Leander Schaerlaeckens: On behalf of Chris, Luke, Jeff and Jemele, I bid you a good night. And I hope you still manage to enjoy the rest of your day. I'm glad the day is almost over here.

  •

Luke Cyphers: Like I said, the Yanks never make it easy. On themselves, the opponents, or the press.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Well, folks. This one was depressing, then exhilarating and then deflating. Still, almost certain elimination was avoided.

  •

Chris Jones: I'm Canadian, and even I need to go for a walk to blow off steam.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: But you're still dependent on other outcomes, which isn't ideal.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Not an altogether bad outlook, if I've done my math right.

  •

    Luke Cyphers: I hate math.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Basically, the U.S. now has two points. Slovenia has four. England and Algeria play their second game tonight. They have one and zero respectively. The U.S. will have a final game against Algeria. Assuming England wins tonight and gets to four points. The U.S. will have to beat Algeria and hope Slovenia loses. If Slovenia ties England it will come down to the tiebreakers between the three. If Slovenia beats England, the U.S. is also through and England is out.

  •

    [Comment from Edward]
Amazing comeback. I'll be on the edge of my seat for the next game...

  •

    [Comment from ]
Why the heartbreak. A loss (and essential elimination from the Cup) would have been a heartbreak. This comeback to tie kept us in it!

  •

    Luke Cyphers: On to Algeria.

  •

    [Comment from Slovenia]
Thank you fans. I'll be right back. I've got ot go thank the refs now.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: It was an amazing game of soccer. What a shame a terrible call has to ruin it.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Both teams are going over to thank their fans.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: The U.S. can still make it out of its group, but those two extra points sure would have come in handy.

  •

    [Comment from from the bbc]
"Ive been looking through the replay and not only do I see no foul commited but I see two fouls commited by slovenia"

  •

Chris Jones: I'm seriously at a loss here. That might have been one of the all-time great games, and instead, totally blown.

  •

    [Comment from Ron Burgundy]
    Stay classy Slovenia

  •

Luke Cyphers: Crazy match. A lot like US-Italy in 2006.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Worst refereeing I've seen in a long while.

  •

    [Comment from Sean]
i've never felt so deflated after a great comeback

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Absolutely heartbreaking for the U.S.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Landon Donovan man of the match.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: An impossible comeback nipped in the bud by poor refereeing.

  •

Luke Cyphers: Jesse Marsch covers Michael Bradley's mouth, literally, because MB's complaining about giving more time after the injury.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Heartbreak for the U.S. here.

  •

Chris Jones: Gee, not much to talk about after that game... Great googily moogily.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: U.S. furious that the time for the injury wasn't added on!

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: Game!

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Pecnik might really be hurt, actually. Apologies.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Andrej Komac on for Pecnik.

  •

Chris Jones: They did score Andrew. Goal was disallowed. I've watched it ten times and can't figure out why.

  •

    [Comment from Andrew]
Chris would they have scored on that offsides call?

  •

    [Comment from Optimism]
Come on, there's still time to get another goal waived off.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Slovenian, of course, what else, shocker, needs to go off on a stretcher.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: He tripped on the ball, to be fair.

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: No call.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Plays it to Dempsey who collides with an opponent.

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: Bradley wins it.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: The U.S. on the defensive here. They really do have to be careful here.

  •

Chris Jones: I'm still not over that call. I've missed the last five minutes.

  •

Luke Cyphers: Ladies and gentlemen, Jemele Hill.

  •

JemeleHill: After that game, I bet Joe Barton will call criticism of the officials unfair

  •

Luke Cyphers: Flag was up, anyway

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Three minutes of extra time. Gomez's shot goes wide and over.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Howard is screaming at Edu to get forward.

  •

Chris Jones: I still can't believe that call was for an offside. Had to be holding or something. It wasn't even close.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Cleared from the U.S. box.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Unbelievably poor refereeing here. I'm still not over it. I don't imagine anybody is.

  •

Luke Cyphers: US has to be careful not to overrun in pursuit and give up a game winner.

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: Fine save.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Slovenia with a long kick but Howard punches it away.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Dedic on the run now.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: The U.S. might be cheated out of two points here.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: A looooong kick from Howard finds Altidore in the box, but he can't control it.

  •

    [Comment from conspiracy?]
they have to be paid off, this is incredible

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Nocakovic heads it on goal, but Howard has it.

  •

    Chris Jones: Wow, that's horrendous.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: An awful, awful offside call.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: It was an offside call.

  •

    [Comment from Pahokee]
    This ref work for BP?

  •

Chris Jones: Was it offside, or a foul in the box? Because if that was an offside call... I can't believe that was an offside call.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Dempsey clears a Slovenian cross.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Dedic on for Birsa for Slovenia.

  •

JemeleHill: I wouldn't have made that call -- Signed, Jim Joyce

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: It was a sweet finish, followed by a faulty offside called.

  •

    Chris Jones: Absolutely robbed.

  •

Luke Cyphers: Mo Edu all over it.

  •

Chris Jones: Terrible call. Terrible terrible terrible call.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Which it quite blatantly wasn't in the replay!!!

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Edu called for offsides!!!

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: Ruled out!

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: No!

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: GOAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Every American man, woman and child in the box, just about.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Free kick at the edge of the box. Donovan to take it.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Falls to Gomez, who feeds Jozy who is knocked down.

  •

ESPN Stats and Info: The last United States goal at the World Cup after the 75th minute was Landon Donovan v. Poland in the group stage in 2002.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Howard with a long goal kick.

  •

    [Comment from Constantine]
The whole team is going out for pizza after the game now.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Nobody minds the cold anymore.

  •

    [Comment from George]
Score one for nepotism and America.

  •

    [Comment from JW]
I just pulled by bicep on that fist-pump.

  •

Luke Cyphers: Stadium really loud now, with USA chants, not horns.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: A draw the U.S. can work with. A win and things are looking rosy.

  •

    [Comment from Bob Bradley]
    Good job son

  •

    [Comment from Michael Bradley]
47th floor get back in here!

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Can the U.S. finish this off?

  •

JemeleHill: That gigantic thud was America hopping back on the bandwagon

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Eight minutes of regular time left.

  •

    [Comment from Fat Lady]
    Maybe I spoke too soon?

  •

Luke Cyphers: By the way, Altidore's been working his butt off.

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: We're playing again.

