  •

Chris Jones: Get some work done in the meantime.

  •

Chris Jones: We'll see tonight for Spain-Honduras, 2 o'clock Eastern.

  •

Chris Jones: There we go -- a nice way to finish. Thanks Sean, and thanks all of you.

  •

    [Comment from Sean]
Even though you don't post my comments I still love you Chris. Leander too, I guess.

  •

Chris Jones: We live in the future!

  •

Chris Jones: Leander and I really enjoy Cover It Live, and we hope you all do, too.

  •

Chris Jones: A little note on comments before we go: Some of you get frustrated when we don't post your comments. Please understand that we get thousands -- during U.S. games, we get more than 100 a minute. They come in a narrow string on the right-hand side of our screen. We try to post as many as we can, but it's hard. We appreciate all of you watching with us.

  •

    [Comment from is this football?]
    Who scored Portugal's Touchdown?

  •

    Chris Jones: That was ridiculous.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Portugal did what it needed to do. And a little more.

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: Game over.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Portugal with a spot of danger.

  •

ESPN Stats and Info: Up date from earlier: Now, 12 of Portugal's 39 (30.7%) World Cup finals goals have come against North Korea and 12 of the 18 (66.7%) goals allowed by North Korea in the World Cup have been to Portugal.

  •

Chris Jones: I certainly wasn't expecting anything like this. 2-0 maybe. 3-1. 7-0? Wow.

  •

    [Comment from Goalie1009]
There should be no extra time. If there were, that would prove the referee is a sadist.

  •

Chris Jones: Ivory Coast is now effectively out, unless they beat NK by nearly as much, and Brazil pounds Portugal.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Two minutes of extra time.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: In honesty, if Portugal had been more efficient with its chances it could have been 10-0.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: A few bad shots in the box by Portugal.

  •

Chris Jones: I'm actually seriously worried about these North Koreans when they go home. Brazil was a brave result. This is unreal.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Nice header from a cross.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Tiago with a goal!

  •

ESPN Stats and Info: Not to be forgotten with all these goals: The Portuguese have conceded just two goals in their last 10 internationals.

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: Complete annihilation.

  •

    Chris Jones: Holy jeez.

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: 7-0!

  •

Chris Jones: Ronaldo looks like a guy who has spun the roulette wheel 1,000 times and finally hit. You can see the relief in his shoulders.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: He broke through,  flipped the ball of onrushing Keeper, it rolled onto his back, bounced off his head, he had no idea where it was, and then it fell in front of his feet and he kicked it into the empty net.

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: 6-0.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Veloso blasts a ball over. Then Ronaldo scores on a rather amusing play.

  •

    [Comment from Hepstyle]
I agree with benching Onyewu. He's been three steps behind all tournament. But depth on defense is scary for the US.

  •

    [Comment from Mat]
For starters, they can learn to mark the overlapping runs. All too often the midfielders are slow to get back. This contributes greatly to the U.S.'s inability to defend the counter attack.

  •

Chris Jones: Believe me, Daniel, I would love the U.S. to advance, for many reasons, including selfish ones. We get better tickets for the U.S. games.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: I honestly think that benching Onyewu should at least be discussed. Move Bocanegra into the center and play Spector on the left. Yes, he was bad there for West Ham but he's a lot better than Bornstein.

Either that or play Goodson. Risky at this level, but he's looked good.

  •

    [Comment from guest]
What can the US do to improve their defense?

  •

    [Comment from Daniel]
While I agree with Chris, the US is a team that can get hot. I know too much is probably made of the Confed Cup, but they started poorly there and then got hot and made a good run

  •

    [Comment from Paul]
I agree completely Chris, the US defense has underperformed thus far.

  •

    [Comment from Sean in ATL]
Chris, I hate to admit it, but every point you made was accurate.

  •

    [Comment from Ringo]
You're right though, Chris. The defense - particularly Onyewu, has been horrific.

  •

    Chris Jones: Vindication!

