U.S. progress report: Have Klinsmann & Co. truly turned the corner?

There's something familiar about the way the U.S. men's national team has reached the semifinals of the Copa America Centenario. Its last group-stage game, a 1-0 win against Paraguay, and its 2-1 win over Ecuador in the quarterfinals both were strong and committed performances that were long on organization, grit and commitment while being short on possession, passing and control.

Historically, many of the USMNT's best moments were accomplished using a similar approach. That approach was also the reason that five years ago, Bob Bradley was fired and Jurgen Klinsmann was brought in to take over the team. The United States Soccer Federation came to the conclusion that being gritty and just good enough wasn't, in fact, good enough.

The USMNT getting to the semifinals of a major tournament is a great accomplishment, but is it progress? And, moreover, has the team and program significantly improved since Klinsmann took over?