  •

    [Comment from Josh]
Everyone in the office is wondering why I ripped my shirt off.

  •

    [Comment from tim]
Yes, but if more Americans took an interest, the talent pool would naturally... GOAL!

  •

Luke Cyphers: Jozy posts up and delivers a great ball

  •

    [Comment from Billy]
Dear Santa, I don't want anything more for Christmas, thank you.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Cherundolo sent a long ball, Altidore headed it on and Bradley toed it into the nets!!!

  •

    [Comment from Net Boy 44]
    And the fans rejoice!

  •

    [Comment from Mike]
    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  •

    Chris Jones: Holy moly.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: The U.S. goes nuts!!!

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: BRADLEY, BRADLEY, BRADLEY, BRADLEY!!!

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: BRADLEY!!!

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: GOAL!!!

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Cherundolo gets elbowed in the chin by Pecnik. Just a foul, no card.

  •

    JemeleHill: "The Hand"

  •

    [Comment from Mike]
No Eduardo, it's more likely the lack of talent

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: Good try.

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: Saved.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Bradley with a long shot!

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: 3-4-3 the U.S. is playing in now.

  •

Luke Cyphers: US going three in the back.

  •

    [Comment from Eduardo]
Thats why the USA will never win a world cup...great attitude from every american

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Onyewu is off for Gomez.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Slovenians are starting to take their sweet time.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Herculez Gomez is getting ready to come on.

  •

    [Comment from Bob Bradley]
It's the white rectangle.. put it INSIDE

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Pecnik loses the ball fair and square and throws his arms up at the impressionable ref. No call though.

  •

    [Comment from Every American]
12 minutes until I ignore soccer for another 4 years

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Feilhaber advanced on goal but didn't shoot. His through ball was blocked.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Kirm one-on-one with Cherundolo sends a cross but DeMerit clears it.

  •

    [Comment from Joe Namath]
    ...

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Altidore sends a shot wide.

  •

Luke Cyphers: Edu's playing well. A good sub.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: A Slovenian pushed Bocanegra in the back and then flopped over. The ref didn't see it.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: The U.S. recovers it.

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: Slovenia away.

  •

Chris Jones: Too much on target, Chicago. A couple of shots right at Handanovic.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Donovan loses it at the edge of the box.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: This game is getting scrappier by the second.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Edu is fouled in the American half.

  •

    [Comment from Chicago]
I'm seeing a lot of "Shot On Target" on my screen. Is it just superior goaltending or poor offensive strikes?

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: It does it automatically, Andrew. Otherwise this play-by-play would be a hell of a lot slower.

  •

Luke Cyphers: US much better taking away the counter this half. Though it was hard to be worse.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Long free kick by Cherundolo can't be turned into a shot by Dempsey at the second post.

  •

    [Comment from Andrew Romero]
Do you have "Leander Schaerlaeckens" on Ctrl C as well??

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: 45,000 fans and change here.

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: Yellow to Jokic.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Dononvan meanwhile has been whacked.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Dempsey gets a shot off on a long free throw and Bradley is inches short to tap it in. Free kick called against the U.S. for some reason though. The U.S. complain bitterly at this ref.

  •

    [Comment from US Players]
    Yes, why thank you, Eric.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Now I can take "Ljubijanic" off my Ctrl+C.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Ljubijanic off for Nejc Pecnik.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Then again, it should have been 11 against 10 by now.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: The U.S. is the dominant team at the moment. But they're just not converting chances.

  •

    [Comment from Niceville Bob]
Less than 20 minutes to save US Soccer

  •

Luke Cyphers: Benny goes for what I believe the Germans call a volltreffer.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: His free kick meets Feilhaber at the end of the box, but his flick-on is harmless.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Kirm gets a yellow for clipping Cherundolo on the ankle long after the ball was gone.

  •

    [Comment from Eric]
US Players, just to make you aware, you have less then 20 minutes left.

  •

    [Comment from Kipa]
Bob Bradley just checked his watch

  •

    Luke Cyphers: Aaaaiiiiiirrr Ballllll

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: Luke?

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Slovenia now deep in American territory. Ljubijanic with the cross...

  •

Luke Cyphers: Great turn by Altidore. Just right at Handanovic.

  •

JemeleHill: Altidore got off a bullet, too.

  •

    [Comment from NBA Refs]
    We now do soccer matches!

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: It's blocked, falls to Altidore but his shot is right at Handanovic.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Donovan with the free kick at the edge of the box.

  •

    [Comment from Obi Wan]
These are not the Slovenians you are looking for...

  •

JemeleHill: Hey, I think I see Tim Donaghy down there

  •

    [Comment from CJ Roberts]
    WHERE'S THE RED???????

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: He's been bad.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: The U.S. will have every right to feel aggrieved with this ref's performance.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: That should have been a red.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Marko Suler gets away with it there!

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: Only a yellow!

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Altidore is brough down on the run to the ball!

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: The U.S. on the break.

  •

Luke Cyphers: One of those days where the US has a heavy touch.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: The U.S. building an attack here, after Altidore finally won a high ball. But Onyewu's long ball goes nowhere helpful.

  •

Chris Jones: Yes, I will post this comment.

  •

    [Comment from Obi Wan]
"Chris you will post this comment" - (with hand wave)

  •

Chris Jones: Must... resist... another... joke...

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: This game is so up-and-down my neck is starting to hurt.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: A ball into the American box is cleared.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Feilhaber plays a ball over the ground into the box but there's nobody there to run onto it.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Koren's bad ball is intercepted by Edu. The U.S. got on the break but had to slow it down. Still in possession.

  •

    [Comment from Joe B.]
    "Something clever"

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: A cross by Jokic is picked off by Howard.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Another tussle meanwhile between Altidore and Suler. Again the call is against the U.S.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: I hear that too.

  •

Chris Jones: Buzz here in Cape Town is that Calamity James will replace Robert Green in goal tonight... Should be a very interesting game against Algeria.

  •

    Luke Cyphers: Aaaiiiir Baaaalllll

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Koren's chip into the box goes over Novakovic's head.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: DeMerit gets his head to a long ball and concedes a throw-in.

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: Howard punches it.

  •

    [Comment from Ethel]
Don't worry Lucy I got this one

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Free kick on the side to Slovenia now. Some danger.

  •

    [Comment from phrase finisher]

  •

    [Comment from james malm]
    like a worm?