  •

ESPN Stats and Info: The only other time Portugal scored five goals in a World Cup Match was against North Korea in 1966

  •

    [Comment from Emily]
I totally agree with you there Chris...and I am from the US

  •

    [Comment from Emma]
As much as I hate to say it Chris, I agree with you.

  •

    [Comment from Nick]
Agreed Chris. Unless they get hot - this wont be a very long run for the US

  •

Chris Jones: Sorry, went on a rant there.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Terrible miss-kick on a clearance by Ri after which Liedson can whack it home.

  •

Chris Jones: Look, here are the facts: The U.S. gave up a weak goal against England, and then got lucky to tie it on Robert Green's error. Then, they gave up two early goals again against Slovenia, a country with the population.

The Americans were totally, totally robbed of the win by the ref, but that doesn't erase how bad the defense has played. The U.S. is not a guarantee against Algeria. And if they do win the group, they've won one of the weakest groups. I'll be impressed if they advance past the Round of 16.

  •

    [Comment from Jesse]
People like Chris will never give the US respect even if they win the World Cup

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: Cheering, joy, etc.

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: Liedson grabs one.

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: 5-0.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: First factor, obviously, is points. Then it's goals, then goals scored, then results among the teams and, finally, a draw.

  •

    [Comment from Ladimir]
If there were a three way tie in the groups, what is the deciding factor for who moves on?

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Nice chance for North Korea but the shot bounced and was scooped up by Eduardo.

  •

    [Comment from English Fan]
This is really embarrassing. I am just looking for a toilet.

  •

Chris Jones: They both advance, Tiff. Two from each group.

  •

    [Comment from Tiffany]
If the US and England both win, who advances?

  •

Chris Jones: Ben, they were down 2-0, through no fault of the ref's. That came later.

  •

    [Comment from Ben]
Do you really think the U.S. has messed up though Chris? Granted we have to play better in the early minutes but I've been overall happy and impressed with their performance

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Almeida off for Liedson.

  •

ESPN Stats and Info: 9 of Portugal's 36 (25%) World Cup finals goals have come against North Korea. On the flip side, 9 of the 15 (60%) goals allowed by North Korea in the World Cup have been to Portugal.

  •

    [Comment from Your Name]
Chris, more like a wizard named Rooney. A spell cast with a boot wand 4 years ago.

  •

Chris Jones: Ghana has a legitimate chance, and maybe, maybe Algeria, depending on how much England and the U.S. mess up.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Cha Jong Hyok off for Nam Song Chol.

  •

Chris Jones: Africa is in very bad shape as a whole.

  •

    [Comment from Jordan]
Ivory Coast is going to need a miracle to advance.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Portugal might get a bit more defensive here, to save their goal difference, which they might need badly in the last round of games.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Simao off for Duda.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Almost 8-0. Ronaldo was on the run in the right, but his shot was right at Keeper.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Still 4-0 though, somehow.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Inches from what should have been 7-0.

  •

Chris Jones: Ronaldo has clearly suffered some kind of witch's curse.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: A long swerving kick by Ronaldo hits the upper right corner of the crossbar.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Actually, looking at the replay. I still don't know why. He went up with a defender a defender and the defender fell on his own.

  •

Chris Jones: Meireles out for Veloso.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Hugo Almeida gets a yellow card. I'm not sure why because Brewski was telling me that Jong Tae-se apparently gave up a pro career as a snowboarder to play soccer.

  •

Chris Jones: Portugal has committed 15 fouls... And 20 shots.

  •

Chris Jones: I think you're looking at the North Korean feed, Chad... They have two yellow cards alone.

  •

    [Comment from Chad]
Chris - is the Match Stats correct - does North Korea only have 1 foul???

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Chris, what have you done?

  •

    [Comment from Mario]
Chris i just want to see my name in the comment box

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: A good ball from Ronaldo put him one-on-one with Keeper, who saw it pass by his goal.

  •

Chris Jones: Yeah, but Hungary hit double digits, so it was more awesome.

