U.S. prospects blog: Midfielder Marky Delgado rising in MLS
HARRISON, N.J. - Maybe it wasn't that surprising that even the most serious U.S. youth national team geeks hadn't seen much of Marky Delgado when Tab Ramos named the Los Angeles-area native to the American squad for last summer's FIFA U20 World Cup in New Zealand.
Delgado, then 19, had an impressive 37 MLS appearances at the time, but all of them had come with now-defunct Los Angeles-based Chivas USA (with whom he signed a homegrown deal as a 16-year-old), a team that might as well have not existed for neutrals for its final few seasons before it was put out of its misery following the domestic league's 2014 campaign. Plus, the young midfielder hadn't played an MLS minute for Toronto FC when Ramos' roster was announced.
But Delgado's profile quietly began to grow last summer after he played in all five games for the U.S. in New Zealand, helping his country reach the quarterfinals before being eliminated, on penalties, by eventual champion Serbia. He then returned to Toronto and started 20 consecutive league games for TFC....
