KCCA FC head coach Mike Mutebi believes that his side's victory over Egyptian giants Al Ahly on Tuesday proved that they can hold their own against Africa's best.
The Ugandan champions beat the Cairene heavyweights 2-0 in a CAF Champions League Group A clash at the Mandela National Stadium, Namboole thanks to goals from Ibrahim Saddam Juma and skipper Denis Timothy Awany.
KCCA had lost their opening group game 1-0 against Botswana's Township Rollers.
"This is a very sweet win because my boys have showed that they can compete against the best," Mutebi told KweséESPN.
"Gone are the days when we used to over-respect teams from Egypt," he added. "We displayed high level of tactical discipline.
"In the first half we were a little weak, giving away balls with schoolboy mistakes. The second half we could have scored about four goals.
"We tested ourselves against a very good team and I am satisfied as a coach.
Juma put KCCA ahead after 73 when he beat Mohamed El-Shenawy with a powerful strike, before Awany struck from the spot two minutes from time after Elsayed Ayman had brought down substitute Derrick Nsibambi.
KCCA keeper Charles Lukwago had earlier denied Walid Said Ebeid from the penalty spot in the first half.
"This was not our day, because we created many scoring chances and also missed a penalty in the first half," Ahly coach Hossam El-Badry said in the post-match press conference.
"I had seven players missing from the team," he added. "All teams still have a chance in Group A because every team can win at home."
KCCA are second in Group A on three points, one behind Esperance, who beat Township Rollers 4-1 in Rades on Tuesday. Ahly are bottom of the pile on one point.
Uganda coach Sebastien Desabre, who watched the match, was also impressed with what he saw from KCCA.
"I think KCCA FC started poorly," he told KweséESPN, "but the players improved and put up a good show."