  •

Chris Jones: Yellow card to Leander Schaerlaeckens.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: I can't finish that.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Kirm squirmed like a...

  •

JemeleHill: The Slovenian team must all take drama classes, because every time they are touched, they act as if they were beaten with a sledgehammer

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: This ref is not doing it for me.

  •

Luke Cyphers: Slovenian soccer players feel pain more than most people.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Could have gone either way.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: He and Dempsey, caught in a righteous tussle, both went down.

  •

ESPN Stats and Info: This World Cup has had the lowest crossing accuracy since the stat was first tracked in 1966. This year's accuracy is just 19.3%, the previous low was 20.3% in 1970.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Boos raining down in Kirm.

  •

Chris Jones: Trying to keep up with comments... Like Lucy at the chocolate factory.

  •

    [Comment from Jeff F.]
Chris Jones has been quite for a while....could he be getting hot chocolate?

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Foul called on the U.S.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Will swing it in.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Donovan with a long free kick now.

  •

Luke Cyphers: US winning long balls now.

  •

JemeleHill: I'd say that takedown of Altidore was, ahem, overlooked

  •

    [Comment from NH man]
Slovenia beat Russia to qualify, so they have inherited the rivalry

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Altidore on the run at the edge of the box, is knocked down but no whistle!

  •

ESPN Stats and Info: Donovan (2002, 2010) becomes the 3rd American to score in 2 world cups (McBride 1998, 2002) and Dempsey (2006, 2010).

  •

Luke Cyphers: With all the too-long passes and shots, I think it's time soccer fans learn the Aaaiiiiir Baaaalll chant.

  •

    [Comment from 1980 hockey team]
Yup Beating Slovenia is the same as the Russian hockey team.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Dempsey on the run, but his through ball was blocked. Donovan's back ball is intercepted but the run by Kirm is blocked off by Cherundolo.

  •

Luke Cyphers: DeMerit doing work. Back line looks steadier so far this half.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: This is an up-and-down game under a beautiful pink South African sky. Entertainment of the highest order.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: DeMerit does well to get a tackle in on the Slovenian left wing.

  •

    [Comment from Lake Placid]
Miracle on grass - phase 1

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Bocanegra gets past his man on the byline and sends in a long cross, but Donovan was marked well.

  •

    [Comment from 46th Floor]
The Slovenian Embassy is on this floor, please leave....

  •

Luke Cyphers: Edu loses ball but US recovers nicely.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Danger averted after yet another cross sails over.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: As I type that, Slovenia breaks away.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: If this U.S. is going to turn this around, it will have to strike while Slovenia is scrambling here.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Dempsey headed it onto Altidore, but it was too far ahead of him.

  •

    [Comment from Jin]
Everyone in the 47th floor can now move down to the 46th floor.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Played out but shot way over.

  •

    [Comment from Kristofer]
Just when I thought I was out... they pull me back in.

    [Comment from Fat Lady]

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Howard barely gets to it, with a few Slovenians behind him.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Long free kick for Slovenia now.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: The U.S. looks rejuvenated after that very refreshing goal.

  •

    [Comment from Fat Lady]
I seem to have a frog in my throat...

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Gooch almost gets to it at the far post!

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: OH!

  •

Chris Jones: Or the former Yugoslavia...

  •

    [Comment from James]
Just like the former USSR to collapse

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Donovan behind a long free kick now.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: He just destroyed that ball. I'm surprised it didn't tear through the net of the top of the goal, quite frankly.

  •

[Comment from Nail in the coffin]
    I'm a little loose

  •

    [Comment from Andy]
See! I told you we could do this. 1 more goal to draw even, beat Algeria, and we're through

  •

ESPN Stats and Info: Slovenia conceded only 6 goals in their 12 qualifiers

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Well, the Second Miracle of Ellis Park?

  •

    [Comment from Adam]
Donovan aimed right at the keeper's face. No way he was stopping that.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: The Miracle of... Ellis Park?

  •

    [Comment from Matt]
wow, Fed Ex must have been late in delivering the heart. glad to see it showed

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: On the other end Howard, has to tackle it away from a Slovenian trying to get onto a long ball.

  •

    [Comment from Eric]
    GAME ON!

  •

    [Comment from YES!]
    Close that window!

  •

    [Comment from Barret]
If this holds, the US should technically have zero point off zero goals.

  •

Luke Cyphers: Cover your damn head!

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Donovan made it through on the right after a ball skipped past Jokic, went into the box all alone, found nobody to play it and jut decided to blast it past the flinching Handanovic!

  •

Chris Jones: Handanovic looked like he hid behind the post rather than take that in the face.

  •

Luke Cyphers: That was a confident strike.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: It's a ballgame again.

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: USA!!!

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: GOAL!!!!!!!

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Slovenia trapped on its own half.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: The U.S. zipping it around now.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: I applaud that move. The U.S. needed another creative midfielder.

  •

    [Comment from james]
They'll be tearing it up in Ljubljana tonight, that's for sure!

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Feilhaber isn't defensive, Nando.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Slovenia tries to thread a ball through to an attacker but DeMerit gets to it and is fouled anyway.

  •

    [Comment from Nando]
2 defensive players. Just what we need.

  •

    [Comment from We stink]
at least the Celtics won last night...oh wait...

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Dempsey is now playing as a second striker.

  •

Luke Cyphers: Dempsey moves to forward

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Feilhaber and Edu on for Torres and Findley.

  •

    [Comment from Bob Bradley]
Had a nice chat with the boys at halftime. Reminded them there's this thing called "defense."

  •

    [Comment from Craig]
The US should pull a "Pronger" and steal the ball after the game.

  •

    [Comment from jerry]
singing and dancing to miley cyrus "party in the usa's defense"

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Slovenia to kick off the second half.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: U.S. huddle now, with Dononvan and Bocanegra, the captains trying to pump up the rest of the team.

  •

    [Comment from Dennis Miller]
Worst slaughter since the Slovene Peasant Revolt of 1515

  •

    [Comment from Balki Bartokomous]
The celebration is called "The Dance of Joy"

  •

    [Comment from HB]
The significance of the Slovenian celebration is: "We're killing the US right now!!"

  •

    [Comment from Eric]
Jared, I believe they did the fork in the garbage disposal from the "yes dance." Youtube it.