  •

    [Comment from Mervis]
Hungary beat Korea 9-0 in 1954 and Yugoslavia beat Zaire 9-0 in 1974. Both equally as large as Hungary's win.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Coentrao should have made it 6-0. As it stands, it remains 4-0.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Jong Tae-se's face is scratched by some very high Portuguese cleat.

  •

    Chris Jones: Shawn.

  •

    [Comment from Shawn]
Chris i just want to see my name in the comment box

  •

Chris Jones: So, folks, now that this game is totally out of hand... Brazil-Portugal looks to be a barnburner.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Good shot by the Koreans, but the kept rsising and went over.

  •

Chris Jones: That's in a qualifier, not in the World Cup itself.

  •

    [Comment from Torsten]
The Biggest Win Was Spain against Malta sorry

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Should probably have done better.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Meireles got a great cross from Ronaldo but finished wide.

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: Yup.

  •

    [Comment from Stoney]
    His name is really Brewski?

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: That's all John Brewin goes by.

  •

    [Comment from The Dude]
    Brewski, what a great name

  •

    [Comment from Hungary]
I think my record may be in trouble in just this half of football

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: I'd like to be able to say I just knew that, but it was Brewski, editor of the British Soccernet that knew.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: The biggest World Cup win ever was a 10-1 win by Hungary against El Salvador in 1982.

  •

    [Comment from Brick Tamland]
    LOUD NOISES!!!!!!!!!

  •

Chris Jones: Well, Jim, it's when the ball goes into the net, the way Portugal has scored four today. Or it's a long-term aim or target in your life, such as, "One day I'd like to have a big boy bed."

  •

    [Comment from Jim]
    Chris, what is a goal?

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Nice ball by Crissy.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Ronaldo played it off to Tiago who again found himself way in front of any defenders and slipped it past poor Keeper.

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: 4-0...

  •

    [Comment from Kim Jong il]
    imcomprehensible yelling

  •

Chris Jones: Portugal suddenly looks very good... As good as Germany did against Australia, that is.

  •

    [Comment from Fat Lady]
What the?! OK...I'll come back out for an encore...LALALA!

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: It was lovely, if you will.

  •

Chris Jones: I like questions like these. It's important to educate to grow the game. Rob -- because the clock doesn't stop in soccer, the officials estimate how much time was taken up by injuries and add it to the end of the game.

  •

    [Comment from Rob]
Where does extra time come from?

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Coentrao had been played into space nicely.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Almeida had all the space in the world.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Almeida headed home easily on a great cross from Coentrao.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: And then North Korea was the team we feared it would be coming into the tournament. 3-0.

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: GOAL!!!

  •

Chris Jones: I'm a big fan of ZANG!

  •

    [Comment from Seth]
Chris, Leander, what is your favorite interjection (e.g. Wow!, Pow!, Bam!)?

  •

Chris Jones: Keeper's so tall, between his legs was probably the easiest shot.

  •

Chris Jones: That was a very good goal.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: It was Meireles with the assist.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: He got the ball in space on the right from ... we'll tell you that when we see the replay ... and slotted it between Keeper's legs.

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: Simao!

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: GOAL!!!

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Got in front of his man and everything.

  •

Chris Jones: Cross from Coentrao, hit wide by Almeida... Should have done better.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Jong Tae-se gets a shot off which goes through a poor wall and makes it to the near corner, where Eduardo's hands awaited.

  •

    [Comment from bob]
Leander, I can see why you missed Chris during your solo games a couple days ago, instead of 1 witty remark per comment you get almost 3

  •

    [Comment from Chris\' Wife]
    Take him Sara.

  •

    [Comment from Sara\'s Wife]
Why are you acting like a woman again John?

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Fine, one will be Keeper and the other two Defender Ri and Defender Ra.

  •

    [Comment from Cooper]
Leander, there's three guys on Korea with Ri in their name. I don't want to have to guess if you mean the keeper.

  •

Chris Jones: Hate goalkeepers much, Leander? Jeez.

