Watch Live on: ESPN, ESPNDeportes, ESPN3.com
  •

James Tyler: Goodbye from us for now! Cheers to Roger, Ravi and Jason York for their trenchant insights.

  •

    [Comment from Mike]
1-0 Victory to Denmark is classic Dane strategy. This team continues to execute the gameplan that has lead to success to perfection.

  •

    [Comment from Fred T. Frog]
    We're all pround of Denmark

  •

    [Comment from Eric]
All I have to say is nail biting defense will be the star. Circa CFC 2012.

  •

James Tyler: Thanks all for settling in for this stunning result. Good news for some: Leander Schaerlaeckens will be here at 2:15 pm ET to guide us through Portugal vs. Germany. See you back here for that, and I'll be here tomorrow morning at 11:30 for Spain v. Italy in Group C!

  •

    [Comment from rogbennett via Twitter]
Denmark's win a reminder that in international football, team organization and tactical guile trumps individual flair and skill

  •

    [Comment from JamesTylerESPN via Twitter]
Off-field issues still to be addressed by UEFA of course, but wonderful footy thus far at #Euro2012.

  •

    [Comment from Xavier]
Pround of Denmark!! They pulled a chelsea vs Barcelona!! Now watch how every1 says Denmark got lucky.....

  •

James Tyler: Salute the heroic Danes for a sublime effort.

  •

Jason York: 10 different Dutch players had an attempt at goal, just five Danish players did.

  •

James Tyler: The Netherlands will need at least four points to have a shout. But they should press for two wins. It's the only way.

  •

    [Comment from JohnBrewinESPN via Twitter]
    It's dazzling, it's dynamite. It's...Denmark! #euro2012 #euro92

  •

    [Comment from Daniel]
Do the Netherlands have to beat both Portugal and Germany to advance now?

  •

    [Comment from Jon]
    go danes!!!!

  •

    [Comment from rogbennett via Twitter]
Denmark Win! Show me a Group of Death that is Death-ier than this one and I will call you a Liar

  •

    [Comment from TottBot]
    The Dutch are done

  •

    [Comment from Mike]
    Holy Group of Death!

  •

    [Comment from Bryan]
    Great. Counterattacking football wins again.

  •

    [Comment from Jerry]
Have to be gutted after this result. Appreciate the chat as always gentlemen! Thanks!

  •

    [Comment from Eric]
    1992?

  •

    [Comment from Cole]
    WOW

  •

  •

    James Tyler: THAT IS THAT

  •

James Tyler: Time for one more attack and Sneijder cues it. Finds Kuyt wide right but the ex-LFC man's cross is poor. Danish crowd pleading for the final whistle. Another cleared cross, Robben cuts infield but Kjaer slams it long...

  •

    [Comment from rogbennett via Twitter]
Denmark Win! Show me a Group of Death that is Death-ier that this one and I will call you a Liar

  •

James Tyler: Chance! RvP flicks a header over the bar from the fringe of the box.

  •

    [Comment from Will]
    Danish Dynamo v2.0 perhaps?

  •

James Tyler: Really, Huntelaar, when you're begging and pleading for an iffy handball, something isn't right with the gameplan.

  •

    [Comment from Charlie]
We should've see this coming. The Danes have MUCH better hair than the Dutch

  •

James Tyler: Corner for the Netherlands and Sneijder booms it long... Heitinga puts another header wide of goal. Dismal. Poor. Woeful.

  •

James Tyler: Few may have expected the Danes to do this, but they have. TWO MINS OF ADDED TIME REMAINING

  •

    [Comment from PrestonV]
i'm not suprised by how well denmark is playing

  •

    [Comment from JamesTylerESPN via Twitter]
    Hup Denmark, Hup.

  •

    [Comment from Guest]
Never expected the Dutch to play with so little energy. Credit the Danes with a well thought out game plan and for wonderful execution!

  •

    [Comment from MIchael]
Excellent game from the Danes, the way they telepathically made Van Persie and Robben miss wide open nets repeatedly.

  •

James Tyler: Good cross for Huntelaar and he bangs it into a Danish defender. The entire Dutch side pleads for handball but the ref is unimpressed. Then Heitinga loses it and the Danes amble upfield.

  •

James Tyler: Dismal conclusion to this one... Bendtner nearly reaches a Route One special but Stekelenburg comes out. ONE MINUTE OF NORMAL TIME REMAINING.

  •

    [Comment from JamesHMartin via Twitter]
The final 15 minutes of this Netherlands match brought to you by Ambien #Euro2012

  •

James Tyler: Aging Dennis Rommedahl put in a fine shift also.

  •

James Tyler: Kvist, Kjaer, Agger, Anderson, Krohn-Dehli, all superb.

  •

James Tyler: Very true, Carlsen. Excuse us. Great performance by Denmark tonight.

  •

Roger Bennett: Whatever the opposite of Parking The Bus is... Holland are doing it now. So much firepower. So much talent. Tactical guile, not so much

  •

    [Comment from Carlsen - Denmark]
How about giving Denmark some love? this chat seems awfully Dtuch bias

  •

    [Comment from Vora]
95.7% of GFOP brackets are in danger with this result. The remaining 4.3% were submitted by Danes.

  •

James Tyler: Dutch fans still sporting brave faces, but this was the group game they were supposed to win. Really puts the Oranje behind the eight-ball to drop points here in that most deathliest of groups.

  •

James Tyler: Yeah, Kuyt is that versatile. I'll make no bones about my Kuyt bias.

  •

    [Comment from Mike]
    Kuyt in at RB?

