Clint Dempsey, Jozy Altidore on U.S. Player of Year award shortlist

Jozy Altidore, Clint Dempsey, Bobby Wood, Michael Bradley and Geoff Cameron are the players on the five-man shortlist for the 2016 U.S. Soccer Male Player of the Year award, which will be announced on Dec. 9.

Seattle's Dempsey, a three-time winner, last picked up the prize back-to-back in 2011 and 2012, though he has not played since August because of an irregular heartbeat.

Altidore, who collected the honor in 2013, will take the field in the MLS Cup final on Saturday for Toronto FC. He managed a U.S.-high six goals and two assists for his country this year, and his club teammate and captain Bradley, 2015's Male Player of the Year, has put in a number of fine performances in midfield.

Hamburg's Wood recorded a career-best four goals and two assists, while Stoke defender Cameron starred at the Copa America this summer.

Voting for the award will be U.S. Soccer staff and coaches, players who earned a cap in 2016, MLS and NASL coaches, media as well as some former players.
