and it could have been 1-0.

  •

    Shaka Hislop: OOOoooo.....

  •

Shaka Hislop: Pardew's teams are normally well versed defensively. Simpson curiously deep there.

  •

James Tyler: Better from Newcastle! Superb link-up between Ben Arfa and Ba but the 1-2 pass was over hit.

  •

    Shaka Hislop: jeez......

  •

James Tyler: Given that Fulham had to replace Dempsey AND Dembele, you knew it would be a struggle. But I think the reinforcements have plenty of potential. Rodallega and Berbatov is a curious pairing.

  •

Shaka Hislop: Me too. Not really a Ruiz fan. He's done a whole lot better than I thought he would since his arrival tho I have to admit.

  •

    PCarrESPN: Thank you.

  •

    James Tyler: No class, Paul!

  •

James Tyler: Half-chance for Newcastle! Great first-time cross from Cisse in from the right forcing Schwarzer to sprint off his line and smother the ball.

  •

    [Comment from EmpireITtech]
I expected Fulham to be worse tbh

  •

PCarrESPN: Shameless plug for this Five Aside piece on Berbatov's revival this season: http://es.pn/RkUMxT

  •

Shaka Hislop: Big blow to City. I thought. Not necessarily for the 3 points dropped, but thought they were really poor till tevez came on. Huge questions marks over mancini now surely.

  •

    [Comment from RedHalfofManchester]
Fair to say that both of these teams are underperforming this season? Definitely Newcastle but arguably Fulham too?

  •

James Tyler: Was a fiery one, eh? Shame the fans left the most memorable moment on the contest at the end. League-wise, I don't think it's decisive. A six-point lead looks tasty anywhere but in the Prem. Such is the unpredictability from week to week. That and both United and City have weaknesses.

  •

    [Comment from Inar]
Thoughts about the significance of the Manchester Derby yesterday JT and Shaka?

  •

James Tyler: 12 minutes in. Game settling into a more familiar pace now. Both sides burning off their early energy. Ben Arfa chases a long ball into the left corner but he can't get there. Goal kick, Fulham.

  •

    [Comment from Jan in Cardiff]
Sorry I'm late JT. Didn't realize we had a MNF Boot Room. There goes all the work I was going to get done tonight. Also, welcome Shaka!

  •

James Tyler: Berbatov controls effortlessly down the right channel. Finds Duff wide but Davide Santon defends well. Young LB having a good season.

  •

PCarrESPN: Including today, Fulham hasn't scored in over 5 hours of playing time.

  •

Shaka Hislop: Yeah. you expected it. Old saying, let's just get thru the first 20 and build from there.

  •

    James Tyler: Hello, Statsie.

  •

PCarrESPN: Did the game start yet?

  •

James Tyler: Riether's cross is decent enough but easy for Tim Krul to catch.

  •

James Tyler: Don't be nervous, Shaka! Weather the storm, make it through this early spell. Did you find that away games often brought that manic energy from the opening kickoff?

  •

James Tyler: All four full backs are getting forward early. Sascha Riether's booming cross from the right corner is cleared by Williamson.

  •

Shaka Hislop: Good start by Fulham. I'm nervous.

  •

James Tyler: Chance! Flicked on by Chris Baird at the near post but blocked.

  •

James Tyler: Corner for Fulham off Jonas Gutierrez. Craven Cottage in full-throated song.

  •

    James Tyler: Stonker?

  •

    [Comment from TottBot]
What's the preferred nomenclature for a powerful Riise shot?

  •

James Tyler: Steve Sidwell blocks a Magpies clearance right into Tim Krul's arms. Curious, that.

  •

James Tyler: Bright start for both teams, this. Just what we need on a cold, awful Monday.

  •

James Tyler: Free kick for Newcastle inside the Fulham half. Cleared as far as Danny Simpson, whose deep right-flank cross is headed well over by Mike Williamson.

  •

    James Tyler: Absolutely not.

  •

    [Comment from nufcusa]
    not a penalty anytime.

  •

James Tyler: Half-chance for Fulham! Kacaniklic played clean through the middle having cut in from the left flank, he's nudged by Coloccini and tumbles in the box but no penalty. Right decision, obviously. Great angled run, Danny Simpson let him go.