  •

    [Comment from JamesTylerESPN via Twitter]
    Dirk Kuyt! Kuyt! #kuyt

  •

James Tyler: SUB FOR THE NETHERLANDS: van der Wiel off, Dirk Kuyt on

  •

    [Comment from Mark]
    VOWEL's had a historic day

  •

    [Comment from Jerry]
Chances of an equalizer? I'll put it at 30%. You want in on that action guys?

  •

James Tyler: SUBS FOR DENMARK: Rommedahl off, Mikkelsen on.

  •

    [Comment from Charlie]
Bendtner's Ego says it should be Bendtner,

  •

James Tyler: Aha! There is hope! Dirk Kuyt preps to enter!

  •

James Tyler: Eight minutes to play and the Dutch appear bemused. Not used to this, I suppose.

  •

    [Comment from MIchael]
Sneijder. Even in a losing cause he's been terrific.

  •

    [Comment from Jerry]
    POST had a good game.

  •

  •

Roger Bennett: Man of the match nominees? Eriksen? Poulson? Ade Healey?

  •

Roger Bennett: Whenever Adrian Healey say "Zimring" I think of that luggish actor who played Steve on Beverley Hills 90210

  •

James Tyler: Robben shoots over the bar (AGAIN) despite plenty of Dutch shirts in support.

  •

    [Comment from ESPNSoccernet via Twitter]
On the latest leg of his Poland trip, @JohnBrewinESPN is greeted by a sea of green as Ireland fans flock to Poznan. http://bit.ly/K9EYJu

  •

James Tyler: Doesn't even matter, Jayanth. Their problem is they can't score.

  •

    [Comment from Jayanth]
If the Dutch don't do something about their defence, expect the likes of Ozil, Gotze and Ronaldo to run circles around them.

  •

James Tyler: van der Vaart has woken the Dutch up a touch. Finds Sneijder wide left but the cross is nodded clear by Kjaer.

  •

    [Comment from JohnBrewinESPN via Twitter]
Bilic on being outnumbered by Irish: "We are expecting about 11,000 supporters. It is going to be very loud, believe me." #euro2012

  •

James Tyler: Robben shapes to shoot but Poulsen steals the ball at the last second.

  •

Roger Bennett: James Tyler would have scored that

  •

    James Tyler: THIRTEEN MINUTES LEFT

  •

James Tyler: Good inswinging corner but Andersen gets a flying fist to it. Danes clear Sneijder's follow-up cross.

  •

    [Comment from Aaron]
You know who would have scored that, James? Kuyt

  •

James Tyler: Van der Wiel wins a corner as his awful cross is deflected out.

  •

    [Comment from Andrew]
    Bendtner would have scored that

  •

    [Comment from Dwyane Wade Boggs]
Luuk de Jong would have scored that!

  •

James Tyler: Stunning from Sneijder. Several fired Inter managers will be wondering where that panache was last season.

  •

James Tyler: SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE EQUALIZER! Heroic defending by Andersen as Huntelaar is denied! Lovely ball by Sneijder between the Danish CBs for Huntelaar, he controls it well but fails to loft it over the keeper.

  •

Roger Bennett: What a ball. Lob City

  •

Roger Bennett: RVP would have scored that

  •

    [Comment from Jeff]
I wonder how the US National Team might fair against either of these teams...

  •

    [Comment from Jack]
Thanks for the stats today Jason. Great work!

  •

James Tyler: SUB FOR DENMARK: Eriksen off, Lasse Schone on.

  •

    [Comment from JohnBrewinESPN via Twitter]
Corluka fit to play for Croatia, says Bilic. #euro2012

  •

James Tyler: Robben free down the right, but his cross is overhit for van der Vaart. Another corner for the Netherlands... comes to nothing.

  •

Jason York: Klaas Jan-Huntelaar was the top scorer in Euro 2012 Qualifying, bagging 12 goals from 25 shots.

  •

James Tyler: Andrew: more a tactical shift. Need a second striker for the Danish defense to worry about. In theory, would open up more room for Sneijder and Robben from deep.

  •

    [Comment from Andrew]
Affelay has been the brightest spot for the Dutch? Fitness concerns? Why else would he be brought off??

  •

James Tyler: Hardly a high-five mood on the Dutch sideline, really. Van Marwijk waited an eternity to make the switch. Now, can the added striker unsettle Agger and Kjaer?

  •

    [Comment from Will]
de Jong denied the high five.

  •

Ravi Ubha: Interesting. Van Marwijk keeps RVP on.

  •

    [Comment from JamesHMartin via Twitter]
50 seconds for De Jong to commit first foul. On his game, clearly. #euro2012

  •

    [Comment from JamesTylerESPN via Twitter]
The fact that Agger and Kjaer both thrive in big Euro leagues means there's no fear in facing RvP or Robben.

  •

James Tyler: SUBS FOR THE NETHERLANDS: De Jong and Afellay off, van der Vaart and Huntelaar on.

  •

Roger Bennett: Deli's pointed facial features make him look like Tony Hibbert's Danish twin

  •

James Tyler: CHANCE FOR DENMARK! Krohn-Dehli forces a low save from Stekelenburg after a good infield run.

  •

James Tyler: Great defending by Lars Jacobsen to not only repel Willems' run, but win the ball back and hoof downfield. Take a bow, Lars. TWENTY MINUTES TO PLAY.

  •

    [Comment from JamesTylerESPN via Twitter]
All too comfy for the Danes. Daniel Agger could take a nap.

  •

Ravi Ubha: Willems hasn't done himself any harm with his performance tonight. Coped well enough with the threat of Rommedahl (when the Danes have gone forward that is).