  •

ESPN Stats and Info: The United States has the 5th and 6th worst passing accuracy in their oppositions half of this World Cup. The US completed just 58.8% of their passes in England's half and just 61.8% through the first half against Slovenia.

  •

    [Comment from Patrick]
I think they are singing and dancing to Hillary Duff

  •

    [Comment from Josh]
    Jersery Shore fist pump?

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Maybe they're trash-talking and saying they're "lights out"...

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: I think it's best described as turning out light bulbs and clumsily stomping your feet. It looks utterly stupid.

  •

    [Comment from Rob]
    "Fat Lady" wins the chat

  •

    [Comment from Jared]
Has anyone figured out the significance of the Slovenian Team's Goal Celebration?

  •

    [Comment from Mike]
This just in..."Stonehenge was just renamed after the U.S.'s Defense"

  •

    [Comment from Ron]
Hey Howard, the US Open does not refer to the state of the net.

  •

    [Comment from Fat Lady]
These vocal exercises have really helped me project my voice over the horns

  •

[Comment from Robert C/New York City]
My count: Seven US passes to . . . no one.

  •

Chris Jones: That Brecko play was terrific, Luke. Talk about a game-changer.

  •

Luke Cyphers: All week, US talked about importance of being patient and not getting caught on counters. And after first goal lapse, they got impatient and caught on a counter. The play Miso Brecko to break up Dempsey's pass to Donovan turned the half--and unless something drastic occurs, the match.

  •

    [Comment from priceboy]
if we beat Algeria, we'll be bowl-eligible.

  •

    [Comment from Jack Kavorkian]
    Does anybody need anything?

  •

    Chris Jones: Must... resist... joke...

  •

    [Comment from Erik]
Think Gooch looks a tad neutered out there?

  •

Chris Jones: There you go, Josh. U.S. is still losing to SLOVENIA, but your comment got posted. So, not too shabby, all in all.

  •

    [Comment from Josh]
One of these days, one of my witty comments is going to make it through.

  •

    [Comment from The Grim Reaper]
    I'm here to collect

    [Comment from joe]
    Looks like 2006

  •

    [Comment from Tim]
So they are good at scoring, we're good at kicking the bal off them out of bounds

  •

    [Comment from Leo Balla]
US has 0 offsides, which means they aren't atticking hard enough

  •

    [Comment from Hopeful]
I hope we get some good draft picks out of this.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Three Slovenian shots, two on goal. Four American shots, one on goal. Four American corners to one Slovenian one.

  •

    [Comment from kets23]
Does anyone know how to play taps on the vuvuzeela?!?!

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: A few stats: possession: 50/50

  •

    [Comment from Edson Buddle]
    PUT. ME. IN.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Two Americans are warming up. From up here it looks like they're either Feilhaber and Edu or Feilhaber and Buddle.

  •

Better hope they've got some epic orange slices and capri-suns

  •

    [Comment from OBAMA]
That's it. We're invading Slovenia tomorrow!

  •

Chris Jones: That comeback was so painful, Montenegro never played with Serbia again.

  •

    [Comment from schaabdl]
Normally teams visit the WH after winning - this team goes before. Must blame the WH on this obdebacle obviously.

  •

    [Comment from 1st Floor Jumper]
    Help me!

  •

ESPN Stats and Info: The last team to come back from two goals down to win was ivory coast vs serbia and montenegro in 2006

  •

    [Comment from Hyperbole]
    I'm doing very well today.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: There is a half left to play, but if you saw what is going, you'd see the glass as half empty too.

  •

    [Comment from David James]
    I'm America's biggest hope

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Findley went over to plead his case with the ref, who has impressed nobody, but is waved off.

  •

    [Comment from Ron]
You guys are all sort of "the glass is not half empty, it is in pieces on the floor" sort of guys aren't you?

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Oh dear. This is not looking good.

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: Half-time.

  •

    [Comment from George Washington]
I crossed the Potomac for you to blow a game against Slovenia?

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Findley has been very poor too. He just has bad instincts on what to do with the ball when he gets in a promising position. He seems scared to pull the trigger at this level.

  •

    [Comment from Jarred]
Looks like we al just became fans of Algeria.

  •

    [Comment from FAT LADY]
    Laaaaaaaaa.....

  •

[Comment from From the 47th Floor]
    (silence...empty room)

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Bradley hustles back well and wins the U.S. the ball.

  •

Chris Jones: This is the first time in my life I wished I was Slovenian. They must be feeling on top of the world.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Two minutes of extra time.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: This development may crash America as we know it.

  •

    [Comment from Mike]
How big is the window on the 47th floor...I'm coming up

  •

    [Comment from Darius]
This development has crashed facebook. Maybe it was being kept going by the 47th floor guy.

  •

    [Comment from Ryan]
Onyewu should have to play for free next year......oh wait

  •

    [Comment from ANOTHERHALF!]
    Another half is just cruel!

  •

    [Comment from Josh]
Well, there's always next, next, next, next, year

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Bradley is called for legitimately pushing his man off the ball.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: He's been caught in possession a few times.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Torres has not had a good half.

  •

    [Comment from Back to Work]
Now I have no reason not to work

  •

Luke Cyphers: Bocanegra tells mates to calm down after a turnover by Bradley.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Yep. looked like DeMerit sucked up field with Gooch back and they got carved apart.

  •

    [Comment from mj]
there is still another half..chill with the nail and the coffin

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Slovenia's coach is gesturing wildly. It looks like he's calling his entire team into defend.

  •

    [Comment from Micah]
    *Plays "Taps" on trumpet*

  •

Chris Jones: Yes, I remember it well, Ryan. And I'm totally embarrassed.

  •

    [Comment from Ryan]
I think you can recall your statement Chris

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: The U.S. players look aghast. As do their fans.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Just as the U.S. was so close to equalizing.

  •

[Comment from guy from 47th floor]
    splat!

  •

    [Comment from CJ]
47th floor guy, reopen your window

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: Calamitous developments.

  •

Chris Jones: Back four for the U.S. couldn't have been more badly hustled there. Terrible shape.

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: 2-0

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Onyewu kept a man on side who fed Ljubijankic who had only to slip it past Howard.

  •

JemeleHill: Ljubijankic with an excellent one-on-one play there for a goal. Snuck behind the defense.

  •

    [Comment from Steve M.]
    Jump now!

  •

    [Comment from Traska]
    Nail in the coffin.

