Wolfsburg's Nicklas Bendtner may start at Inter Milan - Dieter Hecking

Nicklas Bendtner could return to Wolfsburg's starting XI when the Bundesliga side take on Inter Milan in Thursday's Europa League round-of-16 second leg, according to coach Dieter Hecking.

Bendtner, 27, joined Wolfsburg on a free transfer last summer after the Denmark international had been released from his contract at Arsenal.

The striker has repeatedly made headlines during his career, saying in February: "I meet people who think that I am the greatest person in the world, and I also meet others who want to throw bottles at me."

He has yet to make an impact on the pitch for Die Wolfe, and has started only four games for the club in all competitions.

Bendtner last started in the 2-0 home defeat to Everton in the Europa League in November, and all of his appearances since have been as a late substitute.

However, his most recent 11-minute cameo against Freiburg has upped his chances of winning a first start for Wolfsburg in 2015.

In the Bundesliga match on Sunday the Dane played a wonderful long pass to Kevin De Bruyne, who went on to set up Maximilian Arnold for the final goal in the 3-0 victory.

Wolfsburg's Dutch attacker Bas Dost has also struggled following his fine goal-scoring form earlier this year, with the 25-year-old failing to find the net in his last four competitive games after 14 strikes in his previous nine matches.

"Nicklas is very close [to a return to the starting XI]," Hecking told Bild. "He's well accepted in the group. I am very satisfied with him. And Bas has to face it. It's a lot of fun watching both competing with each other.

"It was clear that Bas' roll would not go [on] endlessly. But, to me, a striker is not only about goals."

Wolfsburg carry a 3-1 lead into the second leg at the San Siro on Thursday, with a place in the Europa League quarterfinals at stake.