  •

James Tyler: Decent delivery but Vlaar wins the header on the edge of the six-yard box.

  •

James Tyler: Rommedahl floats in a decent right-wing cross and the Dutch defender takes no risk, nodding it behind for a corner. Krohn-Dehli to take it... Dutch subs imminent.

  •

James Tyler: Good work by Bendtner is undone by Jacobsen whose cross from the right is overhit and devoid of accuracy.

  •

Roger Bennett: Dutch playing like Bayern. So much talent, they just throw glorious players on the field without too much of a plan, hoping their skills will just get it done

  •

James Tyler: Van der Vaart is prepping to enter.

  •

James Tyler: I blame Rudi Voller.

  •

Roger Bennett: Ronald Koeman has an enlarged prostate James. and chronic arthritis

  •

    [Comment from Chicago Gunner]
SEND IN BERGKAMP. He's retired? What about Cruyff?

  •

James Tyler: Another dashing infield run by Robben but his low shot doesn't trouble Andersen. Lack of ideas from the Dutch? 35 minutes left and plenty of pressure being created but little in the way of meaningful chances.

  •

James Tyler: Not on the subs bench for the Netherlands today: Frank Rijkaard. One senses his experience is missed here. No de Boer brothers, either. Ronald Koeman has a torn hamstring. Shame.

  •

Jason York: Possession pct 56-44 in favor of Holland.

  •

James Tyler: CLOSE FOR THE ORANJE! Robben puts a header wide following a fine near-post run and great cross.

  •

Ravi Ubha: I loved Boudewijn Zenden. Well before he was a central midfielder, Zenden tore up the wing.

  •

    [Comment from Jeff]
What's the possession differential? Must be huge for the Dutch

  •

James Tyler: CLOSE! Good free-kick delivery but the man at the far post was offside.

  •

Jason York: The Dutch have completed 18 passes into the penalty area so far, including 8 by Wesley Sneijder.

  •

James Tyler: Foul on Lars Jacobsen as he trips Jetro Willems. Cynical foul. Smart foul; Willems had room to run up the left wing.

  •

    [Comment from Aaron]
They need Overnars, Kluivert, and Bergkamp to come on...oh wait...

  •

James Tyler: Another corner for the Netherlands, easily their 3,165th of the game. Danes obdurate at the back. Sneijder's delivery is decent but Andersen springs from his line to grab it.

  •

Roger Bennett: Dutch should bring on shaqueel van persie

  •

James Tyler: Huntelaar and van der Vaart warming up...

  •

James Tyler: But Sneijder bends it into the top of the wall.

  •

James Tyler: Free-kick for the Netherlands as Kvist upends his opposite man. Sneijder fancies this one... 25 yards out and well left of goal.

  •

James Tyler: Not exactly an ideal game situation in which Eriksen can shine, but he's putting in a competent shift. Real star in midfield is Kvist. Disrupting every move.

  •

    [Comment from MIchael]
I heard so much about this Dane phenom Eriksen, where is he? He's hardly touched the ball.

  •

    [Comment from TottBot]
Has Huntelaar been through his warm-up? The kid is clinical in front of goal.

  •

James Tyler: I love watching Daniel Agger bomb upfield. Has a real elegance in his gait and gallop. Supremely comfortable with the ball at his feet. Nothing came of his latest sortie.

  •

    [Comment from Rugger]
    61st replacing De Jong

  •

James Tyler: Time to start the HUNTELAAR COUNTDOWN CLOCK. At what minute will KJH emerge? 56th minute right now...

  •

James Tyler: Bendtner does well to hold up possession on the left side of the box but cannons a shot off Ron Vlaar.

  •

James Tyler: THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN DEADLY! Poulsen runs to the byline left of goal and pulls back but Afellay, tracking back to play second-left-back, hoofs it behind under pressure to concede the corner. It amounts to nowt.

  •

Roger Bennett: 73% of stats are made up TottBot

  •

James Tyler: We have our ways, Tottbot. Jason is excellent, as is the rest of the Five Aside team.

  •

    [Comment from TottBot]
Where do they get these stats?!

  •

James Tyler: CLOSE! Heitinga leaping like a salmon and, unmarked, powers a free header well wide of goal.

  •

James Tyler: Corner after corner for the Dutch but no goal yet.

  •

Jason York: It's a statistical fact that Arjen Robben is going to shoot with his left foot almost every time. In all competitions since June 24, 2010, Robben has taken 165 of his 194 shots with his left foot.

  •

Roger Bennett: For the record... i would never write off RvP. He is one of the few players who can still deliver even when he is not playing at his sharpest

  •

    [Comment from Nate]
Afellay and Sneijder have looked really dangerous. Where's the penetration?

  •

James Tyler: 40 minutes to go...

  •

James Tyler: CLOSE AGAIN! This time, it's Ibrahim Afellay, gliding infield and firing right-footed. Misses Andersen's goal by inches. Goalie appeared beaten.

  •

    [Comment from Chris]
what a strike from van bommel!

  •

James Tyler: SO CLOSE FOR THE ORANJE! Mark van Bommel, of all people, howitzers from 30 yards and forces a fine sprawling save by Andersen. The Dutch take the corner short and Sneijder's near-post cross is eventually cleared. The Oranje practically camped in the Danish half.

  •

    Roger Bennett: RUDI KROL

  •

    [Comment from JamesHMartin via Twitter]
That is what you call a choke RvP #euro2012

  •

James Tyler: Van Persie again! This time he does fire one on goal but easy stuff for Andersen to mop up.

