Government demands Uganda FA to account for FIFA, CAF funds

The State Minister for Sports, Charles Bakkabulindi, has demanded that the Uganda FA produce an accountability report for the funds they receive from sponsors, FIFA and CAF.

Bakkabulindi has demanded that the federation make the accountability report by the close of business on July 13th as the government seek transparency.

"Failure to do so will result into severe repercussions from this office," stated a letter dated July 4th as seen by KweséESPN.

The letter, titled 'Accountability for funds and other resources received by FUFA', was also shared with the Minister of Education and Sports Janet Kataaha Museveni, who is also the first Lady and wife of the President, among others.

Bakkabulindi also questioned why the Uganda FA has refused to send the accountability at an earlier date, as it was originally requested in March this year.

"Reference is made to letters dated May 24th and March 30th from the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education and Sports, requesting you to submit accountability for all funds and resources received from FIFA, CAF and sponsors," stated the letter addressed to the FUFA Chief Executive Officer Edgar Suubi Watson.

The State Minister proceeded to blame the FA for undermining the Ministry.

"No written or verbal response has been received by the Permanent Secretary from your office despite the set deadline," the letter continued.

"This is not only tantamount to contempt of authority but also a sign of lack transparency by the FUFA officials."

When contacted, the deputy Chief Executive Officer of the FA, Humphrey Mandu, said he has not been in office for two weeks and cannot comment.

Although the government of Uganda does not finance the national team's engagements, it occasionally chips in support, including for the recent participation at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon.