  •

Chris Jones: Rain coming into play there, I think.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: First-class fumble that was.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Terribly goalkeeping by Ri, who released the ball twice on a long shot from Ronaldo and almost let Almeida get to it.

  •

Chris Jones: Ronaldo skies a shot from outside the box.

  •

    [Comment from Sara\'s Husband]
WHAT is going on here? Sara, what is this?

  •

Chris Jones: Twice, Neal. You've made it twice.

  •

    [Comment from Neal]
Its okay, I've been here for every one of Leander and Chris' casts, and only made it once.

  •

    [Comment from Greg]
Sara's really a 30 year old bald dude

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: Poor touch.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Hong gets a shot off, rolls to Eduardo.

  •

Chris Jones: Ronaldo actually made a move there that looked like a salsa step.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Tiago gets a shot off from the edge of the box, slipping past Ri  but the goalkeeper flipped it over his bar.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: There's a game happening here! Who knew!

  •

    [Comment from Jack]
Well, Sara, how bout you marry me?

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: I can drink and type!

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: I'm posting!

  •

    [Comment from Sid]
I want Leander back...tell him to stop taking his halftime whiskey shots and get back here

  •

Chris Jones: How many have you written, Keith?

  •

    [Comment from Keith]
I wonder how many comments i will have to write before i make it on the board

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Or wherever you work.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: You're welcome Proctor & Gamble.

  •

    [Comment from Julia]
You guys have ruined my work productivity

  •

Chris Jones: I actually don't, Real Chris Jones. I think Slovenia beats them. England is in total disarray, and that game against Algeria... Woof.

  •

[Comment from The Real Chris Jones]
Other Chris, do you see England advancing?

  •

    [Comment from Sara]
    Fine, ronaldo is cuter anyways.

  •

Chris Jones: You want a sandwich?

  •

    [Comment from Banachek]
Chris, so what am I thinking?

  •

    Chris Jones: you're*

  •

    [Comment from Chris Jones]
Note to self: Post question before answering it

  •

Chris Jones: Not till your 18, Sara.

  •

    [Comment from Sara]
    Chris, wil you marry me?

  •

Chris Jones: Drew Carey is here. The Price is Right is awesome.

  •

    [Comment from Mike]
Have you guys seen any celebs over there at the games?

  •

Chris Jones: That was magic. I predicted not only the question, but who would ask it.

  •

    [Comment from Jesse]
Chris, what do you think are the chances of the U.S. actually taking care of business against Algeria?

  •

Chris Jones: They should be able to do it, Jesse, but Algeria's not a walkover. The big question remains the American D. They can't give up an early goal to Algeria, or they'll have the discipline to shut the whole game down.

  •

    Chris Jones: Thanks Dad.

  •

    [Comment from Anti Jones]
you are a loser chris I hate life.

  •

Chris Jones: I ask myself this all the time... Oh wait, you're talking about the Avril thing, right?

  •

    [Comment from Craig]
    Does it matter Chris?

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: It was a disappointing game, especially the first half.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Most definitely. Terrible refereeing. Tiote should have been sent off at least three times.

  •

Chris Jones: That one, too, Chris.

  •

    [Comment from Martin]
Leander, what did you think of the Brazil game? Did you not think some red cards should have been given for those dangerous plays?

  •

    [Comment from Chris]
What about Robbie Findley's poor card that has him suspended for the Algeria game? Nothing wrong with that one, just an awful ref.

  •

Chris Jones: It is a mugshot.

  •

    [Comment from Archer]
Chris your ESPN pic looks lke a mugshot

  •

Chris Jones: And yes, we'll be doing the US-Algeria game.

  •

Chris Jones: Tomboy Avril, or new, girly Avril?

  •

    [Comment from CRR]
Chirs, who would win in a fight: Avril or Justin?

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: Tell you.

  •

    [Comment from Concerned Cubical Serf]
Please tell me that you guys will be gamecasting the US-Algeria game on Wednesday!??!!