  •

    [Comment from Chris]
oh god van persie is struggling

  •

Roger Bennett: RVP has been watching too much Andy Carroll game film

  •

James Tyler: Again Sneijder and van Persie mesh well but no shot again.

  •

Ravi Ubha: If it remains scoreless, how long before Huntelaar comes on?

  •

James Tyler: CHANCE FOR THE DUTCH! Robben, AGAIN, glides infield onto his left foot but hoists his shot over the bar.

  •

Roger Bennett: Ribery in a sauna. Really. http://t.co/AmlsSMaU

  •

James Tyler: Slick passing for the Oranje down the left, van Persie plays Sneijder in behind the defense but he can't fashion a shot. Real backs-against-the-wall stuff from Denmark. Which is fun to watch... UNLESS you're rooting for the Netherlands.

  •

James Tyler: We're off again for Half No. 2... will Dutch fortunes turn?

  •

Jason York: 19 of the 21 goals that Denmark have conceded in European Championship finals tournaments since 1992 have come in the second half.

  •

James Tyler: Garlic and eggs? Mike, that's not good.

  •

    [Comment from Mike]
About to cook some garlic and cheese scrambled eggs, Rog!

  •

    [Comment from Ced]
threw my pancake at the tv in excitement when the Danes scored

  •

  •

James Tyler: Please, send Eggs Benedict.

  •

Roger Bennett: If you are eating brunch during the game. Feel free to update us on your progress

  •

James Tyler: Yes, there it is! Good read about how a Jack White song came to dominate the sporting tune landscape. I'm just glad Blur's "Song 2" has gone the way of the dodo.

    [Comment from Paul]
A note on football/US football chanting: Why does it seem like the Europeans picked up chanting "Seven Nation Army" before US college football teams playing it incessantly. I remember hearing the chant at the last Euros, far before it became popular in US sporting events.

  •

    [Comment from Mar]
    Wigan in the house!

  •

Roger Bennett: Going to be a fascinating second half... Holland will up the ante with Huntelaar, VDV, Cruyff etc. Denmark will tire... there will be goals. my big octopus-esque prediction: VDV comes on and ties this thing up

  •

James Tyler: Never count them out, David Higgins. But an early goal is needed. Have to crack Agger's back and unsettle Andersen more than they have thus far. Danes doing just enough.

  •

    [Comment from Brian]
If Denmark can hold on to this lead, how do you think it'll affect the dynamic of this group? Would the Portuguese then be the team to advance along with the Germans?

  •

  •

Roger Bennett: fabulous first half of football. No goals for the Dutch. On bright side, no monkey chants either

  •

    [Comment from Daniel]
The Dutch have got to be going in wondering how in the heck they're losing this.

  •

James Tyler: @jbk -- I was devastated. I blogged about it, typing through teary eyes.
    http://espn.go.com/sports/soccer/blog/_/name/tyler_james/id/8003621/farewell-dirk-kuyt-anfield-cult-hero-james-tyler

  •

Ravi Ubha: Great half for Denmark. Star man so far for me: Danish LB Simon Poulsen, the AZ man.

  •

    [Comment from jbk]
@james - as a liverpool fan, are you sad to see kuyt leave?

  •

Jason York: Denmark is 4-0-4 when leading at half at EURO; The Netherlands is 1-4-3 when trailing at half at EURO

  •

James Tyler: And that's your half... plenty of industry for the Netherlands but lacking in final product. The Danes had one great chance and buried it. GROUP OF DEATH, GROUP OF DEATH

  •

Jason York: Only one of Netherlands' 14 attempts on goal have been on target so far, 3 of Denmark's 5 efforts have been on target.

  •

James Tyler: ONE MINUTE OF ADDED TIME

  •

James Tyler: Corner for Denmark, Agger misses his header but Bendtner's shot is woeful. Stekelenburg was unsighted and would have struggled had the shot had a bit more power to it.

  •

James Tyler: As a Liverpool fan, I can sympathize with profligacy in the attacking third.

  •

James Tyler: All mocking aside, the Oranje have bags of time left. The front four is linking well. Just their shooting boots are malfunctioning.

  •

    James Tyler: "Huntelaar... Huntelaar... Huntelaar..."

  •

    [Comment from Chase]
The Dutch have to lead the tournament in forearm tattoos....

  •

Ravi Ubha: Yes, we know about his tendency to get the ball to his left foot, but van Persie should have hit it first time on his right.

  •

    [Comment from Rory]
    Robben, a young Patrick Stewart?

  •

James Tyler: As I type that... CHANCE FOR THE NETHERLANDS! Van Persie is onside after a good knockdown for Robben, but his touch is poor and he can't get a good shot on Andersen. Ball breaks back for Sneijder at the top of the box but he wellies it over.

  •

James Tyler: 42nd minute and the Dutch seem consumed by their own nerves. The ebullience of the first 20 minutes replaced by hesitancy.

  •

James Tyler: good shot by Krohn-Dehli but his low shot is smothered by Stekelenburg.

  •

Roger Bennett: Barton was the kind of kid who would wait to beat us up on the bus home. Not in the face. Not in the face

  •

James Tyler: No -- he went to Merchant Taylors. #LiverpoolJoke

  •

    [Comment from Guest]
did barton happen to go to the same school as you two?

  •

James Tyler: CHANCE FOR DENMARK! A lovely floated cross from the right has the Dutch defense ball-watching. Cue Niki Zimling, who ran onto it and tried to smack it on the full volley, but he didn't catch it and the ball is cleared. Should have left it for goalscorer Krohn-Dehli, who was also nearby.