  •

Luke Cyphers: US caught on the counter. Howard all alone.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Slovenia hit the U.S. on the break.

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: Slovenia!

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: GOAL!

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Findley got deep into the box but again played it off when he probably should have shot. There was nobody to hit it. A long shot by Cherundolo went wide.

  •

Chris Jones: Somebody save that guy from jumping off the 47th floor. Game is turning.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: The momentum is definitely with the U.S. now.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Short. Throw-in for the U.S.

  •

Chris Jones: Brecko with a clutch play at the line there. So cool.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: A great American attack sees Dempsey cross it past an empty goal, where nobody could connect with it. Another American corner.

  •

Luke Cyphers: What a defensive play.

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: ALMOST!!!

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: He took the ball to the face and the outstanding ref booked him for it.

  •

Chris Jones: FIndley out for the next match.

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: Why, nobody knows.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Findley gets a yellow!

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: A ball almost rolled in by the second post.

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: So close!!!

  •

Chris Jones: Steve has finally snapped.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: An American ball trickles through to Donovan on the left who plays Findley into space. But rather than shoot, he tries to connect with Altidore. Corner to the U.S.

  •

    [Comment from Steve]
agitation my increase dissolution mass transfer. No effect on solubility

  •

    [Comment from Jeff]
Somone in my office just said "the goodness of this is really good". I assume she wasn't talking about this team.

  •

    [Comment from Charles Barkley]
    Just turrible

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Sorry, Michael, it was DeMerit, whose elbow whacked Radosavljevic on his header.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: I think Slovenia just wanted a water break, although Radosavljevic did take a hit. from DeMerit.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Bradley was sighted in his vicinity.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Some Slovenian is down and looking not at his best.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: There's a kerfuffle of some sort in the box now.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: It was a lot more dangerous than it sounded.

  •

    [Comment from Charlie Brown]
I didn't know my shirts were available in green-white.

  •

JemeleHill: Nice played by "The Hand"

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: DeMerit's long header from the edge of the box is just wide!

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: Short.

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: Corner.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Tears it at the near post but Handanovic saves it with a stretch!!!

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: Torres behind it.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: That's more like from Jozy who has not been that impressive so far.

  •

JemeleHill: And it was a bad call

  •

    [Comment from Eddie]
Not only witty commentary but a chemistry lesson as well?? Awesome...

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Free kick on the right side of the box, almost at the top of it.

  •

Luke Cyphers: No connections on long balls from the back. But Altidore's run creates a chance.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Altidore is tackled trying to run into the box. Cesar gets a yellow.

  •

    [Comment from Esta]
Ed Bradley is getting agitated, Morley Safer too

  •

Chris Jones: Run, don't walk, to the hospital, Chris.

  •

    [Comment from Chris Mo]
Somebody just broke my vuvuzela :(

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: A long ball goes wide of Findley.

  •

    [Comment from scott m]
    solubility decreases saturation

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: And strikers are badly isolated, in spite of dropping back deep.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Chiefly, it is losing the battle in midfield.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: The U.S. is not managing to impose its will on Slovenia. It is trying to control play but not getting a handle on it.

  •

    [Comment from chris]
    agitation increases solulbility

  •

Luke Cyphers: Good track back by Dempsey slows down another Slovenian attack.

  •

    [Comment from Gavin]
Bob Bradley always looks agitated lol

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: A cross into the American box is preempted by an offside call.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Even Bob Bradley is now looking agitated.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Onyewyu heads a goal kick forward to Altidore but he can't control it.

  •

[Comment from US soccer Chicken Egg]
I was counted before I hatched

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: DeMerit's aerial dominance that the U.S. counts on so is not a given today.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: DeMerit misreads another high ball after which Onyewu has to bail him out and set off after it. Goal kick.

  •

JemeleHill: I think the South African fans have abandoned rooting for America

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Always a good sign...

  •

Luke Cyphers: Bradley and Findley hollering at each other after last Bradley long ball doesn't connect.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: The U.S. recovers it but Bradley's long ball goes nowhere but no man's land.

  •

Chris Jones: Hey Leander -- perhaps we should put the scoreboard up for these good people.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Birsa swings it into the box, it's headed on but nobody is there to finish. A long run from Howard saves a corner and turns it into a throw-in.

  •

Luke Cyphers: Dempsey's putting himself in good positions, but the US can't quite connect on the final pass.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Foul by DeMerit. Free kick from 35 yards for Slovenia.

  •

[Comment from Working on the 47th floor...]
    ...I just opened the window...

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: A nice attack by the U.S. saw Donovan put a cross into the box, but it was inches too high for Dempsey to do anything but head it on past the back line.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: A Slovenian got into the box but he was offside.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Howard clears it but Altidore can't get under it. To become a better target man, he'll really have to become more effective on high balls.

  •

    [Comment from cj]
U.S. gets the sportsmanship award for curteously conceding early goals

  •

    [Comment from Steve]
Somebody get to Staples and get the US an Easy button.

  •

Chris Jones: Cash in my pocket, Eliel.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Koren's cross sails over.

  •

    [Comment from Eliel]
How come you don't add my comments? Is there something I'm missing here?

  •

    [Comment from ryan]
chill out everyone...65 min to play

  •

    [Comment from Javier]
too soon to push the panic button, relax. Okay, now push it!

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Don't stop there. I'd say Bradley has been the best US player period.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Headed away by Bradley.

  •

    [Comment from Jarred]
No pressure from the US whatsoever. We can't even put a shot on goal right now.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: A good tackle by DeMerit on Ljubijankic, but he has to give up a corner.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Bradley, as usual, is looking like the best man in the U.S. midfield.

  •

    [Comment from Reid]
I am now pushing the panic button.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: A good tackle by Bradley wins the U.S. the ball. But neither Altidore or Findley can be reached in the box.

  •

    [Comment from Bryan]
Someone on Slovenia needs to kick Howard again so the US will wake up.

  •

    [Comment from Greg]
Did Slovenia pull their goalie? Seems like they dont need one...

  •

[Comment from Glad I didn\'t see]
All of the sudden being at work doesn't seem so bad

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: At the other end, Brecko storms past Bocanegra but a clever sliding from Donovan gets it off and wins a goal kick.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Bocanegra struggling with overlapping runs of Brecko. Donovan having to help a lot on defense.