  •

Chris Jones: They also have "chicken mayo" sandwiches, which is like chicken salad but way wetter.

  •

Chris Jones: scalz1, there's braai, which is BBQ... Wimpy's, the hamburger joint... but mostly I've been eating meat pies. My heart hurts.

  •

Chris Jones: We were just talking about that Greg... We think it wouldn't be a bad idea for FIFA to negate unwarranted suspensions. Kaka's would definitely be part of that.

  •

    [Comment from scalz1]
Chris, Leander, is there such a thing as South African cuisine? and, if so, what does it consist of?

  •

    [Comment from Greg]
Is FIFA going to look at that terrible red card by Kaka? The guy literally walked into him and then held his face...

  •

Chris Jones: Pro, quality time spent with Avril Lavigne. Con, quality time spent with Justin Bieber.

  •

    [Comment from @work in westchester]
So Chris what is it like writing for Teen People

  •

Chris Jones: Thanks for the plug, Leander. That might be the best thing I've ever written.

  •

Chris Jones: That was actually a pretty fun half of soccer despite the rain, tattoos, 80s music, and constitutionals. Portugal with a distinct advantage, but as they did against Brazil, North Korea is hanging in tough. Like Donnie.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: For more on North Korea's uniforms, I refer you to Jones's blog item here.

  •

Chris Jones: James, our unpaid intern. Thanks James.

  •

    [Comment from James]
Clip of Nigerian goal for those who care: http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=5297316

  •

Chris Jones: Halftime. Portugal 1-North Korea 0

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: It's an Italian brand, that had nice designs ready to go for North Korea, which apparently decided to go with the lame uniforms instead.

  •

Chris Jones: Who said anything about eyes?

  •

    [Comment from Kipa]
"Finely toned"? Um, Chris, eyes on the game please

  •

    [Comment from TJ]
Anyone know anything about this brand Legea that PRK is in?

  •

Chris Jones: Alexander is actually my middle name. Not sure where Archibald came from.

  •

    [Comment from Brad]
    Chris Alexander the Great Jones

  •

    [Comment from Kipa]
I disagree. Doesn't get much more distinguished than Jones.

  •

    [Comment from Dave in NC]
Chris, I could have gone without that visual all day, thanks.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Unlike when he chased after Paris Hilton.

  •

    Chris Jones: No call.

  •

Chris Jones: Ronaldo now sitting on his finely toned hindquarters.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Ronaldo chased after it but nothing came of it.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: His name isn't really Archibald. But I figure an Esquire writer should have at least one distinguished name, and Chris, whose middle name is Alexander, has none.

  •

Chris Jones: Simao nice cross, not missed by much.

  •

    [Comment from @work in westchester]
Archibald haha thats almost as bad as Leander

  •

    [Comment from That Guy]
I'm looking forward to a Honduran upset

  •

Chris Jones: Sleep for a week. And then Gamecast my morning constitutional.

  •

    [Comment from Captain Planet]
Leander, Chris: what are you going to do after the WC is over?

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Christopher Archibald Jones and myself will be at Ellis Park tonight for Spain-Honduras.

  •

Chris Jones: Ah, there we go. Thanks James. We're all right!

  •

    [Comment from James]
Well, there was, Chris. It was just disallowed by a blind ref. :P

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Ronaldo's shot goes through the legs of an opponent but wide.

  •

    [Comment from Josh A]
Leander are you going to be here for the next game? I really hope so

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Portugal is looking stronger this last spell.

  •

    [Comment from Josh]
Change in Carvalho's overall appearance: not much.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Coentrado, also tattooed, goes on a long run down the left flank, wins a corner and sees it go to waste.

  •

Chris Jones: I can't remember the Nigerian goal... Damn statistics handed to us are wrong then. Not for the first time.

  •

    [Comment from free kicker]
actually Nigeria scored a free kick goal

  •

Chris Jones: Carvalho blocked that free kick with his face.

  •

Chris Jones: Eduardo handles a light shot.

