Hoeness: Super Cup not about revenge

Bayern Munich are not out for revenge when they take on Chelsea in the UEFA Super Cup on Friday, president Uli Hoeness has said.

• Schaaf:  Freiburg sneak late draw as Bayern prepare for Chelsea
• Schweinsteiger a Super Cup doubt after ankle strain

The game is a rematch of the 2012 Champions League final, played at Bayern’s Allianz Arena, which Chelsea won on penalties. It will be also be the first meeting between Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola since their departures from Real Madrid and Barcelona.

“With the 2012 and 2013 Champions League winners meeting, this game provides a very special attraction,” Hoeness told Sport Bild. “It is a prestige thing. From a sporting perspective, it is a very interesting match.

“It might have been about revenge if we hadn’t won the 2013 Champions League. That shock [the defeat to Chelsea] was put into perspective when we masterfully won the following year. We were the best team in Europe -- period.”

Hoeness suggested the reunion of Mourinho and Guardiola would be the most interesting aspect of the match, saying: “In Spain, Pep and Jose Mourinho had several big fights over the years -- our coach won them by a mile.

“The fact is, we never went for Mourinho but rather for Guardiola. Through that, I think, we made a clear statement.”

Hoeness also added that Bayern team needed some time for fine-tuning but conceded that the “pressure from the outside” on Guardiola and his players was enormous.

“We don’t have to stoke it by demanding another Champions League triumph,” he said. “Of course that is a dream, but you can’t expect it. Moreover, we have signed Pep Guardiola not for one but for three seasons.”

With the UEFA Player of the Year award due to be presented to either Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi or Bayern’s Franck Ribery, Hoeness said there could only be on winner in Prague on Thursday.

“I rate Messi and I also rate Ronaldo,” he added. “But after Franck’s performances, especially in the Champions League, there is no reason for me to not give the trophy to Franck this year.

“It can only be him as the winner. Messi and FC Barcelona were eliminated by Bayern. And Ronaldo is no competition at all -- I rate Franck much higher. There are no sporting reasons not to vote for him: it could only be political reasons.”
