Nice oust Ajax in Champions League qualifiers; Celtic advance

Ajax failed to make it through to the Champions League qualifiers for the third consecutive year on Wednesday when they were eliminated on the away goals rule 3-3 on aggregate after a 2-2 home draw against Ligue 1 side Nice.

The Dutch side, who lost to Manchester United in the Europa League final last season, were a goal down after just three minutes, when Arnaud Souquet slotted home from close range.

Goals from Donny van de Beek and Davinson Sanchez on either side of half-time gave the home side hope, but Vincent Marcel sealed the Eredivisie side's fate with just 11 minute remaining after a sensational back-heeled assist from midfielder Jean Seri.

Meanwhile, James Forrest's second-half strike gave Celtic a 1-0 win over Rosenborg to take the Hoops another step closer towards UCL football.

Following the goalless draw at Parkhead last week, Celtic were again without their only two recognised strikers Moussa Dembele and Leigh Griffiths -- with winger Forrest asked to move into the middle.

The Scotland international was thwarted in a first half dominated by Brendan Rodgers' side and, in the 69th minute, Forrest fired a shot high past keeper Andre Hansen to take the visitors into Friday's playoff draw with a 1-0 aggregate win.

Young Boys, who'd lost their first leg 3-1, advanced in dramatic fashion over Dynamo Kiev thanks to a 2-0 victory in Kiev.

Guillaume Hoarau's 12th-minute penalty gave the visitors hope, and Jordan Mvula Lotomba completed the comeback a minute from time to seal the Swiss side's passage 3-3 on aggregate.

Former Arsenal and Tottenham striker Emmanuel Adebayor scored as his side Istanbul Basaksehir beat Club Brugge 2-0 at home to progress 5-3 on aggregate.

And Bibras Natcho scored the lone goal to help CSKA Moscow oust AEK Athens 3-0 on aggregate.
