United States' win over Germany will send a message, says Klinsmann

Jurgen Klinsmann felt his United States side had sent a message to the world with their shock 2-1 victory over Germany in Cologne on Wednesday night.

After beating the Netherlands in a friendly just days ago, the U.S. stunned the defending world champions despite going behind early on to Mario Gotze's 12th-minute strike.

Mix Diskerud levelled just before half-time before Germany-based Bobby Wood struck two minutes from time to secure a significant win for the USA, much to the delight of Klinsmann, who showed little remorse in beating his home country.

"This was an entertaining little game with a good ending for us," he told Germany's ARD television.

"My players were really happy in the dressing room. The way things went in the second half, we thoroughly deserved the win too.

"This success will bring more attention to football in America."

It was a result Germany will be keen to forget as soon as possible as they prepare to face minnows Gibraltar in a Euro 2016 qualifier at the weekend.

"At some stage, all of our energy seemed to disappear," Germany coach Joachim Low said.

"USA had more bite and they were better than us."

Nevertheless, the result should not be repeated against Gibraltar on Saturday with captain Bastian Schweinsteiger convinced it was just a stumble.

"It was an important game for us to get back into a rhythm and of course we wanted to win it, but you've also got to look at where the Americans are and where we are in terms of fitness levels," said the Bayern Munich midfielder.

"I expect we will deliver a good game against Gibraltar."