  •

    [Comment from Freddy Adu]
First Serbia, now Slovenia. Underestimate former Yugoslavia at your peril!

  •

Luke Cyphers: Birsa's really hurting the U.S.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Donovan swings a ball into the box, but Dempsey can only head it up. The ball ping-pongs on but nobody can get to it.

  •

    [Comment from Blake]
wow that was actually a really good play by Howard

  •

JemeleHill: That ball looked like it could have taken a bizarre bounce. Kudos to Howard for staying in front of that

  •

Chris Jones: Howard did well not to get dummied there.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Kirm had gotten to a loose ball into the box, but Howard's safe hands (and ribs) were there.

  •

    [Comment from Lebron(NYC)]
It didn't look hopeful for Switzerland either, and you see what happened there.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Howard with a diving save!

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Bradley charges off with the ball, but Donovan had committed a foul.

  •

    [Comment from Ryan]
Leander .. 70 minutes, come on dude ..

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Onyewu on the other end, meanwhile, had a man breathing down his neck on a long goal kick and resorted to clearing it out the side.

  •

    [Comment from Dan]
Slovenia is the least populous nation in the World Cup, and is fielding their entire country for this match.

  •

ESPN Stats and Info: This is the 8th time the US has allowed a goal within the first 15 minutes of a World Cup match.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Donovan goes on a promising run but loses it when he goes for one too many defenders.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: If the U.S. loses this game, let me remind you, and England beats Algeria, the U.S. would need to beat Algeria and for England to lose to Slovenia in the final games just to have a chance to advance on goal difference...

  •

JemeleHill: With Sasha Vujacic making some clutch free throws last night to help the Lakers win a title, this could wind up being a nice 24-hour run for the Slovenians

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Slovenia isn't parking the bus, and playing for possession too.

  •

    [Comment from Kyle Butler]
If the US losses just blame the ball. Everyone's doing it.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: There's a lot of time left to play but this is not looking good, folks.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Goal kick for Howard at the other end.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Bounces short of Altidore and is cleared.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Donovan with a run on the left, plays it to Bocanegra who is tackled. U.S. throw-in.

  •

    [Comment from deBoer]
I hope Slovenia's goalie is as generous as England's.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: A long shot by Bradley saild over. Must have been a good 35 yards.

  •

Chris Jones: Other than horrendous marking, it was totally legitimate.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Findley does really well to get onto a clearance by Bocanegra by faking out his man and letting it bounce over him. He gets it into Altidore but he can't create space and loses it.

  •

    [Comment from Eddie]
Did Howards injury appear to have anything to do with it or was it a legitmate goal?

  •

JemeleHill: Well, if you want to be overly optimistic, the US didn't give up a goal until the 13th minute -- better than the 4th?

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Bocanegra was just under that free kick and Onyewu and Dempsey would have been there to sweep it in, had Handanovic not punched it.

  •

Luke Cyphers: Talk to the Handanovich!

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: It almost made it to several American heads but the goalkeeper punches it away.

  •

    [Comment from Ken]
Maybe it's a good thing I'm about to board a plane...

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: He'll swing it in and hope to find Cherundolo.

  •

    [Comment from Andrew]
This does not bode well, but we seem to play well coming from behind at least...

  •

    [Comment from Wolf]
    I feel phsycially sick.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: We're back underway. Onyewu tries a long ball at Altidore, who is fouled. Free kick for Dononvan from 25 yards and a 45-degree angle.

  •

    [Comment from Goalie1009]
Let's play catch-up again... and pray for another howler

  •

    [Comment from Kipa]
Can we press the "Reset" button on this game?

  •

ESPN Stats and Info: The US have not kept a clean sheet in any of their last 12 international games.

  •

Chris Jones: Howard didn't move his feet an inch. Just toast the moment that was shot.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Once again the U.S. concedes early.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: I'd say he had about 20 square meters to operate in. Unbelievable positioning lapse for the U.S. here.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: No one closed Birsa down as he found a pocket between the midfield and back line.

  •

Chris Jones: No chance for Howard there.

  •

    [Comment from Jed]
    Oh no...

If I could swear on here I would... I really really would

  •

    [Comment from Brom]
    [expletive deleted]

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Birsa got all the space in the world to lay the ball exactly where he wanted it and curl it past Howard's left.

  •

    JemeleHill: G.O.A.L

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: Slovenia!

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: GOAL!

  •

Luke Cyphers: Torres a bit tentative. Bradley has been sharp on the ball so far.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Altidore starts a good run from the half-way line and plays it through for Dempsey. But he clumsily loses it.

  •

    [Comment from KevH]
    Can we call a 20-second time-out?

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Torres is playing it back and forth between teammates at an excruciatingly slow pace before a through ball by Bocanegra goes where nobody is to run onto it.

  •

    [Comment from john]
not wobbly just needing to relax a little

  •

    [Comment from James]
Oh good. The US has gone back to its old long-ball habits.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Slovenia looking the better side at the moment.

  •

Chris Jones: This is one of those games that feels as though it could get seriously out of hand.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: A cross into the box by Slovenia is cleared with considerable trouble.

  •

Luke Cyphers: Gooch looking solid again.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: He then fouls an opponent and gets a little shove from Donovan.

  •

    [Comment from Mark]
American defense is wobbly as expected.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Findley manages to get onto a long ball by Bradley. But Torres loses it.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: The U.S. trying to hold possession, but Slovenia isn't nearly as defensive as I had expected.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Slovenia look like they have come to play. Not parking the bus in front of goal at all.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: That was the best chance yet.

  •

    [Comment from LeeMR]
Torres' presence on the ball is already obvious, he is so much better than ricardo clark.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Birsa swung a ball into Novakovic who had DeMerit beat and was inches short of a clear shot on Howard from 10 yards.

  •

Chris Jones: I'd rather not, Virginia.

  •

    [Comment from Stuck in Virginia]
You can use your head too, Chris.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Ljubijankic had it on the right but Torres won it back.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: DeMerit goes under a high ball. Donovan lets a bad cross by Slovenia go out for a throwin.

  •

JemeleHill: The Slovenian jerseys look like they have stolen the Charlie Brown design. I shall call them the Womp Womps

  •

Chris Jones: Howard is not afraid to really go at them. He must buy a lot of post-game beers.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: I think he was annoyed at Torres for conceding the free kick in the first place.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: U-S-A, U-S-A, roars the crowd to our right.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Howard is all kinds of annoyed at his defenders. Aching ribs or not.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: They swing it in but Ljubijankic heads it over.