  •

James Tyler: Fulham from right to left. Early attack for Fulham as Riise's long ball is eventually worked wide right to Damien Duff. His cross is too strong and the Magpies eventually clear.

  •

    James Tyler: We're off!

  •

  •

James Tyler: We'll be handling questions at half-time also. Use #FCBootroom to tweet them for Sir Ian Darke and Steve McManaman, esq.

  •

James Tyler: Both sides set on 17 points, languishing in mid table. Win tonight would be massive for either side, though Magpies in better recent form.

  •

James Tyler: One of my top 3 fave players of all time.

  •

    [Comment from Sweet Carroll Nine]
LeTissier needs to be in the All-Languid team.

  •

James Tyler: NEWCASTLE: Krul -- Simpson, Williamson, Coloccini, Santon -- Anita, Tiote -- Cisse, Ben Arfa, Gutierrez -- Ba.

  •

James Tyler: FULHAM: Schwarzer -- Riether, Hughes, Hangeland, Riise -- Duff, Sidwell, Baird, Kacaniklic -- Berbatov, Rodallega.

  •

    James Tyler: Lineups again:

  •

James Tyler: Teams are out on the pitch at Craven Cottage....

  •

James Tyler: Worth it. So much so that they made a statue of it in Paris. Iconic moment, one we'll never forget!

  •

    [Comment from Morty]
    Until the head butt.

  •

  •

  •

James Tyler: Well, that All-Languid team might not win much, but Zinedine Zidane was supremely languid. Extreme economy of motion. Never made a run if it wasn't worth it.

  •

    Shaka Hislop: Newcastle!!!

  •

    [Comment from Evan]
Thinking of Berbatov, who's on the All-Time Languid Class team?

  •

Shaka Hislop: I was as surprised as I was disappointed when I heard Antigua beat T&T!

  •

    [Comment from JamaicanUtdFan]
shaka how suprize were you when u heard Guyana beat Jamaican 2-1 in the Caribbean cup

  •

    [Comment from James]
Hirshy brought up the fact that Hart has been shaky lately. Do you think this is a serious cause for concern or do you think he will snap out of it?

  •

James Tyler: Keys to today's game? Been loving the play of Alex Kacaniklic on the left wing for Fulham lately. Really dynamic, positive player. Good distributor, too, which is something Berbatov needs around goal. Also curious to see how Vurnon Anita manages in defensive midfield for Newcastle. Not been too impressed with him since signing. Doesn't appear comfortable yet in the Prem, though it does take time.

  •

James Tyler: Ben Arfa, no question. Taarabt still too liable to become selfish in his play.

  •

    [Comment from Jason]
    Ben Arfa or Taarabt?

  •

Shaka Hislop: Chelsea. But probably not till the summer.

  •

James Tyler: I'll note about Cisse playing wide that it worked well last season when Ba was playing wide in support of Cisse. Yet they both want to lead the line which is tricky in terms of fitting with the rest of Pardew's XI. Will be interesting to see if Cisse adjusts to that role, having been so used to fronting the line.

  •

    [Comment from Jason]
Where do you think Falcao ends up?

  •

    [Comment from Sean]
Shaka, how do you think Ben Arfa will perform in a more central role? And Cisse playing a wider position?

  •

James Tyler: I think the key for Chelsea is balance in the midfield. Started to show it with Oriol Romeu under Benitez, though his injury at the weekend throws the entire thing in question once more. Whether the Blues make a run at a Falcao type or adding some much-needed ballast in front of the back for -- or both! -- is anyone's guess.

  •

Shaka Hislop: NUFC are a fantastic club. Never a dull moment.

  •

    [Comment from Matt]
Do you think a player like De Rossi would suit Chelsea to interchange with John Obi Mikel?

  •

Shaka Hislop: Agreed. Whether Torres really does come good or not (and I'm still unsure he will) CFC don't have much cover in that department.

  •

    [Comment from Evan]
Shaka, what's your fondest memory of your time with Newcastle?

  •

James Tyler: I think if Abramovich can make a move, he will. Firing Di Matteo unexpectedly certainly proves he's not the wait-and-see type.

