Atletico Madrid must show 'humility' in Europa League final - Diego Simeone

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone has said "humility" will be key to his team's chances in Wednesday's Europa League final against Marseille.

Simeone's side, who dropped into the competition from the Champions League, are favourites to win in Lyon.

No French side has won the Europa League or its predecessor the UEFA Cup, with Marseille sporting director Andoni Zubizaretta hasving described his team as outsiders.

But Simeone told his prematch news conference that although his team had experience of finals, having won the Europa League in 2012 and reached two Champions League finals since, they had to show the right attitude.

"We are playing another final where there is a lot of emotion and excitement but, above all, humility," he said.

"When you play here, you need to have that attitude to work hard. Experience is important, but not decisive."

Marseille lead the Europa League table for yellow cards (30) and reds (three), while Atletico right-back Sime Vrsaljko and Simeone were sent off in the semifinal first leg win at Arsenal.

"I see similarities in both teams, in their enthusiasm, and their play," the Atleti coach said. "It will be a nice final, with plenty of friction."

Simeone will watch from the stands following his sending off, with assistant German Burgos in charge on the bench.

"Although I'm sad not to be there, I have a great feeling with German," he said. "We know each other a whole life, and we understand football the same way.

"Against Arsenal the team moved well, and we are a team who have prepared a lot. I have faith in German."

Marseille playmaker Dimitri Payet, involved in eight goals in his last six Europa League appearances, is a doubt due to injury.

Simeone said the Ligue 1 team "depend a lot on the rhythm that Payet imposes," but warned that theyb were dangerous "at all levels" even without the former West Ham player.
