Brussels Euro 2020 host city status in jeopardy over new stadium delay

Politics surrounding a proposed new stadium could cost Brussels its Euro 2020 host city status.

MACOLIN, Switzerland -- Belgium's most-senior football official doubts that a planned new stadium in Brussels can be ready for the 2020 European Championship.

FIFA Council member Michel D'Hooghe tells The Associated Press time is running out to solve political problems with the 60,000-capacity Eurostadium project.

D'Hooghe said: "If they want to build it they have to start building very soon, and there I have severe doubts."

UEFA chose Brussels in 2014 among 13 host cities across the continent for Euro 2020.

Amid disputes between city and regional lawmakers, Brussels club Anderlecht also withdrew plans to use the new stadium.

The city's 50,000-seat King Baudouin stadium lacks the facilities for a modern tournament.

Still, D'Hooghe says it's "not a big problem for UEFA" if it needs to find a replacement city.
