U.S. under-17 star Haji Wright to join New York Cosmos, report says

Haji Wright will join the New York Cosmos instead of MLS or a team in Europe.

United States' under-17 star Haji Wright is set to sign with the New York Cosmos, according to the New York Times.

Earlier this month, Wright helped the United States qualify for this summer's under-17 World Cup in Chile, scoring once as the Americans' starting striker in the CONCACAF Championship.

Now he's set to spurn Major League Soccer and a possible move to Europe to join the Cosmos in the second-tier North American Soccer League, the Times reported.

Wright, who turned 17 on Friday, will train with the Cosmos' first team once the deal is announced, the newspaper said.

Wright scored 18 goals in 22 games for the U.S. under-17s in 2014 and has trained with Bundesliga club Schalke.

U.S. under-17 coach Richie Williams spoke to Grantland in February about Wright.

"He's tall. He's athletic. He can run. He's strong on the ball. He can use both feet," Williams said. "Technically, he's very good. He has a great ability to run at players. He can score goals or set up goals."