  •

Roger Bennett: Aaron. Great question. Bendtner's ego has looked very good in training. Gets on really well with the rest of the lads too. A real plus for club house chemistry. It is just Bendtner that is the problem.

  •

James Tyler: Jonathan: I try to avoid Joey Barton wherever possible. Does wonders for ones health.

  •

You guys catch Joey Barton's twitter rant this morning? The man might be insane, but he wasn't entirely wrong.

  •

    [Comment from Aaron]
Rog, friend of the pod here, what are the odds of Bendtner's Ego causing an own goal at some point this game?

  •

Ravi Ubha: From our angle, looked like that one was headed into the top corner.

  •

James Tyler: CHANCE FOR THE DUTCH! And more lovely play from Afellay -- he's been a bright spot thus far -- to jink his way to the top of the box though his right-footed blast is narrowly over the bar. Did well to embarrass Agger on his run though.

  •

James Tyler: Eight minutes until Half-Time and the Dutch, save for Robben's post-crunching left-footed curler, have not broken Danish resolve.

  •

Jason York: POST has made one cameo each for Russia and Holland thus far in the tournament.

  •

James Tyler: Crunching foul on Bendtner not long after Agger takes a shot at RvP. Testy stuff in this Group of Death.

  •

    Ravi Ubha: Wave breaking out.

  •

James Tyler: As for Best U-21 midfielder, give me Gotze or give me death.

  •

James Tyler: All good shouts for breakout Euro stars...

  •

I sense great things from CROSSBAR in this tournament.

  •

    [Comment from Eric]
Best U-21 midfielder? Eriksen, Goetze, Wilshere, or someone else?

  •

    [Comment from Rex]
    woodwork 1 Robben-0

  •

James Tyler: Silly by Andersen to play it right to Robben like that, but Arjen's had the worst month ever.

  •

Ravi Ubha: Shoots when he should have passed and passed when he should have shot. Robben unsteady.

  •

Roger Bennett: Own Goal is in Group D James. We won't see him until Monday...

  •

James Tyler: POST, of course, along with OWN GOAL who has yet to emerge yet.

  •

James Tyler: The Dutch hit the post!

  •

Roger Bennett: POST steps up! one of our five young players to watch.

  •

Ravi Ubha: Interesting that the Dutch fans have gone quiet, as my Dutch friend bring up - with a sour look on his face.

  •

James Tyler: Not at all, Chris. It's the honest truth that Roger & I attended the same school, albeit at different times. It is the smallest of worlds sometimes.

  •

Jason York: Scoring chances: NED 8; DEN 1

  •

    [Comment from Chris]
not sure if your taking a knock at american education, or education in general...

    Here's to Seigfreid Sassoon!

  •

Roger Bennett: Nick. no such thing in our day, but now i believe Sir Ian Darke has recorded a 12 part educational video series. Must-see stuff

  •

James Tyler: Ha, so true Roger. I can also recite Prime Ministers pre-Churchill and pick out a mean conker for after-school battle.

  •

Roger Bennett: Tyler. amazing that we know anything other than World War One poetry and how to dissect a frog.

  •

    [Comment from Nick Christie (GFOP)]
At Liverpool high schools, is there a special class after first period where you learn how to pronounce "controversy" ? There is isn't there?

  •

James Tyler: Eric: Huntelaar's been no wallflower this year either. You just wonder how it might benefit to have two amazing strikers in play at once.

  •

    [Comment from Eric]
Honestly, what is with this love for Huntelaar... Do people realize how many goals RVP scored this year?!

  •

James Tyler: Same as you, Roger.

  •

Roger Bennett: Tyler, what high school did you go to?

  •

James Tyler: Longer than that, Guest.

  •

    [Comment from Guest]
What are the odds on Nigel de Jong scoring a goal at some point in this tourny? I'd say 100-1.

  •

James Tyler: Not really, Robert. I'm a born-and-raised Liverpool fan. We'll see Spurs there!

  •

    [Comment from Robert]
Is JT upset because the Spurs are in the Europa league or something?

  •

    [Comment from JamesTylerESPN via Twitter]
I hear the crowd. They're murmuring: "Huntelaar."

  •

Jason York: In Euro history, Netherlands have come from behind to win on just 2 of 12 occasions, losing 7 of these 12 games.

  •

    [Comment from Miley]
    Bring in Huntelaar

  •

    James Tyler: They're jokes, Gunner.

  •

    [Comment from gunner]
JamesT, why all the sly hate against Arsenal?

  •

    [Comment from Eric]
Seriously how scary is this group of death..?

  •

    [Comment from bill]
so which one is Loras Tyrell, then?

  •

James Tyler: Cat is among the pigeons now as Afellay is getting treatment on the sidelines for a neck knock.

Happy for Denmark. Coach Morten Olsen is one of my favorite men in football. Looks like the kind of guy who could heal sick Smurfs

  •

James Tyler: I did note that in the preamble, Chris. Not having Mathijsen is a concern.

  •

  •

  •

Ravi Ubha: Olsen off his bench barking out orders. Can't like what he's seen so far.

  •

James Tyler: Better known as the "Arsenal Method."

  •

    [Comment from Jeff]
Holland playing the "let's look pretty, but not score," method

  •

James Tyler: Some lovely Dutch tiki-taka on the left flank. All very mellifluous and easy on the eye.

  •

James Tyler: Corner for the Dutch but Andersen leaps to grab.

  •

Roger Bennett: Nick. I like that notion. Dodgy Flapper as an autonomous lifeforce. Holland playing with 12 men...