  •

Chris Jones: It's really complicated. Put the ball in the net with your feet.

  •

    [Comment from Big JJJ]
One day I will understand this sport

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Torres concedes a free kick about 30 yards and near the sideline.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Most of the stadium is nicely filled up now.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Yeah, forget everything I said about the weather earlier on.

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: Goal kick.

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: Too short.

  •

Luke Cyphers: Bundesliga weather, Bundesliga play from MB.

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: Corner for Donovan.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Torres is already looking handy in midfield, winning the ball and playing it out.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Donovan on the run. Bradley picks it up and threads a beautiful ball to Findley on the left. He wins a corner.

  •

    [Comment from Jonathan Bourdeau]
@KyleB Yes but it would not be a good idea to lose this game.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Dempsey deep in the corner with the ball, plays it back to Bradley but a miscommunication with Cherundolo means the ball is played to nobody.

  •

    Jeff Carlisle: And a pk.

  •

    [Comment from Karthi]
If this match had the GER-SRB refs, we'd have 5 yellow cards by now

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: I think Slovenia can taste the Round of 16 here. The U.S. knows it needs the win badly.

  •

    [Comment from KyleB]
Worth noting, the US cannot advance or be eliminated today.

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: It never is!

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: A good bit of singing from the off as Slovenia chases down a loose ball.

  •

JemeleHill: Leander, never let it be said that you aren't multi-talented

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Three bumps, bump, two bumps.

  •

    [Comment from Helen Keller]
I can't see and this stupid game cast isnt in braille...Leander, is that you?

  •

Luke Cyphers: Physical first two minutes. Wow.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Torres is bowled over. Free kick in the middle of the park.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Dempsey is hiding at the other end of the field while a bloody opponent, Ljubijankic is treated.

  •

JemeleHill: Bit of jawing by both teams after that. That'll add some intensity. Bad blood a few seconds in, gotta love it

  •

    [Comment from Ray]
I see the Slovenian coach is from the Bob Bradley school of fashion.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Dempsey convinced the ref it was head-to-head.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Some would dole out a red for that.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Dempsey goes up for a header and elbows an opponent, somehow getting away without a card, it seems, even though the referee walked at him for a good bit.

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: We're off!

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: If there was any lingering doubt that Torres was brought on to handle the ball, he'll be doing the kick-off with Findley.

  •

    [Comment from dc in nyc]
oh good the ref is from Malawi - is he going to hold Madonna against us?

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Those trinkets will be on eBay soon.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Worth nothing, if Cherundolo, DeMerit or Findley incur another yellow card, they're suspended for the game against Algeria.

  •

Chris Jones: The Slovenian dude next to him is laughing his butt off.

  •

    [Comment from Guillermo]
I just punched a Slovakian co-worker in the face

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Time for a huddle.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Koren and Bocanegra have exchanged trinkets.

  •

JemeleHill: I'm not a hater. I just play one on TV

  •

    [Comment from randy]
yo nickw, your anthem was a little pitchy, dawg

  •

Luke Cyphers: Playa's gotta play, and a hata's gotta ... hat.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: As the Dog Whisperer would say, "It's all about positive energy."

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Get off the Hatorade, Jemele.

  •

JemeleHill: If not a little off key

  •

Jeff Carlisle: And now back tot he vuvuzelas.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: ... and the home... of the.... braaaave."

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Props to the U.S. fans. Loud and proud.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Time to stand for anthems... BRB.

  •

Chris Jones: Here's your stupid comment, JeffT. Now let's watch some soccer.

  •

    [Comment from JeffT]
you post stupid comments from people like mike? but not mine ?

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Teams are out on the field. Behind two humongous FIFA flags, which seem to get bigger every single game.

  •

Chris Jones: Comfort's a very important thing.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Only for Alexi Lalas.

  •

    Luke Cyphers: No.

  •

    [Comment from Captain America]
If we make it to the final will Bradley buy a suit?

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: Flags our out.

  •

    [Comment from Mike]
Matt Damon will lead us to victory. THIS OUR DESTINY!

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Then there is a mystery flag with "Buzim" on it. Perhaps that should be the name of Jemele's beer.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Bradley and his posse are out.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: And of course an Irish flag with "Shamrock Rovers" on it.

  •

Luke Cyphers: Stuart Holden's fans in the house.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: The Scots are here too. There's a Scottish flag on the opposite grandstand with "Easter Road Tartan Army" on it.

  •

    [Comment from Kyle]
Canada is cool though, it's like America's hat.

  •

JemeleHill: Chris also has been lording his universal health care and non-violence over us.

  •

    [Comment from Dudley Dooright]
Hey Chris, are you wearing a Canadian Tux for today's game?

  •

Chris Jones: I love this... EVEN Leander. Hilarious.

  •

    [Comment from DYMongoose]
Hahaha! Even Leander makes fun of Canadians!

  •

JemeleHill: Chris Jones is a communist?! That explains the Karl Marx starter kit he had

  •

Luke Cyphers: For the record, Chris is Canadian. Not I. Though I live 30 miles from Canadia.

  •

    [Comment from AMERICA]

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: ANd he's Canadian too!

  •

Luke Cyphers: Hello. I don't have a feel for this match at all, so I'll go with history, which means the Yanks make things difficult for themselves but survive somehow. A 1-1 draw and all eyes on the Algeria game.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Luke Cyphers has joined us too.

    [Comment from Nate]
I think hot dog water is worse. At least you know what goes into a bong

  •

Jeff Carlisle: The fact that Leander was the only baseball playing kid in Brussels helped. The bat came in handy.

  •

JemeleHill: To be fair, it's not that hard to convince most Americans not to do work

  •

    [Comment from Eric Wynalda]
YES! Good to know so many Americans are shunning their work duties this morning to follow the GameCast.

  •

    [Comment from Galvin]

  •

Chris Jones: I watched him sacrifice a goat last night. Made me uncomfortable.

  •

    [Comment from Jordan]
Leander is getting a cult following

  •

JemeleHill: Finally, someone who appreciates my vocabulary!

  •

Jeff Carlisle: I'm wondering if Podolski's missed pk upset some Eastern European betting syndicates.

  •

    [Comment from Tony]
Sitting in class, following Leander!! GET UP USA!!!!

