U.S. to learn Jermaine Jones' status for CONCACAF Gold Cup soon

Jurgen Klinsmann and the United States will soon know whether Jermaine Jones' injured groin will keep him out of the Gold Cup this summer.

Jones was hurt while playing for the New England Revolution on Sunday and was scratched from the U.S. team who will face Netherlands and Germany in friendlies this week.

The U.S. opens the Gold Cup on July 3 against Guatemala, and manager Klinsmann said he would have an update "over the next couple of days" about Jones' status for the CONCACAF tournament.

"He's still getting evaluated by the doctors," Klinsmann said.

Stanford standout Jordan Morris joined the team as a replacement for Jones on Wednesday after playing with the under-23 squad at the Toulon Tournament in France, even though the under-23s are still to play in a third-place game on Sunday.

Captain Clint Dempsey will also miss the friendlies while awaiting the birth of his fourth child and Alejandro Bedoya is recovering from a knee injury, but Klinsmann hinted the squad for the friendlies will bear a great resemblance to the one named for the Gold Cup

"We don't know what will happen the next two or three weeks," Klinsmann said. "But the percentage is very high."

That could mean World Cup starters Graham Zusi, Matt Besler and Omar Gonzalez could be left out of the squad after missing the cut for the friendlies at the coach's discretion,

The U.S. will play Netherlands on June 5 in Amsterdam (2:30 p.m. ET on ESPN/WatchESPN); the game against Germany is set for June 10 in Cologne (2:45 p.m. ET on Fox Sports 1).

Even though their opponents finished first and third at the World Cup, Klinsmann said he expects the Americans to compete.

"Are we coming here to get results? Yes, we are," the coach told reporters at Amsterdam ArenA. "We want to compete with them, in real games. And we want to see a lot of things from our players, just a couple weeks away from the Gold Cup."
