Genoa withdrew their UEFA licence appeal and are officially out of the Europa League. Their spot will go to Sampdoria, according to Italian media reports.

The Grifone finished sixth in the Serie A table, which would have earned them a Europa League spot along with Fiorentina and Napoli.

But after documents were improperly filed last month and the club failed to meet code for their Stadio Luigi Ferraris, their appeal was rejected.

On Wednesday, their lawyer, Mattia Grassani, said he had withdrawn the final appeal to the Italian Olympic Committee.

"Out of a sense of responsibility and respect towards the institutions, considering the insistence of the FIGC and very rigorous rules surrounding the UEFA licence, we withdrew our appeal," he said.

City rivals Sampdoria, the next team down in the table, will get the Europa League spot that had belonged to Genoa. Sampdoria registered Sassuolo's Mapei Stadium in Reggio Emilia as their home arena.
