Ex-Man United forward Diego Forlan lands first managerial role with Penarol

Former Manchester United forward Diego Forlan has been named manager of Uruguayan side Club Atletico Penarol, marking his first coaching role.

Forlan, 40, represented United between 2002 and 2004, while his playing career also included spells at Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan and Villarreal. The former Uruguay international played for Penarol between 2015 and 2016, winning a Primera Division title with the club.

Nacional fan shot and killed in Uruguayan club's title celebrations

Newly crowned Uruguay champions Nacional have condemned the killing of one of their fans during Sunday's title celebrations.

Local media reported that a 24-year-old supporter was shot dead near the club's headquarters in Montevideo.

Fans took to the streets in the Uruguay capital to celebrate Nacional's championship-clinching 1-0 win over Penarol on Sunday.

Uruguayan club Fenix handed sanction after chicken-kicking fiasco

Animal rights groups have condemned the actions of Gaston Alegari after he was photographed kicking a chicken on Sunday.

Uruguay's football association has sanctioned first-division club Fenix after two chickens were let loose on the pitch in a game against Racing on Sunday.

The incident has also made club director Gaston Alegari a target of criticism from animal rights groups and fans after he violently kicked the chicken off the pitch.

Alegari took to Twitter on Monday to apologise for his behaviour.

Club football in Uruguay struggling against global pressures

Nacional were the last Uruguayan team to win the Copa Libertadores back in 1988.

The Uruguayan Primera Division got underway this weekend with one of its teams missing.

On the eve of the kickoff, El Tanque Sisley pulled out due to not being able to pay their debts. And so the championship proceeds with the awkward, odd number of 15 participating clubs.

The size of the debt in question seems, by the standard of global football, almost laughably puny. El Tanque Sisley allegedly owe some $357,000, but have only been able to raise around $250,000.

Penarol center-back Yeferson Quintana joins San Jose on loan

The San Jose Earthquakes have signed Penarol's Yeferson Quintana on a year-long loan with an option to buy.

The 21-year-old center-back made 29 appearances across all competitions for the Carboneros last season, scoring three goals.
