Philipp Lahm hoping Augsburg can beat Liverpool in Europa League

Bayern Munich captain Philipp Lahm has backed local rivals Augsburg to come out on top in their Europa League clash with Liverpool.

Augsburg host Bundesliga leaders Bayern on Sunday at their WWK Arena before welcoming Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool on Thursday for the first leg of the round-of-32 tie.

Under Pep Guardiola, Bayern have suffered two 1-0 defeats against Augsburg, while they only narrowly beat them 2-1 through a controversial last-minute penalty at the Allianz Arena in September.

"Augsburg have always been an awkward opponent for us," Lahm told Augsburg's official website. "They are hard-working and are very disciplined in defence."

These attributes could help Augsburg prevail in their upcoming clash with Liverpool, the Bayern captain believes.

"The meeting with Liverpool is an absolute highlight for Augsburg, if not the biggest highlight in their entire club history," he said. "Especially the second leg at Anfield.

"If the team can play to its strength against Jurgen Klopp's XI, they indeed have a chance of making the next round. I, in any case, keep my fingers crossed for FC Augsburg."
