U.S. U20 and Arsenal midfielder Gedion Zelalem suffers left knee injury

U.S. and Arsenal midfielder Gedion Zelalem will miss the remainder of the Under-20 World Cup after injuring his left knee in a 3-3 draw with Ecuador, U.S. Soccer has announced.

Zelalem started the match against the South Americans but was substituted with the injury in the 34th minute.

Zelalem will consult with the U.S. Soccer and Arsenal medical teams in order to formulate a plan for treatment, according to a statement released by U.S. Soccer.

Football London reported that he had torn his ACL.

A source told ESPN FC: "It looks [that] way," when asked about a torn ACL.

Zelalem has been on loan to Dutch second division club VVV Venlo.

The Americans next face Senegal, who lead Group F after a 2-0 win over Saudi Arabia, on Thursday.

Sixteen of the 24 teams advance to the second round -- the top two from each of the six groups and the four best third-place finishers.

The final will be played on June 11.
