Geoff Cameron not likely to be fit for U.S. duty - Stoke's Mark Hughes

Geoff Cameron is unlikely to be fit for the United States' World Cup qualifying matches against Mexico and Costa Rica, says Stoke City manager Mark Hughes.

The defender missed Stoke's win over Swansea on Monday with a knee complaint, though he had been expected to return on Saturday at West Ham.

But at his prematch news conference on Friday, Hughes said that Cameron's knee was not yet fully recovered.

"We're going to have to wait on Geoff," Hughes said. "He's trained with the physios and may have a chance of coming out and joining in tomorrow but we'll have to wait and see, it's a long shot."

The manager later added: "Geoff's knee has improved but when you open up the knee joint they seem to improve rapidly -- but the last five or 10 percent is much slower.

"It's unlikely he'll be involved tomorrow -- or in international level next week."

Cameron was injured on Oct. 22 in the dying moments of Stoke's 2-0 win against Hull City.

"The guy kind of landed on my knee and twisted it a little bit," Cameron told ESPN FC via telephone.

The United States host Mexico on Nov. 11 in the first World Cup qualifier of the final hexagonal round, followed by a trip to Costa Rica four days later.

Cameron's absence would be a blow for Jurgen Klinsmann, who is expected to announce his squad this weekend, against his team's top two competitors in CONCACAF.

"I've been trying to get fit," Cameron said. "Obviously I want to play against Mexico -- that's the big game for sure -- and I'll devastated and upset if I can't. But if I'm not right, I'm not right."

Cameron started in all of the Americans' Copa America games this summer, as well as the most recent World Cup qualifiers in September and last month's friendly in Cuba.
