George Leekens appointed as new manager of Hungary

George Leekens
George Leekens has taken over the Hungary national team.

Former Belgium and Algeria coach George Leekens was appointed Hungary manager on Monday.

The Hungarian Football Federation gave Leekens a two-year contract to the end of qualifying for the 2020 European Championship, with the option of a six-month extension if the team qualify.

The federation said Leekens will assume his post after Hungary's two friendlies in November, when the team will be led by interim coach Zoltan Szelesi. Former coach Bernd Storck left the job two weeks ago.

Jose Fonte relishing being part of Portugal Euro 2016 squad

Jose Fonte is on the brink of helping Portugal to the Euro 2016 final, four years on from watching their last semifinal at home without so much as a Premier League appearance to his name.

A part of the Sporting Lisbon academy at the same time as Cristiano Ronaldo, their routes to this point could not have been much more different.

While the forward, in Fonte's words, "rose like a rocket" with medal-laden spells at Manchester United and now Real Madrid, the centre-back bumped around Portuguese clubs...

France's depleted defence will make or break Les Bleus' Euro title bid

As tournament favourites, France stand a good chance of winning the European Championship for the third time in their history.

Didier Deschamps' side go into the tournament in fine form -- they have an 90 percent win rate in 2015-16 (9-1) -- and boast some of the continent's finest attacking talent.

Antoine Griezmann was a key performer as Atletico Madrid reached the Champions League final (he also scored a goal every 139 minutes in La Liga) while West Ham United's Dimitri Payet was shortlisted for the Premier League Player of the Year award thanks to the finest season of his career.

Manchester United's Anthony Martial (age 20) scored 17 times in his debut season in England and Bayern Munich's Kingsley Coman (age 19) completed more dribbles (45) than anyone else in the Bundesliga.

Throw in Juventus' Paul Pogba -- arguably the world's most complete midfielder -- and it adds up to a remarkable array of talent.

At the other end of the pitch, however, things appear less rosy. Deschamps has had a welter of problems casting a shadow over their chances as the defensive part of the team has suffered a series of setbacks.

Euro qualifying statistical standouts: Players, teams to watch in France

Euro 2016 starts Friday as hosts France take on Romania. In advance of the feast of football, we researched the players and teams that stood out during qualifying via a variety of statistical metrics with the aim of shedding a little extra light on the action over the next month.

Here's a look at statistical standouts from Euro qualifying, those players and teams that led key categories -- ranging from chances created to tackles -- along with a full rank of each team's attack and defence, as calculated by ESPN's expected goal model.

For inclusion here, players had to play a minimum of 450 minutes (about five full matches) during Euro qualifying. Also, France, as tournament hosts, did not have to qualify and thus there is no qualifying data for Les Bleus.
