Arsenal secure Europa quarterfinals spot; Dortmund eliminated

Arsenal are through to the quarterfinals of the Europa League after beating AC Milan 3-1 on Thursday night and 5-1 on aggregate in their round-of-16 second leg at the Emirates Stadium.

Hakan Calhanoglu had Milan in front in the 35th minute with a dipping, swerving strike from distance that left David Ospina no chance in the Arsenal goal.

But minutes later, Arsenal were back on level terms when Ricardo Rodriguez was questionably deemed to have fouled Danny Welbeck in the penalty area, with the latter dispatching his spot kick to make it 1-1 at the break.

Milan came out of the dressing room needing two goals to draw level in the tie, but it was again Arsenal that looked more likely to score.

And Arsene Wenger's men found their second just past 70 minutes when Gianluigi Donnarumma parried Granit Xhaka's shot from distance back into his own net when he should have kept it out.

Welbeck added gloss to the result with his second goal of the night, nodding home from close range after Aaron Ramsey's header from a Jack Wilshere cross had been saved by Donnarumma.

Arsenal will now await their quarterfinal opponent, which will be revealed during the Europa League draw on Friday afternoon at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland.

Meanwhile, Borussia Dortmund crashed out of the competition 2-1 on aggregate after a 0-0 draw at RB Salzburg.

The Germans' chances of advancing took a hit after a 2-1 loss at the Westfalenstadion last week, and they couldn't find a way through in the second leg in Austria before bowing out of the tournament in what will be considered a disappointing campaign.

Fernando Torres scored twice as Europa League favourites Atletico Madrid hammered Lokomotiv Moscow 5-1 in Russia to advance.

Atleti already held a 3-0 advantage from the first leg and Angel Correa's rifled finish in the 16th minute gave them an early away goal too.

The hosts swiftly struck back through Maciej Rybus' brilliant effort from range but Diego Simeone's side would score four times after the break to progress 8-1 on aggregate.

Saul Niguez restored their lead on the night less than two minutes into the second half, with ex-Liverpool and Chelsea striker Torres adding two further goals, the first a penalty, before substitute Antoine Griezmann deliciously lifted a fifth into the far corner.

The only concerning incident for Simeone came in the second half when Filipe Luis had to be taken off on a stretcher having been injured making a fine last-ditch challenge.

Marseille progressed after a 2-1 second-leg victory at Athletic Bilbao that was marred by crowd trouble.

Bilbao police said two security guards received minor injuries after being attacked by Marseille fans, and that three supporters had been detained.

There was also trouble in the previous round against Spartak Moscow when a police officer died after clashes involving both sets of fans outside the stadium.

On the field, however, captain Dimitri Payet followed up his first-leg goal by scoring a penalty in the return match to stretch Marseille's aggregate lead to 4-1.

Lucas Ocampos made it 2-0 on the night after fooling two defenders and shooting low past goalkeeper Iago Herrerin before Inaki Williams pulled one back for Bilbao, which had Aritz Aduriz sent off in the 76th minute.

CSKA Moscow beat Lyon 3-2 in France to secure a 3-3 aggregate passage.

The Russians overturned a 1-0 first-leg loss with goals from Aleksandr Golovin, Ahmed Musa and Pontus Wernbloom.

Maxwel Cornet and Mariano scored for the hosts.

Lazio advanced with a 2-0 win at Dinamo Kiev.

Lucas Leiva gave Lazio a 23rd-minute lead in Kiev when he headed in a corner from Luis Alberto and Stefan de Vrij completed a 4-2 aggregate win with seven minutes to go.

RB Leipzig drew 1-1 at Zenit St. Petersburg to go through 3-2 on aggregate.

Leipzig took control at Zenit as Jean-Kevin Augustin's low shot gave them a 22nd-minute lead.

Sebastian Driussi levelled by volleying home a cross from Domenico Criscito in first-half stoppage time.

Timo Werner then missed a penalty for Leipzig but the German team still went through 3-2 on aggregate.

Sporting Lisbon needed an extra-time goal from Rodrigo Battaglia to overcome Viktoria Plzen.

Trailing 2-0 from the first leg, Marek Bakos' double drew the Czech club level.

Sporting's Bas Dost then had a stoppage-time penalty saved, ensuring the game went to extra time, where Battaglia's 105th-minute header proved the difference.