  •

    Chris Jones: Into the wall.

  •

Chris Jones: No goals from a free kick in this World Cup so far.

  •

    Chris Jones: Late challenge there.

  •

Chris Jones: Free kick for NK just outside the box. Threatening position here. Yellow to Pedro Mendes.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Thanks. That's the pick-me-up I needed in this rain.

  •

    [Comment from Goalie1009]
Don't be so hard on yourself Leander - writers are awesome

  •

Chris Jones: If Portugal wins, they would need either to tie against Brazil in their last, or have NK beat the Ivory Coast. But yes, a tie against Brazil combined with a win today would allow them to advance.

  •

    [Comment from sickmantz]
if portugal wins today, all they have to do is draw the last match to advance, right?

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: It was well wide.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Meireles gets another big chance but he doesn't finish anywhere near as well this time around.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Awesome movie. Little long. But very funny. I love Russell Brand's stuff.

  •

    [Comment from That Guy]
What about "African Child" by Aldous Snow?

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Let's be honest, Bob. I write for a living. Is there anything less manly than thinking of pretty words all day.

And I like Shish Kabob, so I'm quite flattered by that name.

  •

Chris Jones: Me, that is. Take me away.

  •

Chris Jones: Nothing's ever gonna take away from you, darrelltx.

  •

    [Comment from darrelltx]
I missed the rains there, Chris.

  •

    [Comment from bob]
I think mike hurt Leander Schiskabob's feelings

  •

Chris Jones: Funnily enough, despite all the crappy 80s music I've heard here, I've not heard the awesome "Africa" by Toto.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: I don't think it's like a video game, where you get to chose how to alter your biological makeup. In Meireles's case, it was clearly an accuracy injection though.

  •

    [Comment from Greg]
Do the tatoos give you more power or better accuracy on your shot?

  •

Chris Jones: Mike gives me my first LOL.

  •

    [Comment from mike]
Leander's last comment couldn't get less manly

  •

    [Comment from Toto]
I bless the rains down in Africa

  •

    [Comment from GerstenKickers]
Go Portugal!!!! Only 1 more goal needed for my fantasy league!!

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: He was fed a lovely ball past his man and finished it cleanly.

  •

Chris Jones: Meireles is heavily tattooed, Leander... He looks like the Travis Barker from blink-182.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Meireles kisses his tattoos, which undoubtedly gave him the strength to accomplish this.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Raul Meireles cut past several men and slotted it home.

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: GOAL!!!

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Good call galore, as usual.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Nice play by the Chong. He was called for offside but it wasn't, and there's an argument for calling a penalty there!

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: No he will not. He already has one and a second would mean a suspension.

  •

    [Comment from ETH]
If Ronaldo gets another yellow card will he be able to play next game>?

  •

    [Comment from darrelltx]
Can't blame Leander for his cynicism--Slovenians cried wolf often enough.

  •

Chris Jones: So far, pretty clean. He might not want to get muddy.

  •

    [Comment from Scott]
What's the over/under on how many times CR hits the turf today?

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Simao got on the end of a nice cross but was blocked by Ri Chong.

  •

    [Comment from abe from atlanta]
back to my cubodial after enjoying WC on TV on saturday and sunday

  •

    [Comment from Goalie1009]
This game is being played on a slip-n-slide, not grass.

  •

    Chris Jones: Cameroon disagrees.

  •

    [Comment from Bob]
Everyone knows that the worst team in the World Cup is Greece.

  •

    [Comment from dre]
chris jones fan club bows down to leanders last names fan club alone!

  •

Chris Jones: Best Springsteen record though.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Yeah, I felt bad about that when I heard. I did apologize for saying that.

  •

Chris Jones: You could have ended that sentence, "I'm in Nebraska."

  •

    [Comment from Tom]
To Leander- So remember the at the end of the U.S. game you made a comment about the Slovenian writhing in pain after a Dempsey collision at midfield and how he was faking his injury.... well he broke his ankle..

