Schalke's Weston McKennie pulls out of United States squad with injury

Weston McKennie chats with ESPN about the future of the USMNT, why he's happy he bypassed MLS for the Bundesliga and more.

Weston McKennie is the latest player to pull out of the U.S. squad that will face Colombia and Peru in friendlies during the upcoming international window, the U.S. Soccer Federation announced on Sunday.

Toronto FC midfielder Marky Delgado will take McKennie's place on the roster, keeping the size of the team at 23 players.

McKennie, 20, scored his first Bundesliga goal in Schalke's 2-0 victory over Fortuna Dusseldorf on Saturday, just days after tallying his first goal for the club in their 1-0 Champions League victory over Lokomotiv Moscow. But McKennie was forced to leave the Dusseldorf match in the 79th minute with what was initially described as a calf injury.

Schalke manager Domenico Tedesco then downplayed the severity of the ailment, stating the player was exhausted. But a press release from the USSF said that McKennie wouldn't be able to play in the U.S. matches due to a right adductor injury.

McKennie joins Borussia Dortmund midfielder Christian Pulisic and New York Red Bulls midfielder Tyler Adams on the sidelines. Pulisic is dealing with a calf injury while Adams is suffering from back spasms.

McKennie is in his second full season with Schalke, having made 34 league and cup appearances scoring two goals. He has been capped six times by the U.S. and scored on his debut against Portugal last November.