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: That would seem to be the logic of this World Cup. But you're assuming the U.S. is the favorite. While it is generally considered to be. Slovenia looked strong in its opener.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: And what is it with the Serbs playing handball? That's two games in a row with handballs for pks.

  •

    [Comment from Matt]
Leander...since nothing that should have happened has happened yet...wouldnt you say Slovenia most likely will come out on top today...and Good morning also Sir...!!!

  •

    [Comment from Forte]
top of the morning to you christopher

  •

JemeleHill: I understood the first yellow on Klose, but the second one was abysmal.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: A tiny little sport plane flies over now, and from my vantage point just misses a helicopter. It could have been hundreds of yards though.

  •

Chris Jones: And Klose's booking... Jeez.

  •

Chris Jones: Here, a bunch of people just messed themselves watching Serbia beat Germany, 1-0. Not quite Switzerland-Spain, but up there.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Regarding the Slovenian lineup, I'm actually pleased to see Dedic on the bench. Yes, he was brutal against Algeria, but he seems like the kind of quick, annoying player that could trouble the backline.

The book on Ljubijankic is that he's more skillful than Dedic, but not as quick. We'll see how he works with Novakovic.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Chris Jones will have to describe his own surroundings, since he's on the other side of the country.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Since I've described everything going on in front of us, I should describe the press box too. The two seats on either side of me are vacant, which has almost nothing to do with my personal hygiene. At the next table Jemele peers out into the stadium, scouring for nuggets of journalistic gold. Jeff is staring at his computer screen, with his glasses at the tip of his nose, like an old school headmaster, oozing authority.

  •

Chris Jones: Afternoon/morning everybody from here in beautiful Cape Town, awaiting England-Algeria.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: We really should have made that more clear. It's not nice to deceive people who can't see what's happening like that. We humbly apologize.

  •

    JemeleHill: Great odds, lol

  •

    [Comment from Craig]
Hey, 298 million more chances for a star soccer player right?

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Only if you're passing it back to the keepers. They're the only ones who have them on.

  •

    [Comment from American Outlaw]
Don't Tread on ME! What it do Deuce? Score some more.

  •

    [Comment from Sean]
Orange socks? I suppose it might make for a better passing target?

  •

Jeff Carlisle: At least the PA system isn't as loud as Rustenburg. Looks like I won't be needing the cochlear implant after all.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Good section of Slovenians too. But since Slovenia counts just two million inhabitants and the U.S. 300 million, this should be a walkover. Does it work that way?

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: You'll be happy to know that the stadium is heaving in people with stars and stripes painted across their bodies and such.

  •

JemeleHill: The South Africans already have chosen sides. They were cheering vigorously with the American fans when the U.S. players took the field.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: The U.S. players come pouring out of the tunnel to much aplomb.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Goalkeeper: Samir Handanovic. Boo!
Defenders: Miso Brecko, Marko Suler, Bostjan Cesar and Bojan Jokic. Booo!
Midfielders: Valter Birsa, Robert Koren, Aleksandar Radosavljevic and Andraw Kirm. Boooo!
Attackers: Zlatan Ljubijankic and Milivoke Novakovic. Booooo!

  •

JemeleHill: No matter how loud the vuvuzelas are, it isn't as loud as the orange socks the US players have on. Holy brightness, Batman!

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: I suppose I owe you some Slovenia names too.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: You'll also be happy to know that the U.S. had its warm-up balls laid in a beautifully straight row along the sideline in front of the American dugout. That way, they're really easy to pick for the players.

As such, psychologically, the U.S. is already 1-0 ahead.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: Make that vuvuzela. I don't want to get sued.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: The vuvezela volume just increased ten-fold.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: The U.S. goalkeepers are out and receive a loud roar!

  •

Jeff Carlisle: I'm not surprised to see Findley out there either as the threat of his speed is needed. But if Slovenia end up parking the bus in front of goal, I'd expect Buddle to get some significant minutes as well.

  •

Jeff Carlisle: I concur. Torres has the guile and calm on the ball to unlock Slovenia. I'd also add that Torres probably wasn't ready a year ago, but I think he's ready now.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: What say you, Jeff?

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: So Torres is in there. Very good news I reckon.

  •

    Leander Schaerlaeckens: USA:
    Goalkeeper: Tim Howard. Yay!
Defenders: Carlos Bocanegra, Oguchi Onyewu, Jay DeMerit and Steve Cherundolo. Yaay!
Midfielders: Landon Donovan, Jose Torres, Michael Bradley and Clint Dempsey. Yaaay!
Attackers: Jozy Altidore and Robbie Findley. Yaaaay!

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Here come your lineups... well, when I finish typing them up...

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Rubbish indeed. They'd be loathe not to start him here. The U.S. needs his creativity against a defensive opponent.

  •

    [Comment from Erik]
Lalas said Torres "isn't ready" and is for "four years down the line." Rubbish, no?

  •

    [Comment from Kipa]
Star-studded cast. Even Chris Jones too

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: All that is to say, the U.S. had better win here, to spare itself a great deal of trouble.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: After drawing1-1 with England in its opening game, the U.S. very much needs a win here. Slovenia won its first game against Algeria after all, giving it three points. Should the U.S. lose and England beat Algeria, then Slovenia will have 6 points, and England will have 4. The U.S. would have 1 and Algeria 0. Which would mean that the U.S. would need to beat Algeria and England would have to lose to Slovenia. Which would be a tall order. If the U.S. loses, it will also still be two points behind Slovenia, meaning it would have to beat Algeria and Slovenia would have to lose.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: In its second game here at the World Cup in South Africa, the Americans will play Slovenia in a pivotal game in Group C.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: We'll be bringing you a huge game for all those with a remote interest in the U.S. national team.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: I hope I didn't forget anybody.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: So will ESPN.com Page 2 Columnist Jemele Hill, fellow ESPN.com soccer writer Jeff Carlisle, ESPN The Magazine senior writer Luke Cyphers and ESPN The Magazine Contributing Editor and Esquire writer-at-large Chris Jones.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: I'm in Ellis Park Stadium and will be with you all game.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: It's warm here for a chance. By warm, of course, I mean that it's not less than 40 degrees Fahrenheit, which is feeling tropical after the last few days.

  •

Leander Schaerlaeckens: Greetings from Johannesburg, everybody!