  •

    [Comment from Bryan]
Denmark appears to be employing the "They're better than us!" tactic.

  •

    [Comment from Nick Christie (GFOP)]
The Dodgy Flapper is like a king cobra... swaying and hypnotizing while Robben eyes where to strike, i.e. to the left.

  •

James Tyler: More attacks for the Dutch but nothing past Andersen. Robben links well with RvP and the Bayern man gallops on goal, but his cross is steered into Andersen's arms by the Danish defender. The Oranje claim back-pass, but not even Howard Webb would give that to Sir Alex at Old Trafford.

  •

Roger Bennett: Robben passing when he can shoot. Things I did not think i would see in my lifetime

  •

Roger Bennett: Mike. my head just exploded

  •

    [Comment from Mike]
Crazier running motion: Tom Cruise's tomahawk chop or Robben's dodgy flapper?

  •

    [Comment from Eric]
Yup there's the same move Robben tried all day against Chelsea....

  •

Jason York: Seven shots for the Dutch so far from an average of 20.1 yards.

  •

James Tyler: Free-kick for the Danes on the left flank as Robben nips at Simon Poulsen's ankle.

  •

Roger Bennett: is there an international defender who DOES NOT know that Robben's OM is to cut inside from the left. Michael Davies calls it like watching a fish with a dodgy flapper. They know it is coming. Yet they cannot stop him

  •

James Tyler: Shot for Robben is smothered by Andersen in net.

  •

Jason York: Euro Record When Scoring/Allowing 1st goal (W-L-T)

    Netherlands
    Scoring First: 5-1-0
    Conceding First: 2-6-3

    Denmark
    Scoring First: 5-0-4
    Conceding First: 1-12-0

  •

Ravi Ubha: Dutch unable to break down Denmark -- after 13 minutes. Let's see how long that can last.

  •

James Tyler: Van Bommel takes his turn to larrup a long-ranger into the crowd. Target practice for the Oranje thus far.

  •

    [Comment from Will]
Went with the John Terry free kick technique

  •

James Tyler: Sneijder runs over it and RvP sidefoots it into the wall. The Danes don't clear and the Netherlands break again but RvP can't get a cross in.

  •

James Tyler: Two Oranje maestros lingering on the free-kick...

  •

James Tyler: Free kick to the Dutch as van Persie is chopped down en route to goal. He's looking lively early on, as has Afellay.

  •

James Tyler: Mina: Stekelenburg is undisputed No. 1. Krul is comfortably ensconced on the bench though. Gets a nice bit of travel out of the deal.

  •

    [Comment from mina34]
where's krul? is he getting stiffed because he plays for the french magpies?

  •

James Tyler: Holland largely leading the battle of territory. Another good chance for the Dutch as van Persie angles a good cross over but Sneijder can't direct a header on target.

  •

Roger Bennett: Holland hope Afellay will do for their left flank what he has already done for Wet Hair Gel

  •

James Tyler: Another chance for the Oranje but Afellay curls his right-footed shot over the bar. He did well to cut infield from the left. Some nifty footwork too, but to no avail.

  •

James Tyler: And Eriksen lumps it into the wall. Breathe.

  •

James Tyler: Nine minutes gone and a flock of Danes hover over the set-piece.

  •

Ravi Ubha: The Dutch football guy grabbed my shoulder as van Persie lined up to shoot. He expected better.

  •

James Tyler: Denmark's turn for some jazzy interplay and they win a free-kick in a decent spot as Ron Vlaar lunges in and does to Nicklas Bendtner what many irate Arsenal fans wish they could do.

  •

Roger Bennett: Vlaar clearly been training with Jonny Heitinga

  •

    [Comment from Paul]
Nasty. Thuggish. Crude. Life of Nigel de Jong, who could be banned from football.

  •

    [Comment from Paul]
Sepp Blatter in a landslide. He's a negative "player" alright, off the pitch.

  •

Roger Bennett: Huntelaar drum starts beating softly

  •

James Tyler: CHANCE FOR HOLLAND! Van Persie slashes wide from the edge of the box. SHould have done better following good work by Sneijder down the left. Cue immediate camera pan to Huntelaar on the bench. Indeed.

  •

Roger Bennett: I miss Thomas Gravesen. And Stig Tofting. Denmark less delightful without those two bona fide nutjobs at the heart of everything good or bad...

  •

Ravi Ubha: Bang on cue van Bommel makes his presence felt. But FK against the Danes.

  •

    [Comment from Andrew]

  •

  •

Jason York: Jetro Willems becomes the youngest player to play at a the Euros at 18 yrs & 72 days, beating Enzo Scifo (18 yrs & 115 days). The previous youngest Dutchman was Patrick Kluivert (19 yrs & 345d) in 1996 vs Scotland.

  •

James Tyler: Nice play by the Dutch down the left, the cross is overhit but van Persie does well to keep it in play though Afellay's volley is wide.

  •

    Roger Bennett: Beckham

  •

James Tyler: Just changed my mind. Pepe, Pepe, Pepe, Pepe and Pepe.

  •

    [Comment from GreatGooglyMoogly]

if there were 5 players that could be banned from football, who would you pick

  •

    [Comment from Chris Crush!]
    Just a little under it

  •

James Tyler: First real sortie upfield for the Dutch and they've a throw-in in the right corner. Worked infield nicely to Jetro Willems who uncorks a tension-releasing strike from 30 yards but it's over the bar.

  •

Roger Bennett: vast area behind the denmark goal is apparently mined

  •

Jason York: The Netherlands have made it out of the group stages in their last six appearances at the Euros, the only side to have done this.

