Jurgen Klinsmann sets roster
LA Galaxy midfielder Landon Donovan and MLS players Graham Zusi, Matt Besler, Brad Davis, Kyle Beckerman and Nick Rimando were all omitted from U.S. team coach Jurgen Klinsmann's 23-man roster for upcoming friendlies.
McIntyre: Right back up for grabs
Klinsmann did not specifically address Donovan's ankle issues, but U.S. Soccer said in a statement Monday that Donovan, goalkeeper Brad Guzan and defenders Edgar Castillo and Clarence Goodson are all "nursing injuries and not available for selection."
The team is expected to meet Monday in Glasgow.
"The results in MLS wound up fitting in with our roster plans, so we didn't need to call in any guys who are still in the playoffs," Klinsmann said. "There are some injuries issues that now give other players the chance to step up."
The U.S. meets Scotland on Nov. 15 in Glasgow at 3 p.m. ET, then on Nov. 19 will play Austria for the first time since 1998.
Donovan played poorly against Jamaica in a World Cup qualifier Oct. 11 and was dropped for the match at Panama four days later. While he returned to the field for the Galaxy on Oct. 20 and appeared in all three of the team's playoff games, he did not score any goals. Real Salt Lake ended the Galaxy's bid for a third consecutive MLS Cup last week.
"We are excited about the group we have coming in and the big opportunity to finish the year on a high note," said Klinsmann. "We want to use these games to prove a point and see that our players are continuing to improve as we build towards the World Cup.
Roma's Michael Bradley is back in the roster after suffering an ankle sprain in pregame warm-ups before the Sept. 6 qualifier in Costa Rica.
Defender Eric Lichaj was selected for the first time since Klinsmann became coach. Lichaj has not played for the U.S. since the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup final.
Midfielder Brek Shea was included despite making just two appearances for Stoke this season, both in the League Cup.