  •

    [Comment from Matt R]
Do you think Chelsea's transfer actions this January depend on how Torres holds up through the rest of this month?

  •

Shaka Hislop: He's a good keeper. He'll be a great signing for you. Takes time.

  •

James Tyler: The look on Hugo's face at full-time was heartbreaking. Couldn't believe what happened.

  •

    [Comment from TottBot]
Shaka, can you suit up and start in front of Lloris for our next match?

  •

Shaka Hislop: This isn't a negotiation!! Hahahaha!!

  •

James Tyler: That way we all end the day happy. But what do you think to the Magpies' wobbly start to the season?

  •

James Tyler: Ha! Sorry Shaka. Let's split the difference and say a creditable 1-1 draw.

  •

James Tyler: FULHAM: Schwarzer -- Riether, Hughes, Hangeland, Riise -- Duff, Sidwell, Baird, Kacaniklic -- Berbatov, Rodallega.

NEWCASTLE: Krul -- Simpson, Williamson, Coloccini, Santon -- Anita, Tiote -- Cisse, Ben Arfa, Gutierrez -- Ba.

  •

Shaka Hislop: What?? Easy Newcastle win James!! :-)

  •

    James Tyler: Lineups...

  •

James Tyler: Fancy a 2-1 Cottagers win.

  •

    [Comment from Sean]
James, Whats your scoreline prediction for the game?

  •

James Tyler: No chance. Though I agree about his brilliance.

  •

    [Comment from Jason]
Do you think Michu could be sold in the transfer window? He is terrific.

  •

James Tyler: Excellent! Still waiting on lineups for FULHAM v. NEWCASTLE too.

  •

Press Pass: Hi from Press Pass. Shaka will be here shortly...

  •

James Tyler: Something we're all wondering about. Stunned by so many late goals this season.

  •

    [Comment from Dave]
    What happened to spurs yesterday

  •

James Tyler: Still so much of the season to go, Evan. But their slump has been a shock.

  •

    [Comment from Evan]
Dissapointing to see the number of injuries Newcastle has suffered, really though they were going places

  •

James Tyler: No complaints have been filed as of yet. One to watch. Was an awful, petulant lash but I think both teams are eager to put the ugliness behind them.

  •

    [Comment from Guest]
Will tevez face any disciplinary action for kicking Jones yesterday?

  •

    James Tyler: Debatable.

  •

    [Comment from TottBot]
Topical Requisite Question: Is Papiss Demba Cisse back?

  •

James Tyler: None as far as I can divine. The fact that Arsenal spent so much on strikers in the summer makes me think Wenger would rather perish than buy.

  •

    [Comment from Adam]
Any truth to the rumor of Arsenal trying to sign Ba in January ?

  •

James Tyler: Sorry. Equal opportunity room.

  •

    [Comment from Jamie]
And here I was hoping we'd get away with not talking about L'pool...

  •

James Tyler: Yes AND no. Will take more than 4 goals in a week, but it's a damn fine start. More than the goals, it's his confidence. Looks full of the swagger he had years ago.

  •

    [Comment from ChelseaChad]
Requisite question: Is Fernando Torres back?

  •

James Tyler: Doubtful given that he's been hurt for a bit. But I reckon plenty of clubs will be trying to lure players from Newcastle given the Magpies' swoon this season.

  •

    [Comment from Matt]
Will any clubs be making a move for Ben Arfa?

  •

James Tyler: Enjoyed that Joe Cole got on the scoresheet. Though he's much maligned -- by me, a fair bit -- his goal was elegant and a nice reminder of what he's capable of.

  •

James Tyler: Indeed. Huge. Immense. Completely unexpected. I had no clue they had it in 'em.

  •

    [Comment from LFC fan]
wad a massive win for LFC yesteday

  •

James Tyler: Berbatov. I have a thing for his casual style. Man oozes awesomeness.

  •

    [Comment from Nana]
Berbatov or Ba? Who would you pick?

  •

James Tyler: Fulham v. Newcastle, kicking off at 3pm ET. To make it better, we'll have ESPN Press Pass analyst and ex-Newcastle goalie legend Shaka Hislop here for the game.

  •

James Tyler: It's Monday, there's footy on, so there's a Boot Room open.

  •

    James Tyler: Hello, all!
