United States picks experienced preliminary squad for CONCACAF Cup

United States coach Jurgen Klinsmann has called up an experienced group of 35 players for the provisional squad to face Mexico in the CONCACAF Cup on Oct. 10.

Twenty of the 23 players who played for the U.S. at the 2014 World Cup are back in the squad, with only midfielder Brad Davis, winger Julian Green and defender Timothy Chandler missing out.

Chandler has a knee injury, while Green is likely to play for the U.S. under-23 squad in Olympic qualifying next month instead. Davis had a knee injury that ruled him out of the CONCACAF Gold Cup earlier this summer, but he has played steadily for the Houston Dynamo since then.

In addition to the World Cup veterans, Klinsmann also included a number of names who have played for the U.S. earlier this year, including forwards Alan Gordon, Jordan Morris and Bobby Wood. Gordon earned just his second cap in the Gold Cup semifinal defeat to Jamaica.

Reserve goalkeeper William Yarbrough is the only player from the Gold Cup squad who does not return to the squad to face Mexico, with D.C. United's Bill Hamid getting the nod instead.

The U.S. will need to cut the squad to 23 players by Oct. 1.

The winner of the CONCACAF Cup will play in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia. The game -- set for the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California -- became a necessary playoff when the U.S. and Mexico each won an edition of the past two Gold Cups.

Mexico also announced its preliminary squad, which included Giovani dos Santos after he was controversially left out of recent friendlies.
