PSG, Basel hit by UEFA charges after Champions League matches

PARIS -- UEFA hit Paris Saint-Germain with four different charges following their 2-1 loss at home to Real Madrid in the Champions League round-of-16 second leg on Tuesday, which completed a 5-2 aggregate defeat.

In the build-up to the game, the French capital outfit's ultras did their best to motivate their players, unnerve Real's, and promised a noisy and colourful display at Parc des Princes -- and they stayed true to their word.

However, the use of flares caused the match to be paused a few times by German referee Felix Brych and several requests had to be made via the loudspeaker system, with the PSG players even having to plead with the supporters to calm down the use of the flares.

After being knocked out of the Champions League, PSG are also facing four different UEFA charges.

Setting off flares is a breach of Article 16 of UEFA's Disciplinary Regulations, and the club was also charged with three other violations: The use of laser pointers, insufficient organisation and blocked stairways.

UEFA's Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body will deal with the case on March 22.

Paris Ultras Collective president Romain Mabille has already spoken with Le Parisien and announced that he as chief and the CUP assume "total responsibility" for Tuesday's events.

Meanwhile, Basel were charged after their fans set off fireworks at the Etihad Stadium during the Swiss club's Champions League victory over Manchester City.

On Wednesday night, Basel claimed a surprise 2-1 win over Premier League leaders City, but Pep Guardiola's side progressed to the quarterfinals regardless, winning 5-2 on aggregate.

Disciplinary proceedings have been opened following the game as UEFA claims Basel have breached Article 16(2)(c) of its disciplinary regulations because fireworks were ignited by travelling supporters.
