Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez: Bayer Leverkusen have 'mission impossible'

Bayer Leverkusen forward Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez has said his side face "almost mission impossible" to turn around their Champions League tie at Atletico Madrid on Wednesday.

Atletico won the first leg in Leverkusen 4-2, and the Bundesliga side have since have since sacked coach Roger Schmidt and replaced him with Tayfun Korkut.

Mexico international Hernandez told reporters: "We know it is almost mission impossible. But we are coming here to play a perfect game."

Atletico have progressed in all 20 of their previous UEFA competition ties in which they won away in the first leg, while Leverkusen have lost all 10 in which they suffered a first leg home defeat.

But Atletico defender Diego Godin said Paris Saint-Germain's loss of a 4-0 first-leg lead against Barcelona last week showed nothing could be taken for granted.

"That is the best example that this is football and anything can happen," the Uruguay international told a news conference.

"That is the nice thing about all this. But we respect this opponent always. We are not thinking about the first leg result, just winning this match.

"We go out to win, not to defend our lead, as we always do."

Should Diego Simeone's side progress, they will reach a fourth consecutive Champions League quarterfinal as they bid to get to a third final in four seasons.

"It seems something normal, but we must realise it is not," Godin said. "We must be excited and give it the praise it deserves."

Atletico's squad includes forward Fernando Torres, ready to return to action just under two weeks after suffering a concussion against Deportivo La Coruna on March 2.

The former Liverpool and Chelsea player could be named in the XI against Leverkusen following a full recovery, with Kevin Gameiro unavailable due to an abdominal complaint.

Centre-back Stefan Savic is expected to play wearing a facial mask to protect bones broken in his nose during last Saturday's win at Granada.
