Monaco in 'evenly balanced group' after Champions League draw - Glik

Monaco defender Kamil Glik set his sights on emulating last season's Champions League fairytale run to the semifinals following the 2017-18 group stage draw on Thursday.

Glik was part of the Monaco side that not only took the Ligue 1 title last term, but also reached the last four of European club football's premier competition, beating Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund en route before falling to eventual runners-up Juventus.

The French champions will set out on this season's challenge against Porto, Besiktas and RB Leipzig in Group G, and Glik is hopeful the principality club can give their fans more happy memories.

"It's an evenly balanced group, it seems to me. Every team will have a chance of going through. Porto is a big club that has already won the competition. We know the atmosphere is always electric at Besiktas and Leipzig surprised everyone in Germany last year," said the Poland international, whose side have won their opening three league matches of the season.

"Our aim will be to get out of the group, but each match will be tricky. We'll have to be at 100% to give ourselves the means to do that. Once again, we'll try to represent Monaco's colours as best we can. We had an extraordinary run last season. I hope we'll again be able to share some great emotions with our fans."

Monaco faced Porto in the 2003-04 final, losing out to the Portuguese giants, who were coached by Jose Mourinho at the time. It will also mark a reunion with one of his former clubs for Monaco forward Radamel Falcao, who played for Porto between 2009 and 2011 ahead of his move to Atletico Madrid.

Monaco will, however, be facing Besiktas and last season's surprise Bundesliga runners-up Leipzig for the first time, while Jardim's remodelled squad, which has lost Bernardo Silva, Benjamin Mendy and Tiemoue Bakayoko among others this summer, will also include a number of debutants in the competition.

"It's an even draw. It's only at the end that we'll know whether or not it's a good one. We'll do our very best to reach the Last 16," said Adama Diakhaby, a summer arrival from Rennes who will be making his Champions League bow.

"For me, it's the start of a magnificent adventure, because it's the first time I'll play in the Champions League. What's for certain is that we'll give everything. I'm looking forward to it starting."