  •

James Tyler: Free-kick for Denmark and Agger nods it goalward where Stekelenburg dives to save. Half-chance, that.

  •

    [Comment from Dwyane Wade Boggs]
Terrified. Excited. Nervous. Pumped. Life of a Holland fan.

  •

James Tyler: And we're off... and Nigel de Jong is immediately crunching his opposite man. What a vortex of creativity he can be.

  •

Jason York: The Netherlands' Klaas Jan-Huntelaar was the top scorer in Euro 2012 Qualifying, bagging 12 goals from 25 shots. He's on the substitutes' bench.

  •

James Tyler: Indeed, Will. Great track. And so funny that it's not a universal footy warm-up song.

Roger Bennett: James Tyler. 3 words on danish menace: Lars Von Trier.

  •

    [Comment from Nick Christie (GFOP)]
Dutch Anthem makes me want to pop in A Bridge Too Far

  •

Ravi Ubha: Hey, Rog, you should go to Ottawa and do the Rideau Canal.

  •

James Tyler: Big cheer from the Kharkiv crowd, many of whom are wearing a day-glo tangerine.

  •

Jason York: Denmark scored 15 goals in qualifying, the second fewest of all the finalists behind Greece (14) and level with the Czech Republic and France.

The Netherlands scored 37 goals during the qualifiers; more than any other side.

  •

James Tyler: Makes me want to watch rugby for some reason.

  •

Roger Bennett: Dutch anthem makes me want to skating on a frozen river

  •

James Tyler: ANTHEM WATCH: Dutch love their choral stylings. Feels very uplifting.

  •

James Tyler: Do the Danes have much menace, Rog? I think I missed that in the CIA Factbook.

  •

Roger Bennett: Danish anthem. bleak. austere. menace lies just below the surface

  •

James Tyler: ANTHEM WATCH: Denmark's is orchestral and serene but lacking in bite.

  •

Roger Bennett: ADRIAN HEALEY with the call -- love that gent. both for his football knowledge and his love of gothic rock. used to manage a band called Children on Stun

  •

    James Tyler: True.

    [Comment from Sven]
True or false: Today we get to see the European Champion play.

  •

James Tyler: Not until an hour before kickoff, Steve.

  •

    [Comment from Steve]
Any word on the german starting side yet?

  •

    James Tyler: Morning, Roger!

  •

Roger Bennett: Hello gents. Excited for this one. Hilarious from an English fans perspective to hear Dutch complain about having "too much talent." But Sneijder, RVP, Huntelaar, Robben, VDV all used to have teams emphasize their threat and the Dutch are forced to prioritize which is tactically hard and from an ego perspective, even harder. Which is why i LOVE international football

  •

James Tyler: Ha! Definitely the worst month for him; track back even further from the CL Final and he missed a crucial PK against Dortmund that cost Bayern a shot at the Bundesliga, and then he was poor in the German Cup final against BvB again. That said, he loves to play with a chip on his shoulder...

  •

Ravi Ubha: He's on the bench, so fit enough to be there. Good news for Denmark is that Niki Zimling is fit after his scare yesterday.

  •

Jason York: Denmark have only won six of 28 previous internationals against the Netherlands, and haven't beaten the Dutch in a competitive game (excluding penalties) since 1967.

  •

    [Comment from Frank Lampard]
Any chance Robben is still mentally affected by the loss in Munich? Bet he's not the designated penalty taker...

  •

James Tyler: Lot of pressure on him, Guest. And not just about the football; the racist chants at training have caused plenty of tension and angst in the Dutch camp.

  •

    [Comment from Guest]
You seen van Marwijks presser yesterday? Seemed pretty tense

  •

James Tyler: Was Strootman still carrying a slight knock, Ravi? I recall he had been 50/50 in training.

  •

Ravi Ubha: A sea of orange right across from me.

  •

Ravi Ubha: Interesting that van Marwijk stuck with de Jong and didn't go with Kevin Strootman. Loud roars of 'Holland, Holland...'

  •

James Tyler: Ravi, how's the weather in Kharkiv?

  •

James Tyler: Me too, Tottbot. Funny that Bruce brought him in yet did nothing with him. Hindsight's 20/20 I guess.

  •

    [Comment from TottBot]
I like McClean as a breakout player. I was happy to see him get a chance to strut his stuff under Oneill this season.

  •

James Tyler: RvP because he leads the line.

  •

    [Comment from Will]
Is Huntelaar or RvP a better pick for a fantasy striker?

  •

James Tyler: 12 p.m. ET, Edwin!

  •

  •

James Tyler: Very true, Canyonhawk. It's BizarroGooners week!

  •

    [Comment from Alex]
Hi Jason! I expect some top quality stats today.

  •

James Tyler: I really rate Willems, Ravi. Highly-touted defender

  •

Ravi Ubha: A real statement of intent by Marwijk by leaving out Kuyt in favor of the more attacking Afellay. Wonder if Jetro Willems will be nervy at left back. Youngest player to play at the Euros.

  •

James Tyler: Schwab: Kuyt will do anything asked and do it for 95 minutes

  •

    [Comment from schwab]
i dont see how you could play kuyt instead of de jong with getting more disjointed

  •

    [Comment from Skyler]
Looks like a pretty good pick in Dzagoev

  •

James Tyler: @DutchChamps: not a bad shout.

  •

Jason York: Hello everyone, Jason York from ESPN Stats and Information here.

  •

    [Comment from DutchChamps]
If I was Bert Van Marwijk I would take De Jong out, and put in Dirk Kuyt, and sub Van Persie with Huntelaar in the 60th minute, dont you guys thinkso too?

