Mykhailo Fomenko to quit as Ukraine boss after Euro 2016 elimination

Ukraine coach Mykhailo Fomenko has said he will resign from his post after the final group game against Poland after his side's early elimination from Euro 2016.

Fomenko made his decision after Ukraine -- without a point after defeats to Germany and Northern Ireland -- became the first team to go out of the tournament.

Legendary Ukraine striker Andriy Shevchenko, currently assistant coach, has been tipped to take over.

"What sense does it make to continue after failing with the task that was set for the tournament?" Fomenko said on Ukraine's national TV channel.

"I did not feel the united team that clinched the spot at the Euros. I paid attention to this during warm-up games against Cyprus and Wales.

"Everyone saw what was going on at the end of the Ukrainian championship. This situation affected the team's psychology."

Fomenko was referring to an ongoing row between Shakhtar Dontesk midfielder Taras Stepanenko and Dynamo Kiev winger Andriy Yarmolenko.

"I would like peace and friendship to prevail inside our team," he added.

"As a man, I am used to being responsible for my actions. I admit my fault. I did it all wrong in that situation."

Addressing speculation that Shevchenko would succeed him, he said: "God bless him to be as good a coach as he was a player."