  •

    [Comment from Nathaniel]
I'm in Nebraska it's not even 7am and we have a thunderstorm. So things can get worse.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Long shot by Jong who cut in well is just a yard or two wide.

  •

Chris Jones: This could turn into a high-scoring game. Lots of chances early on.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: I think he should. He's a seriously solid attacker. He'd do well for relegation-threatened Premier League teams, as he's used to playing while being outnumbered up front and on the counter.

  •

Chris Jones: Another long Meireles shot doesn't miss by much.

  •

Chris Jones: Portuguese corner easily rebuffed. But a very good cross was just wasted.

  •

    [Comment from FER]
Do you think that Jong Tae-se could jump to europe?

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: We've said it before and we'll say it again. North Korea is not at all a bad team. I wouldn't at all be surprised if they didn't finish last in their group, as they were guaranteed by many to do.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Shot just off the Portuguese goal by An.

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: Sorry - Brittishism.

  •

Chris Jones: No, I just don't know anything about soccer so I banter. I think Portugal will win in today's fourth quarter by two rouges and a try.

  •

    [Comment from Baborski]
Do the other commentators choose not to interact with the plebs like you two great gents?

  •

    [Comment from Kevin]
    Cracking game?

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: I have nothing to say to that, other than thank you.

  •

    [Comment from french trainer]
leander i love your espn.com photo pure beauty

  •

Chris Jones: Driving, solid rain, yes.

  •

    [Comment from Lon Thomas]
How bad is the rain? You can't tell on television. Is is a driving, solid rain?

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Yay, indeed. He has cometh... on the noon shuttle to the IBC.

  •

Chris Jones: I think they already have.

  •

    [Comment from scalz1]
Chris, Leander, any word as to if the French will surrender?

  •

    [Comment from Baborski]
    Yay Leander is here

  •

    [Comment from Tim]
If I wasn't at work, I would be hard pressed to follow this game...

  •

Chris Jones: I'm pretty sure that makes me completely illegitimate, Chris.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: It's bucketing, and the Portuguese have already blown a fat chance and hit the post, while allowing the North Koreans (the Koreans from here on after) to break out dangerously on several occasions.

  •

    [Comment from Chris]
Yay!! Leander and Chris are here. We get legit commentary AND entertainment :D

  •

Chris Jones: Lousy weather in Cape Town, Dave. Cold and pouring rain.

  •

    [Comment from Dave in NC]
We heard the weather isn't great for this game today. Since the evil tech gods have blocked streaming, I can see. Is the weather less than optimal?

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: This is looking like a cracking game right here.

  •

    [Comment from scalz1]
    Technical difficulties = Leander sleeping

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: I'd say the latter, Gary.

  •

    [Comment from Gary]
So far, do you think the gap has been closed by the smaller nations or have the powerhouses just have not been playing up to par?

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: He also goes by this.

  •

    [Comment from Greg]
    Who is leander alphabets?

  •

    Chris Jones: Believe, Bob. Believe.

  •

    [Comment from bob]
    is anybody...out there?

  •

Chris Jones: Lots of end to end action in this game so far.

  •

Chris Jones: Jong might have had a break there, but missed it in the box.

  •

Chris Jones: Ronaldo just faced three NKs in the box. A wall in front of him.

  •

Chris Jones: NK impressed me during the game against Brazil... Much better than expected.

  •

    [Comment from @work in westchester]
    come on North Korea

  •

Chris Jones: He managed to hold it mostly together for the anthems this time.

  •

Chris Jones: Jong misses on a long free kick for NK.

  •

Chris Jones: We're in the 12th minute -- again, apologies for not starting on time.

  •

Chris Jones: Cha just narrowly missed for NK.

  •

Chris Jones: It's raining in Cape Town. Portugal has a crossbar to their credit, but no score as of yet.

  •

Chris Jones: I'm Chris Jones, soon to be joined by Leander Alphabets for Portugal - North Korea.

  •

Chris Jones: Sorry we're late everybody -- technical difficulties.