  •

James Tyler: Also, underdog team to watch: I still rate Poland.

  •

Ravi Ubha: No complaining about the seats here. About six rows back. Sitting beside a friendly member of the Danish football federation.

  •

  •

    James Tyler: Morning, Ravi!

  •

Ravi Ubha: Hi, James, and hi, everyone, from Kharkiv.
Wonderful day. The daytime heat has subsided a little.

  •

    [Comment from Stan]
Mr. Tyler, who do you see having a break out performance in the Euros this year, as well as an underdog team that you can see moving on.

  •

James Tyler: Maybe, maybe not, TottBot. I sense from your name that you were a big fan of VdV's season for Spurs; that said, he showed even in the Prem that he struggles to do a full 90 and remain dangerous. Good sub option. Like I said earlier, these are good problems for the Dutch to have.

  •

    [Comment from TottBot]
Not playing Van der Vaart: A mistake

  •

James Tyler: Perhaps, Schwab. Neither is particularly dynamic, and I dislike the twin deployment of such reductive, scrappy midfielders. But that's modern soccer for you. Defense first. Should the Danes repel the Dutch front four, I'd reckon we see one of them off for Huntelaar and a formation shift.

  •

    [Comment from schwab]
do you think the use of de jong with van bommel could cause the netherlands defense to become disconnected from its attack?

  •

    [Comment from Guest]
Bendtner is gonna run WILD against Holland today!

  •

    [Comment from Jayanth]
OOOO AFELLAY! Big game for him tonight!

  •

James Tyler: For the Danes, about as settled as could be. Niki Zimling shrugged off his training ground injury from yesterday and will anchor the midfield.

  •

James Tyler: A 4-2-3-1 for both teams. Afellay getting the nod. Very lively wide threat but has labored since his Barcelona move. Shows van Marwijk's confidence. Lone striker means the Bundesliga's leading scorer in 2011-12, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, rides the pine.

  •

James Tyler: Holland: Stekelenburg; Van der Wiel, Heitinga, Vlaar, Willems; Van Bommel, N De Jong; Robben, Sneijder, Afellay; Van Persie.
Subs: Vorm, Mathijsen, Bouma, Kuyt, Huntelaar, Schaars, Strootman, Luuk De Jong, Narsingh, Boulahrouz, Van der Vaart, Krul.

Denmark: Andersen, Jacobsen, Kjaer, Agger, Simon Poulsen; Kvist, Zimling; Rommedahl, Eriksen, Krohn-Delhi; Bendtner.
Subs: Lindegaard, Christian Poulsen, Bjelland, Okore, Schone, Silberbauer, Pedersen, Wass, Jakob Poulsen, Kahlenberg, Mikkelsen, Schmeichel.

    Referee: Damir Skomina (Slovenia)

  •

    James Tyler: TEAM NEWS!

  •

James Tyler: Absolutely, Kristian. See, the fixtures have been kind to the Dutch; play arguably the easiest opponent first in Group B and let the other two big dogs slug it out (and hopefully beat each other up). A win today puts them in the catbird seat.

  •

    [Comment from Kristian]
I have Germany or Portugal. Whoever wins tonight's game I like their chances

  •

James Tyler: Man, you take away the best two... I'm a huge Lucas Leiva fan. Make of that what you will.

  •

    [Comment from Bill]
Mr. Tyler, if you could take any player outside of Messi or Neymar from outside the Euros and put them on your team, who would you pick?

  •

    [Comment from TottBot]
The Dutchmen will prevail for sure. I fancy them to win the whole thing.

  •

James Tyler: Group A's first results tell me that anything is possible here. I'll wager on a draw. Agger and Kjaer at CB are well-versed in top-flight European soccer.

  •

James Tyler: Normally you'd say not likely, but we saw what heavily unfavored Greece managed against a lively Poland side playing at home.

  •

    [Comment from Kristian]
How likely is Denmark to steal points from this match?

  •

James Tyler: I'd say very well, Stan. Eriksen more than holds his own in the Eredivisie at present and looked decent in Champions League play last season. The Van Bommel role will be pivotal in shutting him down, but I'd say he can hold the old man off.

  •

    [Comment from Stan]
How do you think Eriksen will hold up against the likes of Van Bommel and Sneijder?

  •

James Tyler: There's also the lingering nastiness of reported racist chants at the Dutch training camp. Latest is that the Dutch team has not filed an official report to UEFA at this time. Van Bommel and Van Marwijk are trying to keep the focus on game prep, from what I can tell.

James Tyler: David, I'd wager that their defense needs to be at its sharpest. Mathijsen was scratched from the lineup yesterday. Also, Sneijder's a no-brainer, but the interplay between him and Robben is crucial in serving RvP or Huntelaar up top. Tons of questions, but good questions to have.

James - who, in your opinion, is the most important player for the Netherlands that has to play well for them to advance?

  •

James Tyler: Will furnish XIs as soon as I have them verified.

  •

James Tyler: Blake, as the de facto President of the Dirk Kuyt Unofficial Fan Club, I truly hope he's a major factor.

Good Morning! Will we see any of Dirk Kuyt?

  •

James Tyler: Morning, all! You can indeed watch the game with us on the chat, but ESPN will have the game also. Then there's ESPN3, and ESPNRadio.com also.

Is this the place to watch the game?

    Good morning James Tyler!

  •

James Tyler: James Tyler here, a few others set to join, and we're prepping busily for Netherlands v. Denmark.

  •

    James Tyler: Good morning, Kharkiv!
