Bayern Munich coach Carlo Ancelotti 'excited' about facing Real Madrid

Carlo Ancelotti is "excited" by Bayern Munich's quarterfinal tie against his "fantastic" former club Real Madrid in the Champions League, saying it will be tough but he has "faith" his side can progress.

Bayern and Real Madrid will meet once again in the competition after they were pitted against each other in Friday's draw in Switzerland.

Ancelotti will have to plot his way past a Real side that he led to Champions League glory in 2014, thrashing Pep Guardiola's Bayern 5-0 on aggregate in the last four on the way to their historic La Decima.

"Real are world champion, Champions League holders with a fantastic team, players and trainer," Ancelotti said at news conference.

"It's a special game for me and I'm excited by the prospect of facing Real Madrid."

Ancelotti will pit his wits against Zinedine Zidane, who he mentored during his spell in charge of Italian champions Juventus.

However, Ancelotti didn't believe Bayern held an important advantage against his former employer, who he coached from 2013-2015.

"In modern football, every team knows everything about each other," he said.

"This isn't a topic for me. I know everything you need to know about every team in Europe, not only Real Madrid. There's no advantage."

He added: "There are no secrets in football. But we want to win the Champions League and have faith in ourselves. Quarterfinals are always difficult, it's going to be a tough game but we have a chance to win.

"It's also exciting for me to return to Madrid, but it's only a game and we want to be the best team against Real.

Ancelotti, 57, who has won the Champions League with AC Milan and Real Madrid, spoke of the difficulty of winning the top prize in European club football.

"Minor details will decide," he said. "Perhaps a referee's decision, therefore it's always tough to win."

Overall, Bayern boast a positive record against Real in 16 European ties, winning eight and losing seven, and prevailed against Real in 2012 in a penalty shootout.
