Israel claim third place

Lior Refaelov scored early and Rami Gershon added an injury time strike as Israel rounded off their Euro 2012 qualifying campaign with a 2-0 win in Malta to confirm third place in Group F.

Luis Fernandez's men, who started the night with no hope of catching the top two, Greece or Croatia, went through the motions to claim a win which ensured Malta ended their campaign with a single point.

Refaelov and Bebras Natkho both had early chances for the visitors before Rafaelov opened the scoring in the 11th minute, sliding home left-footed from six yards after a an attempted clearance by Gareth Sciberras.

Malta responded with Michael Mifsud forcing a save out of Israeli goalkeeper Dudu Aouate, then his counterpart Andrew Hogg did well to catch a header from Tomer Hemed just before the half-hour.

Mifsud and Paul Fenech threatened in a bright period for Malta and they continued to look dangerous in the second half with Mifsud and Ivan Woods forcing saves out of Aouate in quick succession.

Scenting a rare point, Malta continued to look dangerous, with Mifsud seeing another shot blocked by Aouate, although they were stretched at the back and both Natkho and Hemed came close.

Malta's hopes were finally ended in added time when Natkho flung in a cross from the right wing and Gershon rose to head home Israel's second from the corner of the six-yard box.
